Description:
This publication provides an overview of exonyms in Spanish. An exonym is the name used in a specific language for a geographical feature situated outside the area where that language is spoken and differing in its form from the name used in an official or well-established language of the area where the geographical feature is located. Londres, for example, is the Spanish exonym for London.
The aim of this publication is to present the debates, trends, and criteria for the use of exonyms in Spanish, particularly in cartography. It also shows how the doubts and issues that arise when dealing with foreign toponymy at the National Atlas of Spain (ANE),are resolved.
