The Blue Zones Lessons For Living Longer From The People Who’ve Lived The Longest (Dan Buettner)

1426207557 National Geographic 2012

Catergory: Health & Fitness, Nonfiction

Bestselling author, longevity expert, and National Geographic Explorer Dan Buettner reports on health, fitness, diet, and aging, drawing on his research from extraordinarily long-lived communities–Blue Zones–around the globe. Buettner has launched a major public health initiative to transform cities based on principles from this book, an updated and expanded edition of his bestselling classic on longevity. His prescriptions for lifestyle, nutrition, outlook, and stress-coping practices will add years to your life and life to your years.

The latest Blue Zone is Ikaria, Greece, where strong, sweet wine, family, and a Mediterranean diet all play a role in longer life. Also new in this book is a reading group guide, designed for groups to read about, discuss, and implement many of the simple changes advocated for better health.

A long, healthy life is no accident. It begins with good genes, but it also depends on good habits. If you adopt the right lifestyle, experts say, chances are you may live up to a decade longer. Buettner has led teams of researchers across the globe–from Costa Rica to Sardinia, Italy, to Okinawa, Japan and beyond–to uncover the secrets of Blue Zones. He found that the recipe for longevity is deeply intertwined with community, lifestyle, and spirituality. People live longer and healthier by embracing a few simple but powerful habits, and by creating the right community around themselves. In The Blue Zones, Second Edition, Buettner has blended his lifestyle formula with the latest longevity research to inspire lasting, behavioral change and add years to your life.

Region by region, Buettner reveals the "secrets" of longevity through stories of his travels and interviews with some of the most remarkable–and happily long-living people on the planet. It’s not coincidence that the way they eat, interact with each other, shed stress, heal themselves, avoid disease, and view their world yield them more good years of life. Description: In a series of powerful accounts drawn from diaries, letters, sound archives and interviews recorded during the period of devastation, discovery and transformation that make the blitz such an outstanding event in Britain’s recent past, "The Blitz" brings to life the intense experiences, as they happened all over Britain. The blitz proved to be a highly effective laboratory constructed out of necessity, and intense forcing house for change. Yet, compared to other great events of the Second World War – Dunkirk, D – Day, and even VE Day, the Blitz remains curiously unexamined. A type of cleansing resulted from it. It soon became evident that many of the attitudes in society were outdated. The most obvious inequalities between British society also became clear, and yet with everyone sharing the same devastation, these differences slowly began to lose their importance. As well as a social laboratory, the Blitz was a medical one too. Overworked doctors and scientists were forced to experiment and improvise. It was during the Blitz that the embryonic blood transfusion service grew to become a nation-wide institution. Psychoanalysis took on a new meaning too: the enemy was now external, someone different from "us".It gave coherence to artists and writers at the time such as Cecil Beaton. The Blitz is arranged as a series of chronological chapters, each focusing on an aspect of key importance. The perspective will primarily be that of those who had actual experience of those tumultuous months, when no one knew when or if the bombings would stop. Above all, it will be recounted in the words of the many "ordinary people" across Britain who were caught up in the Blitz, their stories, entries that are taken from the journals that they kept during this difficult time and also interviews with those who are still alive today. THE BLACK WOLF By Louise Penny [Audiobook]Fiction (Louise Penny)

Hodder & Stoughton 2025

Catergory: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

Somewhere out there, in the darkness, a black wolf is feeding.

Several weeks ago, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the SΓ»retΓ© du QuΓ©bec and his team uncovered and stopped a domestic terrorist attack in MontrΓ©al, arresting the person behind it. A man they called the Black Wolf.

But their relief is short-lived. In a sickening turn of events, Gamache has realized that plot, as horrific as it was, was just the beginning. Perhaps even a deliberate misdirection. One he fell into. Something deeper and darker, more damaging, is planned. Did he in fact arrest the Black Wolf, or are they still out there? Armand is appalled to think his mistake has allowed their conspiracy to grow, to gather supporters. To spread lies, manufacture enemies, and feed hatred and division.

Still recovering from wounds received in stopping the first attack, Armand is confined to the village of Three Pines, leading a covert investigation from there. He must be careful not to let the Black Wolf know he has recognized his mistake. In a quiet church basement, he and his senior agents Beauvoir and Lacoste, pore over what little evidence they have. Two notebooks. A few mysterious numbers on a tattered map of QuΓ©bec. And a phrase repeated by the person they had called the Grey Wolf. A warning…

In a dry and parched land where there is no water.

Gamache and his small team of supporters realize that for the Black Wolf to have gotten this far, they must have powerful allies, in law enforcement, in industry, in organized crime, in the halls of government. Click to expand…

Book Description
======
From Publishers Weekly
Connelly, a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times , transcends the
standard L.A. police procedural with this original and eminently authentic
first novel. Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch–former hero cop bumped from the
L.A. homicide desk to the lowly Beverly Hills squad–gets the call on
a drug death at Mulholland Dam. Harry recognizes the corpse as that
of a fellow soldier in Vietnam; both were "tunnel rats" who searched
for Viet Cong in the network of burrows beneath Vietnamese villages.
Investigation connects his old pal to an unsolved bank job–the vault
was tunneled into from the storm drains below–and Harry takes his information
to the FBI. The Bureau alerts the LAPD, which reactivates internal affairs
surveillance (the previous IAD episode is explained throughout the narrative),
only to have the FBI backtrack and request Harry as liaison on the case.
Paired with beautiful FBI agent Eleanor Wish, Harry makes sense of the
Vietnam connection to the bank job–a discovery that puts them both
in danger from deadly ex-Marines and a powerful insider from either
the LAPD or the FBI itself. Police higher-ups are somewhat cliched,
but Connelly avoids L.A. stereotypes and delivers this front-page story
with military precision. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.–

