This collection of Catherine Asaro’s short fiction contains five stories,
including the Nebula Award-winning novella, Spacetime Pool, the Hugo
and Nebula nominated novella Aurora in Four Voices, and an essay on
Asaro’s use of mathematics in her fiction.

The anthology also includes the critically acclaimed The City of Cries,
which won the Prism Award for Best Novella and The Best of the Best
in 2006, and the Book Buyers Best award for novella.

The City of Cries forms the beginning of Asaro’s upcoming novel.

– "Introduction" by Kate Dolan gives some background on the advantages
of short fiction and the author’s reasons for writing these tales.

– "Aurora in Four Voices" (Analog, 1998) relates the consequences of
a meeting between Soz and a man framed for murder. This is a Skolian
Imperialate tale.

– "Ave de Paso" (Redshift, 2001) is a fantasy tale about the mourning
ritual of Tina and her cousin. This tale introduces the heroine of a
Skolian Imperialate novel.

– "The Spacetime Pool" (Analog, 2008) describes the meeting of a mathematician
and the heir to an empire in another timeline.

– "Light and Shadows" (Analog, 1994) concerns Kelric and a very hot
spaceplane. This is a Skolian Imperialate tale.

– "City of Cries" Down These Dark Spaceways, 2005) resolves the case
of a missing prince from the Majda House. This is a Skolian Imperialate
tale.

– "A Poetry of Angles and Dreams" (first publication) is a simple explanation
of the mathematical basis of "Aurora in Four Voices" and "The Spacetime
Pool".
