The Great Villains Of History (Dr. Richard B. Spence)

The Great Courses 2026

Catergory: Biographies & Memoirs

The arc of history is filled with villains: tyrants, traitors, scoundrels, and cold-blooded killers. From Nero and Napoleon to Mata Hari and Charles Manson, the "bad guys" command our attention, bring excitement to the history books, and fill the airwaves with tales of true crime. But what makes a villain anyway? And why do their stories so capture our imaginations?
The Great Villains of History takes you into the riveting world of charisma and crime, evil and opportunity, ambition and bloodshed. Taught by esteemed Dr. Richard B. Spence, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Idaho, these 24 lectures tell the stories of more than 70 villains from Ancient Rome to Jeffrey Epstein, exploring not just what they did, but why they did it-and what their choices reveal about the darkest corners of the human heart.
Drawing from vivid historical accounts, Professor Spence spans eras and archetypes, from femme fatales and freebooters to dictators, war criminals, secret policemen, and criminal masterminds. He introduces you to such infamous figures as Lucrezia Borgia, accused of murder by poison amid family intrigue; Heinrich Himmler, the architect of Nazi terror; and Pablo Escobar, the cocaine kingpin and killer of the first order.
As he surveys these tales of terror and intrigue, Professor Spence also takes you on a journey through the human heart. The villains in this course are not cartoon monsters but rather complex, intelligent individuals often convinced of their own righteousness-even as their narcissism unleashed disaster on their victims. You’ll find little sympathy for Jim Jones or Charles Manson, but what do we make of Catherine the Great, John D. Rockefeller, or Henry Kissinger?
Whether it’s the calculated oppression of a Stasi leader or the bloody rise of a totalitarian dictator, The Great Villains of History dissects evil without glorifying it, bringing you on a journey across history and into the deepest recesses of the human mind.

The Great Transformation China’s Road From Revolution To Reform (Chen Jian)

0300285604 Yale University Press 2025

Catergory: Business & Finance, Economics, Economic History, Nonfiction, History, Asian, China, Modern, 20th Century

THE FIRST THOROUGH ACCOUNT OF A FORMATIVE AND LITTLE UNDERSTOOD CHAPTER IN CHINESE HISTORY
Odd Arne Westad and Chen Jian chronicle how an impoverished and terrorized China experienced radical political changes in the long 1970s and how ordinary people broke free from the beliefs that had shaped their lives during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. These changes, and the unprecedented and sustained economic growth that followed, transformed China and the world.
In this rigorous account, Westad and Chen construct a panorama of catastrophe and progress in China. They chronicle China’s gradual opening to the world-the interplay of power in an era of aged and ailing leadership, the people’s rebellion against the earlier government system, and the roles of unlikely characters: overseas Chinese capitalists, American engineers, Japanese professors, and German designers. This is a story of revolutionary change that neither foreigners nor the Chinese themselves could have predicted.
"Westad and Chen have written a masterful account of China’s modernization that illuminates the path it took to emerge as America’s only true peer competitor."-Graham Allison, author of Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap? Click to expand…

Book Description
======
Once again, the plumbing at Tawcester Towers is causing consternation
for the Dowager Duchess, so – unusually for her – she gives her blessing
for Blotto to take part in the ‘Great Road Race’ in his beloved Lagonda…so
long as he wins. The first prize of 10,000 pre-War sovereigns will help
towards repairing the leaky ancestral home.

Blotto elects to take chauffeur Corky Froggett as his spare mechanic,
while Twinks is despatched by her mother to the Highlands, to paint
water colours and bag herself a wealthy husband. But, on the morning
of the race’s start, enfeebled by food poisoning, Blotto and Corky are
forced to employ an extra mechanic on their team – a slender, blonde
and rather attractive young American… named Ronald.

So Blotto and his team are pitted against Europe’s finest, in a race
which takes them through France, across the Alps, to a finish line at
the Colosseum in Rome. Among the competitors are Florian CarrΘ-Dagneau,
indulged son of the race sponsors, Count Daspoontz from Germany, and
the Italian Enrico Parmigiano-Reggiano. All want to win the race, and
all want the prize money and all – with the exception of Blotto and
his team – will resort to dastardly deception and fiendish sabotage
to ensure Blotto’s Lagonda is not the first car over the finishing line…–

The ninth hair-raising adventure featuring the aristocratic brother
and sister sleuthing duo!

The Great Museum Of The Sea A Human History Of Shipwrecks 2025 (Delgado, James P.)

019778075X Oxford University Press 2025

Catergory: History, Nonfiction

An immersive dive into the meaning and mystique of shipwrecks
The sea is the largest museum on earth, with more than a million lost ships resting in its depths. Those shipwrecks date back thousands of years, some from civilizations long vanished, others from more recent history. Some are famous, others obscure and unremembered but each has a story to tell.
In The Great Museum of the Sea, archaeologist, museum director, television host, journalist, and award-winning author James Delgado takes the listener on a personal tour of the world’s wrecks, including many of the more than a hundred lost ships he has personally discovered and investigated, including Titanic, USS Arizona, and the slave ship Clotilda. The Great Museum of the Sea vividly explains how and why ships experience catastrophe at sea, and why their remains have captured our imagination for millennia.
Shipwrecks engage us in many ways-we treat them as tombs, but also recover them for museums and memorials, and salvage them for treasure. Authoritative and informed by decades of shipwreck expeditions, Delgado’s account offers an insider’s perspective, taking the listener into the deep and behind the scenes. Click to expand…

The Great Mother An Analysis Of The Archetype (Neumann, Erich)

0691166072 Princeton University Press (edition Revised) 2015

Catergory: Nonfiction, Social & Cultural Studies, Social Science, Folklore & Mythology, Health & Well Being, Psychology

A landmark account of the Great Mother as a primordial image of the human psyche
In this book, renowned analytical psychologist Erich Neumann draws on ritual, mythology, art, and records of dreams and fantasies to examine how the archetype of the Great Mother has been outwardly expressed in many cultures and periods since prehistory. He shows how the feminine has been represented as goddess, monster, gate, pillar, tree, moon, sun, vessel, and every animal from snakes to birds. Neumann discerns a universal experience of the maternal as both nurturing and fearsome, an experience rooted in the dialectical relation of growing consciousness, symbolized by the child, to the unconscious and the unknown, symbolized by the Great Mother. With a foreword by Martin Liebscher, The Great Mother is a profound and enduring work by one of the most brilliant thinkers of the twentieth century. Click to expand…
