I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying Youngmi Mayer – (MAYER, YOUNGMI)

Catergory: Essays, Literary Criticism, Nonfiction, Humor (Nonfiction)

From standup comedian Youngmi Mayer, an unforgettable memoir written with "raw, enviable freedom that simply floors you," interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality in America, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner).
"Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole."
It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering.
In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea, while reflecting how years later, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom, all the while interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality.
Youngmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the listener what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart, heart-wrenching, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom. Click to expand…

I’ll Tell You When I’m Home – (Hala Alyan)

The rich and deeply personal debut memoir by award-winning Palestinian American poet and novelist Hala Alyan, whose experience of motherhood via surrogacy forces her to reckon with her own past, and the legacy of her family’s exile and displacement, all in the name of a new future.
After a decade of yearning for parenthood, years marked by miscarriage after miscarriage, Hala Alyan makes the decision to use a surrogate. In this charged time, she turns to the archetype of the waiting woman-the Scheherazade who tells stories to ensure another dawn-to confront her own narratives of motherhood, love, and inheritance.
As her baby grows in the body of another woman, in another country, Hala finds her own life unraveling-a husband who wants to leave; the cost of past traumas and addictions threatening to resurface; the city of her youth, Beirut, on the brink of crisis. She turns to family stories and communal myths: of grandmothers mapping their lives through Palestine, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon; of eradicated villages and invading armies; of places of refuge that proved only temporary; of men that left and women that stayed; of the contradictions of her own Midwestern childhood, and adolescence in various Arab cities.
Meanwhile, as the baby grows from the size of a poppyseed to a grain of rice, then a lime, and beyond, Hala gathers the stories that are her legacy, setting down the ones that confine, holding close those that liberate. It is emotionally charged, painstaking work, but now the stakes are higher: how to honor ancestors and future generations alike in the midst of displacement? How to impart love for those who are no longer here, for places one can no longer touch?
A stunningly lyrical and brutally honest quest for motherhood, selfhood, and peoplehood, I’ll Tell You When I’m Home is a powerful story of unraveling and becoming, of destruction and redemption, and of homelands lost and recreated. Click to expand…

I’ll Never Call Him Dad Again Caroline Darian (Caroline Darian)

978-1464257964 Sourcebooks, US 2025

Catergory: Sociology Books on Abuse, Dysfunctional Relationships, Biographies & Memoirs of Women

International Bestseller
"I am in awe of your courage…for you to be willing to share the truth of your life is an act of victory and triumph… You are a mighty woman. Thank you for writing this book." -Oprah Winfrey, Global Media Leader and Host of The Oprah Podcast
What if your greatest protector became your deepest betrayal?
When Caroline Darian received a call from the police, her world cracked in two. Her father-beloved, trusted, admired-had been arrested. What followed was a nightmare no daughter should ever face: the revelation that her mother, Gisèle Pelicot, had been drugged and abused for years-by the man they both called family.
But this memoir isn’t just about what happened.
I’ll Never Call Him Dad Again is about what happened next.
With unflinching honesty and fierce compassion, Darian tells the story of how she and her mother refused to be defined by silence. Together, they pursued justice in the courtroom-and sparked a global reckoning outside of it. Through the viral #MendorsPas: Stop Chemical Submission: Don’t Put Me Under campaign, they’ve taken on the epidemic of chemical submission and lifted a rallying cry for victims worldwide.
For readers of Know My Name , The Choice , and The Fact of a Body , this is a must-read for anyone drawn to stories of truth, transformation, and fearless resilience. Click to expand…

Turns out my feelings weren’t so one-sided after all. But Abel swears he’s too much of a bad boy for the type of relationship I’m looking for, and warns me not to fall in love with him.

I Love You Like It’s 1999 Unabridged (Assis, 1839-1908 Machado de.)

0195103084 Oxford University Press 1997

Catergory: Computers & Technology

As heard on NPR’s Science Friday, discover the book recommended by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Daniel Pink, and Adam Grant: an "accessible, informative, and hilarious" introduction to the weird and wonderful world of artificial intelligence (Ryan North).
"You look like a thing and I love you" is one of the best pickup lines ever…according to an artificial intelligence trained by scientist Janelle Shane, creator of the popular blog AI Weirdness. She creates silly AIs that learn how to name paint colors, create the best recipes, and even flirt (badly) with humans – all to understand the technology that governs so much of our daily lives.
We rely on AI every day for recommendations, for translations, and to put cat ears on our selfie videos. We also trust AI with matters of life and death, on the road and in our hospitals. But how smart is AI really…and how does it solve problems, understand humans, and even drive self-driving cars?
Shane delivers the answers to every AI question you’ve ever asked, and some you definitely haven’t. Like, how can a computer design the perfect sandwich? What does robot-generated Harry Potter fan-fiction look like? And is the world’s best Halloween costume really "Vampire Hog Bride"?
In this smart, often hilarious introduction to the most interesting science of our time, Shane shows how these programs learn, fail, and adapt – and how they reflect the best and worst of humanity.
You Look Like a Thing and I Love You is the perfect book for anyone curious about what the robots in our lives are thinking.
"I can’t think of a better way to learn about artificial intelligence, and I’ve never had so much fun along the way." (Adam Grant, New York Times best-selling author of Originals)

I Leave It Up To You – (Jinwoo Chong)

Catergory: LGBTQ+

From the award-winning author of Flux comes "an endearing novel about second chances" (The Washington Post), with wise insights into love, family, and the art of sushi.
"Wise and poignant [with] mouthwatering descriptions of food . . . I Leave It Up to You is about finding-or rediscovering-the people who make hardship worth enduring."-Bobby Finger, The New York Times Book Review
A coma can change a man, but the world Jack Jr. awakens to is one he barely recognizes. His advertising job is history, his Manhattan apartment is gone, and the love of his life has left him behind. He’s been asleep for two years; with no one to turn to, he realizes it’s been ten years since he last saw his family.
Lost and disoriented, he makes a reluctant homecoming back to the bustling Korean American enclave of Fort Lee, New Jersey; back into the waiting arms of his parents, who are operating under the illusion that he never left; and back to Joja, their ever-struggling sushi restaurant that he was set to inherit before he ran away from it all. As he steps back into the life he abandoned-learning his Appa’s life lessons over crates of tuna on bleary-eyed 4 a.m. fish runs, doling out amberjack behind the omakase counter while his Umma tallies the night’s pitiful number of customers, and sparring with his recovering alcoholic brother, James-he embraces new roles, too: that of romantic interest to the nurse who took care of him, and that of sage (but underqualified) uncle to his gangly teenage nephew.
There is value in the joyous rhythms of this once-abandoned life. But second chances are an even messier business than running a restaurant, and the lure of a self-determined path might, once again, prove too hard to resist. Click to expand…

It’s 1982 and the Ramones are in a gutter-bound spiral. Following a run of inconsistent albums and deep in the throes of internal tensions, the legendary quartet is about to crash and burn.
Enter Richie Ramone.
Then a 26-year-old from New Jersey named Richard Reinhardt, he’s snapped up by the group to be their new drummer and instantly goes from the obscurity of the underground club scene to membership in the most famous punk-rock band of all time, revitalizing the pioneering outfit with his powerful, precise, and blindingly fast beats-composing classic cuts like the menacing anthem "Somebody Put Something in My Drink" and becoming the only Ramones percussionist to sing lead vocals for the group. With the Ramones, he performs over five hundred shows at venues all around the world and records three storming studio albums-before abruptly quitting the band and going deep underground. To most fans, this crucial figure in the band’s history has remained a mystery, his tale untold.
