Dragonkin Dungeon Book 1 (Jace Cannon)

Royal Guard Publishing LLC 2025

Catergory: Literature & Fiction

Silas is a simple bartender near the Dragon Dungeon, a mythical place that no adventurer has ever returned from…until a beautiful horned stranger walks out of the dungeon and into his bar. To save her from the assassins close on her heels, Silas takes a fatal strike to the stomach…
And it doesn’t kill him.
By some act of fate, Silas has manifested the power to reflect any damage done to him. Now on the run, Silas flees into the seven-level dungeon, where each floor is ruled by a gorgeous dragon goddess who has taken human form. And as it turns out, Silas can steal power from all of them…and maybe steal their hearts, too.
But the dungeon has fallen under evil rule, and Silas must venture deeper to save it. With a feisty swordswoman, a spunky lunatic, and a lazy seductress by his side, Silas might not only defeat the goddess at the bottom of the dungeon-he might also become a god of dragons himself. Click to expand…

ôThe torch has been passed and burns more brightly than ever in this

ôTodd McCaffrey does something I didnÆt think anyone could do: he writes
Anne McCaffreyÆs Pern. . . . This is Pern, in the hands of a new master-grade
harper, carefully trained in the old traditions, but scoring his own

ôA dramatic, thoroughly captivating tale, steeped in the lore and well-drawn
characterizations of the people and the dragons for which the Pern novels

Product Description
The grim specter of sickness looms over the Weyrs of Pern, felling fire-lizards
and posing a potentially devastating threat to their dragon cousins,
PernÆs sole defense against the deadly phenomenon that is Thread. Fiona,
the youngest and only surviving daughter of Lord Bemin, is just coming
of age, and about to assume the duties of a Weyrwoman, when word spreads
that dragons have indeed begun succumbing to the new contagion. With
the next season of Threadfall quickly approaching, and the already diminished
ranks of the dragons once more under siege, every Weyr across Pern is
in crisis mode. It is hardly the time for disturbing distractions û
such as the strange voice Fiona suddenly hears in her mind at the darkest
and most urgent moments.
Circumstances and the mood of the weyrfolk worsen when advance patrols
relay the dreaded news that black dust û the unmistakable herald of
falling Thread û has been sighted. As more dragons sicken and die, leaving
only a new generation of weyrlings too young to succeed them, Weyrleader
BÆNik and queen rider Lorana arrive from Benden Weyr to comb Fort WeyrÆs
archives in a desperate search for clues from the past that may hold
the solution to the plague.

But could the actual past itself prove the pathway to salvation for
PernÆs stricken dragons and the entire imperiled planet? Guided by a
mysterious ally from a wholly unexpected place, and trusting in the
unique dragon gift for transcending time, Fiona will join a risky expedition
with far-reaching consequences for both PernÆs future and her personal
destiny.

Heart, give voice to sing
Of life on dragonwings!

Fort Weyr, AL 507.11.17, Second Interval

ô…and you wouldnÆt believe how many holders theyÆve saved over the
last ten Turns,ö Benden Weyrleader MÆtal said, continuing to press his
case for the watch- whers.

The three remaining Weyrleaders had adjourned to Fort WeyrÆs Council
Room to await the Hatching and confer.

CÆrion of Ista Weyr snorted and shook his head. ôIÆm sorry, MÆtal, but
the timeÆs all wrong,ö he said. ôThreads will be falling all too soon
and here you are with this radical notion of training dragons and watch-
whers to ?y Threads together at night.ö

MÆtal took a slow, calming breath to sti?e the hot retort he wanted
to make. He looked expectantly to KÆlior.

The youngest Weyrleader of Pern shifted uneasily under the gray- haired
manÆs gaze. Well aware that MÆtal had been a Weyrleader since before
KÆlior was born, he found it hard to refute such a length of experience.
Of course, CÆrion was even older still and had made his feelings well-
known.

ôLook,ö MÆtal began again, his hands outstretched in a placating gesture,
ôjust thinkûö

He broke off as his ears detected the unmistakable hum of dragons at
Hatching. He smiled and gestured at KÆlior. ôWeyrleader?ö

KÆlior was already on his feet and heading for the doorway that led
to the Hatching Grounds.

Kindan and Kentai, Fort WeyrÆs harper, were waiting on the stairs to
the viewing stands in the Hatching Grounds, ready to escort the more
feeble or overly- excited holders up to a good perch. Kindan nodded
to MÆtal as the Weyrleader passed by, still engrossed in fer¡vent conversation
with the Istan and Fort Weyrleaders.

ôI see DÆgan has departed,ö Kentai murmured to Kindan as the Weyrleaders
climbed out of earshot.
Kindan shrugged. He knew that MÆtal had not been counting on DÆganÆs
support anyway. He was less pleased at the looks heÆd seen on CÆrionÆs
and KÆliorÆs facesûneither looked very thrilled with what MÆtal was
saying to them. Kindan, who was familiar with MÆtalÆs plan, shook his
head. CouldnÆt the other Weyrleaders see that watch- whers, with their
night- seeing eyes, were supposed to ?y the night Threadfalls?

