Description:
Tension runs high as a Moscow cop investigates murder under the big top-from the Edgar Award-winning "Ed McBain of Mother Russia" ( Kirkus Reviews ).

Porfiry Rostnikov was one of the top detectives in Moscow-until he crossed the KGB. On the orders of the secret service, this bulldog cop is busted down to the minor crimes unit, where his talents are utterly wasted. When a drunk climbs the statue of Nikolai Gogol in Arbat Square and threatens to kill himself, Rostnikov tries to talk the man down. But with a perfect somersault, acrobat Valerian Duznetzov leaps from the statue-the final jump of a storied career.

Across town, Duznetzov’s partner, Oleg, practices his trapeze routine high above the circus floor. After letting go of the bars and going into a perfect double flip, Oleg falls, expecting the net to catch him. But the net has been sabotaged, and Oleg dies. As Rostnikov digs into this strange pair of deaths, he finds dark secrets inside the Moscow circus-secrets sure to grab the attention of his old friends at the KGB.

"The shrewd, temperate Inspector Rostnikov . . . himself is like an acrobat on the high wire without a net, a target of both his jealous supervisor and the unknown murderer . . . This witty, intricate thriller reaches a suspenseful finale in the center ring under the Moscow Circus Big Top." – Publishers Weekly Click to expand…

Description:
PI Toby Peters comes to the aid of Charlie Chaplin when the Little Tramp becomes a big target in this "ingenious" mystery from the Edgar Award winner ( Kirkus Reviews ).

In 1943, Charlie Chaplin is far from the most popular man in America. His communist sympathies and romantic indiscretions with young women have enraged everyone from right-wing radicals and the Ku Klux Klan to furious fathers.

But when a knife-wielding intruder breaks into his house one night, the maniac isn’t talking politics. He demands Chaplin stop making his latest black comedy about a man who murders wealthy women for their money-and specifically tells him to stay away from one Fiona Sullivan. Who?

Chaplin turns to the shamus to the stars, Toby Peters, to keep him from harm and apprehend his nocturnal visitor. Peters’s lead on Fiona comes from a most unlikely source-his landlady, Mrs. Irene Plaut, knows the woman. Rallying his crew of diminutive Gunther Wherthman, wrestler Jeremy Butler, and dentist Sheldon Minck, Toby’s determined to catch the midnight madman before Chaplin is silenced forever.

In the twenty-first book in his long-running series, the Edgar Award-winning author offers an "ingenious twist on the old serial killer chestnut, with the usual manic Peters mΓ©nage obbligato" ( Kirkus Reviews ). Click to expand…

Description:
This "enjoyable lark" is a road-trip mystery with an old Hollywood backdrop, starring PI Toby Peters and the great comic W. C. Fields ( Library Journal ).

Under names like Otis J. Raisincluster, Quigley E. Sneersight, and Cormorant Beecham III, W. C. Fields squirreled away nearly a million dollars in banks across the country during his vaudeville days-before he became one of the silver screen’s most recognizable funnymen. But it’s no laughing matter when a burglar has the audacity to rob him blind, stealing his bankbooks and cleaning out his accounts. Steaming, the comedian hires Hollywood private investigator Toby Peters to track down the missing dough and protect what remains of his nest egg.

On a cross-country road trip through small-town 1940s America, a frequently inebriated Fields and a frequently exasperated Peters encounter complications in the form of the Amish, John Barrymore, and the Ku Klux Klan. But can they catch their elusive quarry-Lester O. Hipnoodle?

"Even on the printed page . . . Fields’ nasal rap seems to rise up and envelop you" in the Edgar Award-winning author’s "mesmerizing" comic mystery ( Chicago Sun-Times ). Click to expand…

Description:
A Moscow cop is left out in the cold in this "impressive" Edgar Award winner for Best Mystery Novel ( The Washington Post Book World ).

When forced to choose between the law and the party line, Police Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov has a disturbing tendency to fight for justice, and that has won him no friends at the Kremlin. Now his enemies in the KGB have arranged a transfer to the lowest rungs of Moscow law enforcement, a backwater department assigned to only the most hopeless cases, one of which is about to take Rostnikov deep into Siberia.

A corrupt commissar has been stabbed through the eye with an icicle. A murder at this level should be a top priority, but Rostnikov gets the distinct impression that the powers-that-be would prefer this case go unsolved-and that Rostnikov not survive this Siberian winter.

"As always, Kaminsky provides a colorful, tightly written mystery . . . filled with twists, countertwists, and a surprise ending that is plausible and clever." – Chicago Tribune Click to expand…

Stuart Gillespie Food Fight – (Stuart Gillespie)

Catergory: Business, Sociology, Nonfiction, Economics

Using decades of research and insight gathered from around the world, health and nutrition expert Stuart Gillespie reimagines our global food system, plotting a way forward for a sustainable, equitable, and healthy food future
Food is life, but our food system is killing us. Designed in a different century for a different purpose-to mass-produce cheap calories to prevent famine-it’s now generating obesity and ill-health and driving the climate crisis. We need to transform it into one that can nourish all eight billion of us and the planet we live on.
In Food Fight, Stuart Gillespie shares the insights he’s gleaned over a forty-year career in food, nutrition, and health, revealing how the global food system we once relied upon for nutrition has warped into the very thing making us sick. Many of us are now simultaneously overweight and undernourished. From its origins in colonial plunder through to the past few decades of neo-liberalism, our food system now lies in the tight grip of a handful of powerful transnational corporations that are playing for profit at any cost-aided by governments who let them get away with it.
With his eye trained on solutions within our grasp, Gillespie also celebrates success stories from around the world, driven by remarkable citizens, social movements, policy makers, and politicians. These case studies offer hope that, by organizing, sharing, and learning, we can build a better food future for ourselves and for our children.
Both unflinching exposΓ© and revolutionary call to arms, Food Fight shines a light inside the black box of politics and power before mapping a way toward a new system that gives us hope for a future of global health and justice. Click to expand…

