Description:
These two volumes cover the classical topics typically taught in undergraduate physics courses and beyond. However, we teach classical physics using a very different language from traditional books, influenced by the language of modern physics, in a move to encourage a positive approach towards the latter subject. Based around the unifying concept of energy, we take a distinct approach to the organisation of material, presenting physics in a cohesive manner without separating topics such as mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism. Instead, physics is revealed gradually, emphasising a holistic approach to science. Despite this peculiarity, we have maintained the conventional separation between Physics I and II to assist teachers in smoothly integrating these books into their courses.
These innovative volumes present valuable new perspectives. Although their approach is bold, they will certainly prompt interesting reflections on traditional teachings. A significant portion of this second volume is committed to modern physics, including an introduction to the standard model of fundamental interactions. The old quantum mechanics is largely excluded in favour of quantum field theory, which we present in a manner accessible to undergraduate students.

Readership: This book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in the field of general physics as an introduction to modern physics, as well as teachers and faculties willing to develop new teaching methods.
Giovanni Organtini is professor of experimental physics at Sapienza Università di Roma. His scientific interests are in the fields of fundamental interactions and physics education. In his work, he has covered a broad range of activities: from designing and building scientific apparatus to computing and programming; from data analysis to data management. He took on various responsibilities in the most important experiments conducted at CERN (L3 and CMS in particular, through which the Higgs boson was discovered in 2012).Giovanni Organtini enjoys innovating teaching methods: he developed the methodology adopted in this publication by continuously improving the way to teach physics to non-physicists. His lessons were greatly appreciated by both students and other faculties, and he has developed a reputation as a world-class expert in teaching physics with digital tools like Arduino and smartphones, for which he has written textbooks for high schools and universities. When not working, he likes discovering good restaurants, attending concerts and art exhibitions, and travelling to discover different cultures and places. His interest in fine arts prompted him to lead educational programs that bring together art and science.Graziano Surace is a PhD researcher at the Department of Mathematics of Sapienza Università di Roma and a high school teacher of mathematics and physics. He holds a master’s degree in physics and a specialisation in the teaching of physics and mathematics.Graziano Surace is interested in the history of physics and digital technologies for science education. He is a member of the Italian Association for Research in Didactics of Mathematics (AIRDM) and the author of Il quanto di sfida, a historical essay on the origins of the old quantum theory.
