The Mixed Marriage Project (Dorothy Roberts)

1668068389 Atria Books, US 2026

Catergory: Biography & Autobiography, Sociology, Nonfiction

From Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body and a writer who "has brilliantly illuminated the Black experience in America for decades" (Bryan Stevenson), comes a spirited and riveting memoir of growing up in an interracial family in 1960s Chicago and a daughter’s journey to understand her parents’ marriage-and her own identity.
Dorothy Roberts grew up in a deeply segregated Chicago of the 1960s where relationships barely crossed the "colorline." Yet inside her own home, where her father was white and her mother a Black Jamaican immigrant, interracial marriage wasn’t just a part of her upbringing, it was a shared mission. Her father, an anthropologist, spent her entire childhood working on a book about Black-white marriages-a project he never finished but shaped every aspect of their family life.

As a 21-year-old graduate student, Dorothy’s father dedicated himself to the study of interracial marriage and her mother soon became his full-time partner in that work. Together over the years they interviewed over 500 couples and assembled stunning stories about interracial marriages that took place as early as the 1880s-studying, but also living, championing, and believing in their power to advance social equality.

Decades later, while sorting through her father’s papers, Roberts uncovers a truth that upends everything she thought she knew about her family: her father’s research didn’t begin with her parents’ love story-it came long before it. This discovery forces her to wrestle with her father’s intentions, her own views about interracial relationships, and where she fits in that story. Rather than finish the book her father never published, Roberts immerses herself in their archive of interviews to trace the story of her parents and to better understand her own.

Though grounded in her parents’ research, it’s Roberts’ captivating storytelling that drives this memoir. In following the arc of her parents’ interviews and marriage, The Mixed Marriage Project invites us into the everyday lives of interracial couples in Chicago over four decades. Along the way, Roberts reflects on her own childhood as a Black girl with a white father, and how those experiences shaped her into one of today’s most prominent public thinkers and scholars on race. Blurring the boundaries between the political and the personal, between memoir and history, The Mixed Marriage Project is a deeply moving meditation on family, race, identity, and love. The Mistletoe Murder And Other Stories By P D James (James, P. D.)

1524708925 Random House Large Print Publishing 2016

Catergory: Fiction, Mystery, Short Stories

**Throughout her illustrious career as the Queen of Crime, P. D. James was frequently commissioned by newspapers and magazines to write a special short story for Christmas. Four of the best are collected here.
"Mystery lovers are in for a very merry time. . . . Will entertain and delight." -USA Today**
Each of these stories is as playful as it is ingeniously plotted, the author’s sly humor as evident as her hallmark narrative elegance and shrewd understanding of some of the most complex–not to say the most damning–aspects of human nature. In "The Twelve Clues of Christmas," James’s iconic Scotland Yard detective Adam Dalgliesh is drawn into a case that is, in his own words, "pure Agatha Christie." In "A Very Commonplace Murder," a respectable clerk’s secret taste for pornography is only the first reason he finds for not coming forward as a witness to a terrible crime. "The Boxdale Inheritance" finds Dalgliesh’s godfather imploring him to reinvestigate a notorious murder that might ease the godfather’s mind about an inheritance–but which will reveal a truth that even the supremely upstanding Dalgliesh will keep to himself. And, in the title story, a bestselling crime novelist describes the crime she herself was involved in fifty years earlier. A treat for P. D. James’s legions of fans and anyone who enjoys the pleasures of a masterfuly wrought whodunit. Click to expand…

In the wake of a destructive Maine summer thunderstorm, an impenetrable
mist descends from the direction of a local military facility and infiltrates
the small town of Bridgton. David Drayton and his son, Billy, are dragged
into a living nightmare as unnatural and violent forces concealed by
the mist begin to emerge, wreaking havoc in their wake. Now trapped
in the local supermarket with a ragtag group of survivors, David unexpectedly

Description:
Full of politics, heart, and the sort of suspense that nobody in the world does better, The Mission Song turns John Le Carre’s laser eye for the complexity of the modern world on turmoil and conspiracy in Africa. Abandoned by both his Irish father and Congolese mother, Bruno Salvador has long looked for someone to guide his life. He has found it in Mr. Anderson of British Intelligence. Bruno’s African upbringing, and fluency in numerous African languages, has made him a top interpreter in London, useful to businesses, hospitals, diplomats — and spies. Working for Anderson in a clandestine facility known as the "Chat Room,"Salvo (as he’s known) translates intercepted phone calls, bugged recordings, and snatched voice mail messages. When Anderson sends him to a mysterious island to interpret during a secret conference between Central African warlords, Bruno thinks he is helping Britain bring peace to a bloody corner of the world. But then he hears something he should not have… By turns thriller, love story, and comic allegory of our times, The Mission Song is a crowning achievement, recounting an interpreter’s heroically naive journey out of the dark of Western hypocrisy and into the heart of lightness. The Minotaur Takes A Cigarette Break Steven Sherrill (Steven Sherrill)