WORLDWAR: BOOK 4
At the bloody height of World War II, the deadliest enemies in all of
human history were forced to put aside their hatreds and unite against
an even fiercer foe: a seemingly invincible power bent on world domination.-
With awesome technology, the aggressors swept across the planet, sowing
destruction as Tokyo, Berlin, and Washington, D.C., were A-bombed into
submission. Russia, Nazi Germany, Japan and the U.S. were not easily
cowed, however. With cunning and incredible daring, they pressed every
advantage against the invader’s superior strength, and, led by Stalin,
began to detonate their own atom bombs in retaliation.
City after city explodes in radioactive firestorms, and fears grow as
the worldwide resources disappear; will there be any world left for
the invaders to conquer, or for the uneasy allies to defend?
While Mao Tse-tung wages a desperate guerrilla war and Hitler drives
his country toward self-destruction, United States forces frantically
try to stop the enemy’s push from coast to coast. Yet in this battle
to stave off world domination, unless the once-great military powers
take the risk of annihilating the human race, they’ll risk losing the
war.
The fatal, final deadline arrives in Harry Turtledove’s grand, smashing
finale to the Worldwar series, as uneasy allies desperately seek a way
out of a no-win, no-survival situation: a way to live free in a world
that may soon be bombed into atomic oblivion.

Andrew Vachss’s implacable private eye has a new client, Strega. She
wants Burke to find an obscene photograph and that search will take
him into the ocean that vows just beneath the city, an ocean whose currents
are fesh and money, the anguish of children and the pleasure of twisted
adults. It is a place that Burke can visit only at the risk of his sanity
and his life. But between the power of Strega and his own sense of justice,
there is no turning back.

In Strega one of our most acclaimed crime writers gives us a thriller
that might have been imagined by Dante. For this is a tour of hell with
no stops left out, conducted by a novelist who writes with the authority
of the damned.

"It’s wonderful. The words leap off the page. The plot is fresh. The
principal character is original. The style is as clean as a haiku."

Strangers In The Land – (Rausing, Sigrid)

Michael Luo | 2025 | ISBN: 0385548575 | English | 560 pages | ePUB | 37 MB

Catergory: History, Multi-Cultural, Sociology, Nonfiction

FromNew Yorkerwriter Michael Luo comes a masterful narrative history of the Chinese in America that traces the sorrowful theme of exclusion and documents their more than century-long struggle to belong.
ATIME MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK | ANEW YORK TIMESNONFICTION BOOK TO READ THIS SPRING
"A story about aspiration and belonging that is as universal as it is profound."-Patrick Radden Keefe, author ofSay Nothing
"A gift to anyone interested in American history. I couldn’t stop turning pages."-Charles Yu, author ofInterior Chinatown
"What history should be-richly detailed, authoritative, and compelling."-David Grann, author ofThe Wager andKillers of the Flower Moon
Strangers in the Land tells the story of a people who, beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century, migrated by the tens of thousands to a distant land they called Gum Shan-Gold Mountain. Americans initially welcomed these Chinese arrivals, but, as their numbers grew, horrific episodes of racial terror erupted on the Pacific coast. A prolonged economic downturn that idled legions of white workingmen helped create the conditions for what came next: a series of progressively more onerous federal laws aimed at excluding Chinese laborers from the country, marking the first time the United States barred a people based on their race. In a captivating debut, Michael Luo follows the Chinese from these early years to modern times, as they persisted in the face of bigotry and persecution, revealing anew the complications of our multiracial democracy.
Luo writes of early victims of anti-Asian violence, like Gene Tong, a Los Angeles herbalist who was dragged from his apartment and hanged by a mob during one of the worst mass lynchings in the country’s history; of demagogues like Denis Kearney, a sandlot orator who became the face of the anti-Chinese movement in the late-1870s; of the pioneering activist Wong Chin Foo and other leaders of the Chinese community, who pressed their new homeland to live up to its stated ideals. At the book’s heart is a shameful chapter of American history: the brutal driving out of Chinese residents from towns across the American West. The Chinese became the country’s first undocumented immigrants: hounded, counted, suspected, surveilled.
In 1889, while upholding Chinese exclusion, Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field characterized them as "strangers in the land." Only in 1965 did America’s gates swing open to people like Luo’s parents, immigrants from Taiwan. Today there are more than twenty-two million people of Asian descent in the United States and yet the "stranger" label, Luo writes, remains. Drawing on archives from across the country and written with a New Yorker writer’s style and sweep, Strangers in the Land is revelatory and unforgettable, an essential American story. AFinancial Times‘What to read in 2025’ Book

From ancient times to our digital present,Strangers and Intimatestraces the dramatic emergence of private life, and argues that it is now in mortal danger.

In this sweeping history, acclaimed cultural historian Tiffany Jenkins takes listeners ion an epic journey, from the strict separations of public and private in ancient Athens to the moral rigidity of the Victorian home, and from the feminists of the 1970s who declared that ‘the personal is political’ to the boundary-blurring demands of our digital age.
Strangers and Intimates is both a celebration of the private realm and a warning: as social media, surveillance and the expectations of constant openness reshape our lives, Jenkins asks a timely question: can private life survive the demands of the twenty-first century? Click to expand…
