Publié en 1845, "La Reine Margot" est un roman écrit par Alexandre Dumas.
Dumas romance la période suivant le mariage de Marguerite de Valois avec le jeune Roi de Navarre, futur Henri IV, en 1572. Dans le contexte de la Saint-Barthélémy, on y découvre les intrigues de cours, l’idylle inventée entre la Reine de Navarre et le Comte de la Molle, la conspiration visant à rendre la Navarre à son roi.
RÉSUMÉ
Catherine de Médicis règne, toute puissante, sur la France que gouverne tant bien que mal Charles IX, et sur ses enfants : ses fils, Charles évidemment, Henri duc d’Anjou, François duc d’Alençon, et sa fille Marguerite. Le roman s’ouvre sur le mariage de Marguerite de Valois, surnommée Margot, et Henri de Bourbon, roi de Navarre. Ce mariage entre une catholique et un protestant est destiné à ramener la paix dans le royaume. Mais Catherine et le roi Charles IX se préparent dans l’ombre à mater le parti protestant. Les frères de Charles complotent également pour prendre sa place et Henri de Navarre ne songe qu’à défendre sa vie.
Intrigues, alliances, complots, trahisons vont se succéder tandis que Margot entretient une tendre liaison avec un gentilhomme protestant, La Mole. Commence alors une lutte âpre et sans merci entre les deux camps, dont le point d’orgue sera le massacre de la Saint-Barthélémy. Charles IX, roi fantasque, d’une méfiance maladive, et perpétuellement sous l’influence de sa mère, finit par se prendre réellement d’amitié pour son beau-frère Henri (le futur Henri IV), au grand dam de Catherine de Médicis.
Après bien des évènements tragiques, Charles IX succombe à un mystérieux empoisonnement et meurt sans pouvoir assurer le trône à Henri de Navarre. C’est donc le duc d’Anjou, qui entre temps a été sacré roi de Pologne, qui revient en France pour prendre la succession de son frère, sous le nom d’Henri III.
