Book Description
======
With the recent discovery of a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil containing soft
tissue, Douglas PrestonÆs new thriller TYRANNOSAUR CANYON seems pulled
from todayÆs headlines! Douglas Preston comments on this extraordinary
find, saying:

When I was writing Tyrannosaur Canyon, I briefly considered having them
find a T. Rex fossil containing some original tissue. But I dropped
the idea because I didn’t want to become the laughing stock of the scientific
world. One week after I turned in the final manuscript, they made this
astounding discovery: another example of truth being stranger than fiction.

So, what was PrestonÆs true inspiration then for writing a book like
Tyrannosaur Canyon? Douglas Preston says:

The truth is, IÆve been mulling it over ever since I worked at the American
Museum of Natural History in New York and explored the museumÆs dinosaur-bone
storage vaults. Here, most of the museumÆs dinosaur fossils are stacked
up like cordwood or heaped up in corners and on shelves. I became fascinated
with the people who hunted these dinosaurs, people like Barnum Brown
and Charles Sternberg. They were a unique breed, and ever since IÆve
been dying to write a novel about a modern-day dinosaur hunter.

From this experience, the author had his novel idea, yet he still needed
a thrilling twist for the story. Two years ago, the author came across
an amazing article in Scientific American about the asteroid strike
that caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. The asteroid slammed
into the proto-Gulf of Mexico moving at 40,000 miles an hour. It was
so large that when its leading edge hit the earthÆs surface, part of
it was still outside the atmosphere. The smoke and dust caused by the
asteroid blocked all light for three months. For five years it rained
nitric and sulfuric acid, which dissolved the very rocks and sterilized
almost every freshwater body on the planet. It took 130,000 years for
the earth to cool off. The real mystery now is how the mammalsùour ancestorsùsu-
rvived.

This extraordinary mystery is at the heart of TYRANNOSAUR CANYON, a
novel featuring Tom Broadbent (The Codex, Forge 2004), a missing moon
rock, a scientist with ambition enough to kill, a monk who will redeem
the world, a dark agency with a deadly mission, and the scientific discovery
of a lifetime. As #1 New York Times bestselling author Whitley Strieber
says ôI will not forget TYRANNOSAUR CANYON. Nobody who reads it will,
not for a long, long time.ö