From School Library Journal
YA– Harry Bosch likes order, contends that there are no coincidences,
and keeps meticulous records in his “murder book.” When the body of
a former “tunnel rat” from Vietnam is found in a drainpipe, Harry
is the detective on duty and is called to the scene. His identification
of the body begins an investigation that leads to more murder, bank
robbery, heroin, diamonds, and betrayal. Connelly’s descriptions of
autopsies, murder scenes, and police procedure are vivid and realistic.
The use of acronyms and police jargon puts readers in the middle of
the action. A real page turner with gutty realism and an unusual twist.–
– Debbie Hyman, R. E. Lee High School, Springfield, VA Copyright 1992
Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Los Angeles police detective Hieronymus (a.k.a. Harry) Bosch discovers
something odd in what appears to be a routine drug overdose case. The
victim has a face from Harry’s past, a fellow "tunnel rat" from Vietnam
named Billy Meadows. Convinced that Meadows’s death is really murder,
Harry searches for the killers and soon clashes with the FBI, investigating
Meadows for another reason. Trying to walk through a minefield of deception
and corruption in high places, Harry works with FBI agent Eleanor Wish
to solve the case before they both get killed. Whose tracks have to
be covered at the cost of their lives? Fans of Joseph Wambaugh and William
Caunitz will enjoy this realistically detailed police procedural. Connelly,
a Pulitzer Prize-winning crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times ,
knows his turf well and demonstrates it in this complex and satisfying
thriller. This one could very well hit the best-seller lists; highly
recommended for any popular fiction collection. Dean James, Houston
Acad. of Medicine/Texas Medical Ctr. Lib.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From AudioFile
Harry Bosch, LAPD homicide detective, finds the body of a Vietnam War
buddy. Investigating his drug overdose leads Harry to an unsolved bank
theft. This Edgar Award-winning novel is well-read by Lloyd Battista,
whose gravelly voice is perfect for Bosch. Other voices are equally
well done and easily distinguishable from each other, no mean feat in
this novel, which has scores of different characters. An intricately
plotted and exciting novel, The Black Echo is worth listening to. S.F.W.
(c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

From Kirkus Reviews
Big, brooding debut police thriller by Los Angeles Times crime-reporter
Connelly, whose labyrinthine tale of a cop tracking vicious bank-robbers
sparks and smolders but never quite catches fire. Connelly shows off
his deep knowledge of cop procedure right away, expertly detailing the
painstaking examination by LAPD homicide detective Hieronymus (Harry)
Bosch of the death-scene of sometime junkie Billy Meadows, whom Bosch
knew as a fellow “tunnel rat” in Vietnam and who’s now o.d.’d in an
abandoned water tunnel. Pushing Meadows’s death as murder while his
colleagues see it as accidental, Bosch, already a black sheep for his
vigilante-like ways, further alienates police brass and is soon shadowed
by two nastily clownish Internal Affairs cops wherever he goes–even
to FBI headquarters, which Bosch storms after he learns that the Bureau
had investigated him for a tunnel-engineered bank robbery that Meadows
is implicated in. Assigned to work with beautiful, blond FBI agent Eleanor
Wish, who soon shares his bed in an edgy alliance, Bosch comes to suspect
that the robbers killed Meadows because the vet pawned some of the loot,
and that their subsequent killing of the only witness to the Meadows
slaying points to a turned cop. But who? Before Bosch can find out,
a trace on the bank-robbery victims points him toward a fortune in smuggled
diamonds and the likelihood of a second heist–leading to the blundering
death of the IAD cops, the unveiling of one bad cop, an anticipated
but too-brief climax in the L.A. sewer tunnels, and, in a twisty anticlimax,
the revelation of a second rotten law officer. Swift and sure, with
sharp characterizations, but at heart really a tightly wrapped package
of cop-thriller cliches, from the hero’s Dirty Harry persona to the
venal brass, the mad-dog IAD cops, and the not-so-surprising villains.
Still, Connelly knows his turf and perhaps he’ll map it more freshly
next time out.

The Black Death A Global History Of Humanity’s Most Devastating Pandemic

The Black Death

Category:History, Medical, Nonfiction

Description: "A magisterial history" (The Guardian) of humanity’s greatest natural disaster-the Black Death-that reveals the true global impact and terrible human cost of this calamity, from the renowned author of The Crusades and The Greatest Knight.
"Terrific-and truly terrifying. Thomas Asbridge puts a human face-or rather multiple faces-on the Black Death."-Eric Cline, author of 1177 B.C.
In the mid-fourteenth century, a lethal plague struck the medieval world, causing unimaginable suffering and destruction. The Black Death was unquestionably one of history’s defining episodes, yet a critical feature of its progress has often been ignored: the disease was not confined to Europe, but rather affected almost all of the known world, including the Near and Middle East, Byzantium, north Africa and Asia.
Tracing the pandemic’s course across the medieval globe, The Black Death contrasts the experiences of different peoples, including Christians, Muslims, and Jews, charting this catastrophe’s transformative effects on diverse aspects of medieval life. And crucially, Asbridge demonstrates that the plague was often at its most destructive in the Islamic world, where it ultimately played a role in the collapse of the mighty Mamluk Empire.
The Black Death also brings the human drama of this calamitous era to life, evoking the terror and the turmoil that beset cities such as London, Cairo, and Florence. Asbridge reconstructs the lives of the men, women and children who faced the Black Death-from ruling monarchs to peasant farmers-laying bare both the abject horror they endured and the courageous resolve they often demonstrated while striving to survive.
Uncovering a story that speaks to our own age, The Black Death highlights humankind’s capacity for compassion and resilience amidst a global crisis to explain how the medieval world confronted, and ultimately overcame, this shattering pandemic. Click to expand…
