Description: How the politicization of the pandemic endangers our lives-and our democracy
COVID-19 has killed more people than any war or public health crisis in American history, but the scale and grim human toll of the pandemic were not inevitable. Pandemic Politics examines how Donald Trump politicized COVID-19, shedding new light on how his administration tied the pandemic to the president’s political fate in an election year and chose partisanship over public health, with disastrous consequences for all of us.
Health is not an inherently polarizing issue, but the Trump administration’s partisan response to COVID-19 led ordinary citizens to prioritize what was good for their "team" rather than what was good for their country. Democrats, in turn, viewed the crisis as evidence of Trump’s indifference to public well-being. At a time when solidarity and bipartisan unity were sorely needed, Americans came to see the pandemic in partisan terms, adopting behaviors and attitudes that continue to divide us today. This book draws on a wealth of new data on public opinion to show how pandemic politics has touched all aspects of our lives-from the economy to race and immigration-and puts America’s COVID-19 response in global perspective.
An in-depth account of a uniquely American tragedy, Pandemic Politics reveals how the politicization of the COVID-19 pandemic has profound and troubling implications for public health and the future of democracy itself. Click to expand…

Pandemic Of Lunacy How To Think Clearly When Everyone Around You Seems Crazy [Audiobook] (J. Budz…

9781967613106 Creed & Culture 2026

Catergory: Nonfiction, Religion & Spirituality, Philosophy, Good & Evil, Ethics & Moral Philosophy, Social & Cultural Studies, Political Science

A bestselling moral philosopher dissects and explodes the crazy-but deadly serious-ideas that have spread, bred, and metastasized throughout contemporary society.
What is happening to the world? Why does it seem like everyone has gone crazy? Why are so many things that seemingly everyone believed the day before yesterday suddenly held to be retrograde, hateful, or even criminal? And why are things that everyone seemed to view as lunacy the day before yesterday suddenly taught or even required?
In Pandemic of Lunacy: How to Think Clearly When Everyone Around You Seems Crazy, University of Texas philosopher J. Budziszewski patiently explains the delusions that beset us. Ranging over the topics of morality and happiness, politics and government, family and sexuality, and God and religion, Budziszewski makes the case for sanity in commonsense language accessible to all.
Pandemic of Lunacy will be treasured by anyone who is troubled or confused, anyone who wonders whether the world has gone crazy or whether they have, and anyone who feels the need for a trustworthy guide in a topsy-turvy age. Click to expand…

Description: Pandemic!: COVID-19 Shakes the World: We live in a moment when the greatest act of love is to stay distant from the object of your affection. When governments renowned for ruthless cuts in public spending can suddenly conjure up trillions. When toilet paper becomes a commodity as precious as diamonds. And when, according to Slavoj Žižek, a new form of communism-the outlines of which can already be seen in the very heartlands of neoliberalism-may be the only way of averting a descent into global barbarism. Written with his customary brio and love of analogies in popular culture (Quentin Tarantino and H. G. Wells sit next to Hegel and Marx), Žižek provides a concise and provocative snapshot of the COVID-19 crisis as it widens, engulfing us all.
Pandemic! 2: Chronicles of a Time Lost: Žižek delves into some of the more surprising dimensions of lockdowns, quarantines, and social distancing-and the increasingly unruly opposition to them by "response fatigued" publics around the planet. Here, Žižek examines the ripple effects on the food supply of harvest failures caused by labor shortages and the hyper-exploitation of the global class of care workers, without whose labor daily life would be impossible. Through such examples he pinpoints the inability of contemporary capitalism to effectively safeguard the public in times of crisis. Click to expand…

Pamela Hill Environmental Justice A Very Short Introduction [Audiobook] (Pamela Hill)

9780197630150 Oxford University Press 2025

Catergory: Nonfiction, Reference & Language, Law, Environmental, Social & Cultural Studies, Social Science