ôLord Itaral, Lady Nelyssa,ö Kentai called as he spotted the Lord and
Lady Holders of Ruatha Hold. He smiled as he spotted the third person
in their party. ôI see that youÆve convinced Lady Ilyssa to join you
this time.ö He nodded to their young daughter and raised an elbow invitingly.
ôMay I escort you to your seats?ö

Ilyssa blushed, but, overcoming her embarrassed smile, curt¡sied most
elegantly and took his arm.

ôThis is Kindan,ö Kentai said with a nod toward the other harper. ôHeÆs
come with Lord MÆtal from Benden Weyr.ö

Lady Nelyssa started at his name and peered at him more closely. ôArenÆt
you the oneûö She caught herself and rapidly switched her comment. ôûI
mean, arenÆt you the young man who gave up his watch- wher to Nuella,
the WherMaster?ö

ôAmong other things, I am known for that,ö Kindan agreed, in¡clining
his head politely and giving her a slight smile. He knew what sheÆd
started to say, and wondered if he would ever live down the stigma of
the ?re in the Harper HallÆs Archive rooms. He hadnÆt been solely responsible,
after all, and heÆd fought the hard¡est to put the blaze out, preserving
countless other Records . . .

ôKindan!ö

Before he could even react to the sound of his name, the speaker pummeled
into him, clutching him tightly about the waist and trying her best
to squeeze the breath out of him. Brilliant sea- blue eyes looked out
from behind a lock of rebellious honey- blond hair as the youngster
turned her head and called back accusingly to the well- dressed Lord
Holder behind her, ôYou didnÆt tell me heÆd be here!ö
Bemin of Fort Hold smiled indulgently at his daughter. ôThere are such
things as surprises, Fiona,ö he said with a wink.

ôOh, Kindan, itÆs so good to see you!ö Fiona exclaimed, burying her
face once more in KindanÆs chest.

ôItÆs good to see you, too,ö Kindan replied. He held out a hand to Fort
HoldÆs Lord Holder. The older man, face lined with age and sad memories,
took it in his own and gripped it tightly.

ôGood to see you again, lad,ö Bemin said. He looked up the stairs. ôI
think weÆd better get up there or the dragons will all have hatched.ö-

Fiona turned toward the steps, ?rmly locking her arms around KindanÆs
elbow. ôHarper Kindan,ö she said, sounding every inch a Lord HolderÆs
daughter, ôwould you do me the honor of escorting me?ö

ôIt would be my pleasure, Lady Fiona,ö Kindan replied with equal aplomb.
A bronze ?re- lizard darted down from the heights, alighted for a moment
on KindanÆs shoulder, chirped happily to him, then rose again in the
air.

Lord Bemin chuckled. ôI see that Valla followed you.ö

ôI canÆt keep him away from a Hatching,ö Kindan confessed. He craned
his neck up and scanned the swarm of ?re- lizards over¡head. ôWhere
are Jokester and Fire?ö

ôWe left them behind,ö Bemin said. ôI doubt either of them is as well-
trained as yours.ö

ôWell, theyÆve barely two Turns out of the shell,ö Kindan allowed. ôGive
them time.ö

ôLike all youngsters, they are impetuous and brash,ö Bemin agreed with
a twinkle in his eyes. ôWhy, you would not believe where I found my
daughterûö

ôFather!ö Fiona protested, a warm blush highlighting her freckles. Bemin
laughed.

ôChasing tunnel snakes again?ö Kindan asked her in a voice pitched for
her ears alone.

He was not successful, as Bemin snorted, saying, ôI cannot teach her
any decorum at all!ö He continued, ôShe was hours in the bath and IÆm
sure thereÆs still dirt on her.ö

Kindan felt Fiona grab him tighter and heard her groan, but when he
glanced down he saw the smile in her eyes.

ôHeÆs sounding much happier,ö he said quietly.

ôHe deserves it,ö Fiona replied.

Kindan nodded in agreement. Lord Holder Bemin had kept his Hold together
twelve Turns before when the Plague had struck and killed nearly one
in four of his Holders, including his wife and all his children, save
for the youngest, Fiona.

Kindan, sent from the Harper Hall to Fort Hold in disgrace after the
?re, had helped FortÆs old Healer, Kilti, to do everything pos¡sible
for the sick and dying. In the end, Kilti had succumbed to the Plague
himself, leaving Kindan, at fourteen, in charge.

Fiona cocked her head at a change in the sound and then leapt up the
steps, dragging Kindan along. ôCome on, theyÆre hatching!ö

Indeed they were. Kindan, Fiona, and Bemin found seats saved for them
next to Lord Itaral and his family.

ôJust some greens,ö Ilyssa assured Fiona as she patted the empty seat
sheÆd saved for her friend. Fiona relinquished her grip on Kindan with
an apologetic look and happily took her place be¡side Ilyssa. The two
leaned toward each other and began to speak in low voices.

The hot sands rapidly ?lled with white- robed candidates, ?own in by
Fort WeyrÆs bronze dragons. The rest of FortÆs dragons, perched high
above, hummed in welcome, the sound growing louder as the eggs began
to rock and crack.