Five thousand years out of the labyrinth, the Minotaur finds himself in the American South, living in a trailer park and working as a line cook at a steakhouse. No longer a devourer of human flesh, the Minotaur is a socially inept, lonely creature with very human needs. But over a two-week period, as his life dissolves into chaos, this broken and alienated immortal awakens to the possibility for happiness and to the capacity for love.

Steven Sherrill is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The recipient of a NEA Fellowship for Fiction, he has published four novels and one book of poetry. His debut novel, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break , was published in the UK and translated into eight languages. Neil Gaiman selected it as one of six audio books to launch "Neil Gaiman Presents" for Audible.com. A prolific painter and nascent musician, Sherrill is now a professor of English & Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona.

" . . . [W]ry, melancholy, beautiful first novel . . . " – The Guardian

"Sherrill’s narrative, with its dreamlike pace, shows myth coexisting with reality as naturally as it does in ancient epic." – Publishers Weekly

Description: In London during the Blitz, an amnesiac must outwit a twisted Nazi plot in this "master thriller" of espionage, murder, and deception (Time Magazine). On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, Arthur Rowe comes upon a charity fete in the gardens of a Cambridgeshire vicarage where he wins a game of chance. If only this were an ordinary day. Britain is under threat by Germany, and the air raid sirens that bring the bazaar to a halt expose Rowe as no ordinary man. Recently released from a psychiatric prison for the mercy killing of his wife, he is burdened by guilt, and now, in possession of a seemingly innocuous prize, on the run from a nest of Nazi spies who want him dead. Pursued on a dark odyssey through the bombed-out streets of London, he becomes enmeshed in a tangle of secrets that reach into the dark recesses of his own forgotten past. And there isn’t a soul he can trust, not even himself. Because Arthur Rowe doesn’t even know who he really is. "A storyteller of genius," Graham Greene composed his serpentine mystery of authentic wartime espionage-and one the author’s personal favorites-while working for MI6 (Evelyn Waugh). But The Ministry of Fear "is more than a mere thriller . . . [it's a] hypnotic moonstone of a novel" (The New York Times). Click to expand…

The Mind Of God Neuroscience Faith And A Search For The Soul (Dr. Jay Lombard)

9780553418675 Harmony/Rodale/Convergent 2017

Catergory: Health & Fitness, Religion & Spirituality, Science, Nonfiction

For fans of Deepak Chopra, Rudy Tanzi, and Andrew Newberg. A renowned behavioral neurologist provides insights to some of the most curious spiritual questions we all face.
Is there a God?
It’s a question billions of people have asked since the dawn of time. You would think by now we’d have a satisfactory, universal answer. No such luck.Or maybe we do and we just need to look in the right place. For Dr. Jay Lombard that place is the brain, and more importantly the mind, that center of awareness and consciousness that creates reality.
In The Mind of God, Dr. Lombard employs case studies from his own behavioral neurology practice to explore the spiritual conundrums that we all ask ourselves: What is the nature of God? Does my life have purpose? What’s the meaning of our existence? Are we free? What happens to us when we die?
For Lombard, these metaphysical questions are a jumping-off point for exploring the brain in search of the seat of the soul. It is neuroscience, the author contends, and how we and our brains interpret what’s going on around us that can lead us to a deeper and more fulfilling faith.
Mixing his personal experiences in the medical field (including compelling cases such as the male patient who really thought he was pregnant and a woman who literally scared herself to death) along with his own visionary insight into spiritual experience, Lombard has much to tell us about the nature and power of belief-and what we can do to focus our beliefs in a positive direction.
If you want to find more meaning in your life or are searching for a deeper understanding of why we believe what we believe, then this book can lead to an exciting transformation in the way you see and understand the world around you. With cutting-edge research and provocative case studies, renowned behavioral neurologist provides insights to some of the most curious spiritual questions of mortality. Click to expand…
