Description:
For a short course to give students of physics, chemistry, engineering and medicine, a working knowledge of calculus, this hook is worthy of favorable attention.
This presentation has been made chiefly from the standpoint of coordinate geometry, but it does not presume any knowledge of formal analytic geometry or the properties of functions.
The student will learn to use both algebraic and geometric methods in the study of functions and becomes acquainted with the forms of equations of simple curves as they are required in the solving of problems. Omitting the differentiation and integration of complicated forms and topics of little practical value, there is given a selection of real problems in rate of change, velocity, maxima and mimina, areas, volumes, pressure of liquids, center of gravity, mean value, work, and so on, with simple and concise explanations and discussions, which almost force the student to understand what he is doing.
Although as a text, it is one which would not be selected by those who desire more than an introduction to the subject, its mastery would connote the full equivalent of the ordinary scientific student’s knowledge of analysis.