Suddenly there was a hush as the ?rst egg cracked open. A brown dragonet
?opped out, awkward and creeling. A group of candidates darted anxiously
around itûsome moving toward it, some away. And thenûone candidate reached
out to the baby dragon and Impressed. The dragons hummed approvingly.-
Another dragonet burst forth from its egg, and another, and another.
From the stands, it seemed as though of tide of white- robed candidates
?owed and ebbed around the blue, green, brown, and bronze dragonets
until, ?nally, one white- robed ?gure stood pro¡tectively beside each
dragonet as the miracle of Impression was repeated.

ôLook there!ö Fiona called, pointing toward one of the larger eggs.
ôIs that a queen?ö

ôIt could be,ö Kindan said. A great rent appeared in the shell, followed
moments later by a golden head. ôIt is!ö

The little queen made quick work of extricating herself from her egg
while all around the bronzes crooned excitedly. Freed at last, the little
gold queen walked around, looking from one candidate to another.

ôWhat would happen if there wasnÆt a suitable candidate?ö Fiona muttered
to Kindan, who shrugged in response. The girls were trying; one bold
girl just barely dodged the dragonetÆs awkward movements, pulled aside
at the last moment by a shorter, younger, dark- haired girl.

Kentai had overheard the exchange. ôThere are Records,ö he said, looking
uncomfortable.

ôWell, sheÆs coming this way,ö Ilyssa noted with excitement.

ôWeÆre near the exit to the Bowl,ö Kentai remarked. ôMaybe sheÆs looking
for someone out there.ö

She wasnÆt. Still ignoring the girls clustered aroun… –This text

In the midst of a crisis, Fiona, the daughter of Lord Bemin, is coming
of age and is about to take on the duties of a Weyrwoman. It’s a difficult
time on Pern because a terrible sickness is everywhere, affecting the
fire-dragons who are the planet’s defense against the recurring threat
of Thread. Fiona must draw on her father’s training to find a solution.
Emily Durante narrates in an earnest tone that projects fondness for
the characters. She captures the youth and enthusiasm of a generation
that is taking on responsibility and making a contribution despite its
youth and inexperience. Fiona’s gift of "mind speech" is presented with
a touch of reverberation. J.E.M. ⌐ AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

Dragon’s Time – Anne McCaffery

Dragon’s Time – Anne McCaffery

Dragon’s Time (2011)

(A book in the Dragonriders of Pern series)

A novel by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey

For the first time in more than three years, bestselling authors Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey, mother and son, have teamed up again to do what they do best: add a fresh chapter to the most beloved science fiction series of all time, the Dragonriders of Pern.

Even though Lorana cured the plague that was killing the dragons of Pern, sacrificing her queen dragon in the process, the effects of the disease were so devastating that there are no longer enough dragons available to fight the fall of deadly Thread. And as the situation grows more dire, a pregnant Lorana decides that she must take drastic steps in the quest for help. Meanwhile, back at Telgar Weyr, Weyrwoman Fiona, herself pregnant, and the harper Kindan must somehow keep morale from fading altogether in the face of the steadily mounting losses of dragons and their riders. But time weighs heavily against them – until Lorana finds a way to use time itself in their favor. It’s a plan fraught with risk, however. For attempting time travel means tampering with the natural laws of the universe, which could drastically alter history – and destiny – forever. Or so it has always been thought. But Lorana discovers that if the laws of time can’t be broken without consequences, it may still be possible to bend them. To ensure the future of Pern, she’s willing to take the fateful chance – even if it demands another, even greater, sacrifice.

Dragon’s Kin
(A book in the Renegades of Pern series)
(2003)
A novel by
Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey

Young Kindan has no expectations other than joining his father in the
mines of Camp Natalon, a coal mining settlement struggling to turn a
profit far from the great Holds where the presence of dragons and their
riders means safety and civilization. Mining is fraught with danger.
Fortunately, the camp has a watch-wher, a creature distantly related
to dragons and uniquely suited to specialized work in the dark, cold
mineshafts. KindanÆs father is the watch-wherÆs handler, and his son
sometimes helps him out. But even that important job promises no opportunity
outside the mine.

Then disaster strikes. In one terrible instant, Kindan loses his family
and the camp loses its watch-wher. Fathers are replaced by sons in the
mineûexcept for Kindan, who is taken in by the campÆs new Harper. Grieving,
Kindan finds a measure of solace in a burgeoning musical talent . .
. and in a new friendship with Nuella, a mysterious girl no one seems
to know exists. It is Nuella who assists Kindan when he is selected
to hatch and train a new watch-wher, a job that forces him to give up
his dream of becoming a Harper; and it is Nuella who helps him give
new meaning to his life.

Meanwhile, sparked by the tragedy, long-simmering tensions are dividing
the camp. Far below the surface, a group of resentful miners hides a
deadly secret. As warring factions threaten to explode, Nuella and Kindan
begin to discover unknown talents in the misunderstood watch-wherûtalents
that could very well save an entire Hold. During their time teaching
the watch-wher, the two learn some things themselves: that even a seemingly
impossible dream is never completely out of reach . . . and that light
can be found even in darkness