Environmental justice recognizes that environmental benefits and burdens should be distributed fairly, and that the people making policy decisions should incorporate the views of those most often harmed: people of color, Indigenous populations, low-income communities, and those who are underserved and disenfranchised for other reasons such as age, gender, or disability. It encompasses not only traditional environmental issues like clean air and clean water, but also social issues such as employment, nutrition, and access to health care. Although environmental justice is a relatively recent concept, it has become a focus of governmental environmental policy, UN actions, and the activities of many nongovernmental environmental organizations. Its development tracks our growing understanding of racism and wealth disparity in the US and elsewhere, and of our understanding of inequality between the Global North and the Global South. In the era of climate change, climate justice is a particular focus. In an engaging and approachable way, Environmental Justice: A Very Short Introduction defines the concept, identifies specific environmental justice populations, examines root causes, including racism, capitalism, and colonialism, and traces the history of the environmental justice movement and governmental responses to it. It concludes with suggestions for achieving this elusive goal. Click to expand…

Book Description
======
From Publishers Weekly
In this sequel to The Curse of Chalion (2001), rich in sumptuous detail
and speculative theology, dowager royina Ista Dy Baocia undertakes a
pilgrimage to ease her soul-and finds instead that in Chalion, Bujold’s
handsomely crafted fantasy world ruled by Five Gods "just around some
strange corner of perception," a more dangerous fate awaits than she
could ever have imagined. Swordplay and sorcery sweep sensitive, sensible
40-year-old Ista into Chalion’s border stronghold of Porifors, where
enemy Roknari incursions and demons from the Fifth God’s hell threaten
Ista’s realm, held precariously at bay by the charismatic Arhys dy Lutez.
Ista’s romantic quest to save Arhys and his magnetic half-brother, Illvin,
teems with equal parts of unearthly magic and down-to-earth quasi-medieval
lore. Despite an occasional lapse into adolescent angst and spurts of
superficial dialogue, high fantasy fans should thrill at Ista’s spiritual
perils, while horse admirers of all ages should savor even Ista’s saddle
sores. This engaging installment of Chalion’s mythical history whets
the appetite for new marvels yet to come. FYI: Bujold has won both Hugo
and Nebula awards.

From Booklist
The eagerly awaited sequel to The Curse of Chalion (2001) continues
the story of the world of Chalion, though not strictly of Chalion, after
Iselle and Bergon have defeated one lot of enemies and celebrated their
wedding. Paladin of Souls focuses, however, on Iselle’s mother, Ista.
Three years free of the madness that kept her imprisoned in her family’s
castle, Ista is finally released from her last remaining duties by the
death of her mother. She undertakes a pilgrimage, but doesn’t get far
before she is overtaken by trouble, sorrow, need, and a host of other
adversities. Chalion is in trouble again, thanks to the plots, counterplots,
machinations, and follies of men and of gods, and Ista is perforce on
the front lines. Bujold couldn’t characterize badly if threatened with
a firing squad, and what really keeps one turning the pages is the fascinating
cast of characters–not that the plot is anything to sneeze at. Only
dedicated addicts of Bujold’s Vorkosigan saga will be miffed that she
has given us this book rather than that sf series’ next installment,
for Bujold is also head and shoulders above the ruck of current fantasists
as well as science-fictionists. Roland Green

1647124670 Georgetown University Press, US 2024

Catergory: History, Politics, Military, Nonfiction

An introduction to Pakistan’s ISI, which has been both an essential ally and problematic partner of the United States
Forged during the tumultuous aftermath of Partition in 1947, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) has grown to become the preeminent intelligence service in Pakistan. Its capabilities are comprehensive, its remit covers both foreign and domestic intelligence, and it is one of the most feared and respected agencies of the Global South.
Pakistan’s ISI provides an up-to-date and detailed introduction to the ISI and its historical evolution. The narrative is rooted in a deep and wide-ranging contextualization of the state of Pakistan and its security environment. The story is one of an agency that grew from humble beginnings into an extremely capable and robust force at the heart of power in the state. The ISI utilizes broad human intelligence networks and employs covert action and support for militants, particularly in its rivalry with India. As a crucial intelligence partner for the West during the Cold War and into the contemporary era, the ISI has been both an essential ally and problematic partner. The shadow of this agency continues to loom over Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
