Catergory: Fiction, Short Stories

In the early 1970s, literary journals that contained Andre Dubus’ short stories were passed around among admiring readers. When his debut collection, Separate Flights, arrived in 1975, it was immediately celebrated and won the Boston Globe‘s Laurence L. & Thomas Winship/PEN New England Award.
The collection includes the novella We Don’t Live Here Anymore, which served as the basis for the 2004 film of the same title (nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival); the novella also introduces Dubus’ writer-protagonist Hank Allison, a character who continues to appear throughout his work.
Two years later, the title story of Dubus’ sophomore collection Adultery and Other Choices continued the exploits of Hank Allison. "The title story alone will make it worth your while to go out and get the book", wrote the New York Times Book Review.
While the collection’s opening stories focus on the fragile nature of youth, later stories shift to darker struggles of adulthood, such as in "Andromache" – Dubus’ first story to appear in The New Yorker (1968) – which traces the aftermath of a tragic death during wartime.
The complete list of narrators includes Robert Fass, Joe Barrett, Bronson Pinchot, Cassandra Campbell, Hillary Huber, Traber Burns, and Andre Dubus. Click to expand…

Book Description
======
Lawyer Andy CarpenterÆs true passion is the Tara Foundation, the dog
rescue organization he runs with his friend Willie Miller. All kinds
of dogs make their way to the foundation, and it isnÆt that surprising
to find a dog abandoned at the shelter one morning, though it was accompanied
by a mysterious anonymous note. But they are quite surprised when they
scan the dogÆs embedded chip, and discover that they know this dog.
He is the ôDNA dog.ö

Two and a half years ago, Jill Hickman was a single mother of an adopted
baby. Her baby and dog were kidnapped in broad daylight in Eastside
Park, and they havenÆt been seen since. A tip came in that IDÆd a former
boyfriend of HickmanÆs, Keith Wachtel, as the kidnapper. A search of
his house showed no sign of the child but did uncover more incriminating
evidence, and the clincher that generated WachtelÆs arrest was some
dog hair, notable since Wachtel did not have a dog. DNA tests showed
conclusively that the hair belonged to HickmanÆs dog. Wachtel was convicted
of kidnapping, but the dog and baby were never found.

Now, with the reappearance of the dog, the case is brought back to light,
and the search for the child renewed. Goaded by his wifeÆs desire to
help a friend and fellow mother and AndyÆs desire to make sure the real
kidnapper is in jail, Andy and his team enter the case. But what they
start to uncover is far more complicated and dangerous than they ever
expected, in David Rosenfelt’s Collared.

Catergory: Science Fiction & Fantasy

A prequel to the lauded Coldfire trilogy, Friedman’s latest novel mixes the best of dark fantasy and chilling sci-fi.
A ship full of colonists arrive on a seemingly hospitable planet, only to discover that it harbors a terrifying secret. Soon the settlers find themselves caught up in a desperate battle for survival against the fae, a natural force with the power to prey upon the human mind itself, bringing a person’s greatest fears and darkest nightmares to life.
As Colony Commander Leon Case and Chief Medic Lise Perez struggle to find a way to control the fae before more people die, other settlers have ideas of their own.and they may prove more of a threat to colony than the fae itself.
Nightborn: Coldfire Rising is a tale that blends sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, suspenseful and emotionally intense, as a handful of humans struggle to survive on an alien world that seems determined to kill them. In the end they will have to draw upon both scientific knowledge and mystical traditions to save themselves.

Amazon.com Review
Why isn’t T. Jefferson Parker as famous as, say, James Patterson or Robert B.
Parker? He’s that good, and in some ways better. In Cold Pursuit, his 11th
novel, San Diego homicide cop Tom McMichael finds himself investigating the
bludgeoning death of Pete Braga, a prominent city patriarch who was also a
blood enemy of the McMichael family. It’s a complex case fraught with
political and economic pressures, ugly family history, police corruption, and
multiple red herrings, made more complex by McMichael’s romantic attraction to
a key suspect.

Parker’s writing is a pleasure from the first sentence to the last:
intelligent, often quietly poetic, cliché-free, and as crisp and dry as a good
Pinot Gris. Here is the book’s opening paragraph, which accomplishes several
scene-setting tasks while pleasing both ear and brain:

That night the wind came hard off the Pacific, an El Nino event that would
blow three inches of rain onto the roofs of San Diego. It was the first big
storm of the season, early January and overdue. Palm fronds lifted with a
plastic hiss and slapped against the windows of McMichael’s apartment. The
digitized chirp of his phone sounded ridiculous against the steady wind
outside. At times the book’s richly complex plot gets confusing, and some
sections aren’t especially suspenseful. However, every page is absorbing and
affecting, and the ending is a shocker. Peopled by a teeming cast of
full-blooded characters and set in a San Diego so vivid you can smell the
beach and the blood, Cold Pursuit may be Parker’s subtlest, most satisfying
tale yet. –Nicholas H. Allison –This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Parker, whose Silent Joe won an Edgar in 2001, can turn his hand to many
genres: this one is a thriller with elements of family feud, and with a
setting-San Diego in an unusually rainy winter-that is wonderfully moody.
Homicide cop Tom McMichael is called in on the murder of wealthy old Pete
Braga, a legendary local character who was once a tuna fisherman and now moves
in the city’s top financial circles. The problem is that his Portuguese family
and McMichael’s Irish one have a rivalry going back two generations. The
details of that past, and the picture that emerges of two feisty old men
locked into a bitter battle, are the brightest part of the book. The actual
plot is more conventional: Braga’s attractive nurse is an obvious suspect, so
it is unwise for Tom to fall for her. Was the patriarch’s killing related to
local politics, or perhaps to his changed will? There are numerous red
herrings-including a lurid subplot about a crooked cop and a very surprising
commodity being smuggled across the border from Mexico-before the violent,
rather improbable denouement. It’s not unusual for a thriller to begin much
better than it ends, but the more eloquent passages of Cold Pursuit make the
routine ones doubly disappointing.

Book Description

The latest installment in the Alan Banks series, and the sequel to the
Edgar-nominated In A Dry Season again expands the boundaries of the
traditional English village with Robinson’s canny exploration of contemporary
evil and his wry characterization of a detective who remains a mystery
to himself. Chief Inspector Alan Banks, whose children he admits to
ignoring until their problems grew too great, finds his domestic situation
of estranged wife, rogue son, and rebellious teen daughter looking rosy
compared to that of his archenemy and boss, Chief Constable Riddle.
Six months after Riddle’s 16-year-old daughter, Emily, ran away from
a posh boarding school, her younger brother discovers her, naked, on
a pornographic Web site. Despite his longstanding detestation of Banks,
Riddle begs him to find out what has become of his daughter. Banks must
investigate as a private citizen, because of Riddle’s fears for his
own reputation, complicating his tour of the London high-end drug world
that Emily now inhabits. Banks discovers the precariousness of Emily’s
position in her new life and, more disturbingly, the grotesque truth
behind a facade of perfect family life. A cunningly constructed plot,
enhanced by Robinson’s engaging descriptions and insights.
