At the time of its publishing, the book was cause of great controversy because of its explicit depiction of sexuality and violence. But the novel was very a success both with the public and with the critics.
In 1942, the novel was adapted into a stage play which ran for over 200 performances. In 1948, it was adapted into the British film "No Orchids for Miss Blandish", and, in 1971, it was remade as the American film "The Grissom Gang".
