Often misunderstood by the general public, psychological operations (PSYOP) enable U.S. forces to influence a target population’s opinions and behavior by affecting their impressions, thoughts and emotions.
Psychological operations take many forms. They may be overt or covert; they may involve media as diverse as radio, television, loudspeaker broadcast, leaflet drop or social media. They may seek to influence combatant groups, civilian populations or a combination thereof. Whatever their form, effective psychological operations take control of the information received by the target, inserting the required memetic payload into the consumed media in a manner the target cannot easily ignore.
In that regard, military psychological operations share many similarities with a wide variety of marketing operations, and the information contained within this series of U.S. Army manuals will be useful to media professionals in all fields, particularly those tasked with building and operating influence organizations and campaigns.

Den Beginn dieser Arbeit sollen eine kurze Darstellung der Geschichte des Roadmovies und die des amerikanischen Western machen. Es soll überprüft werden in wieweit Wim Wenders auf formale und inhaltliche Elemente des Western zurückgreift. Um dieser Frage auf den Grund gehen zu können, sollen an einem Szenenvergleich zwischen ‘Paris, Texas’ und John Fords ‘The Seachers’ eventuelle Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede herausgearbeitet werden. Daß die Wahl des Vergleichswerk auf einen Western von John Ford fiel, liegt zum einen daran, dass in einigen Arbeiten über Paris, Texas bereits Vergleiche zu John Ford gezogen wurden und zum anderen, dass Wim Wenders nie einen Hehl daraus gemacht hat, von John Ford inspiriert worden zu sein. Wenders, der zu den Regisseuren des Neuen Deutschen Films gehört, ist wohl neben R.W. Fassbinder als einer der am stärksten vom amerikanischen Kino beeinflussten Künstler einzuordnen. An Hand des Vergleiches der jeweiligen Anfangs- und Endszenen möchte ich aufzeigen das Wenders: ‘Paris, Texas’ sich stärker an der bildästhetische Komposition orientiert als an einem inhaltlichen Motiv. Selbstverständlich ist die Frage nach inhaltlichen Parallelen schnell geklärt, doch möchte ich diese Frage auf einer abstrakteren Ebene behandeln und untersuchen ob es sich bei Wenders nicht vielleicht um eine modernisierte Behandlung des klassischen Westernstoffes handeln könnte, in der die Frage nach einer immer noch existierenden ‘Frontier’ behandelt wird. Später soll noch darauf eingegangen werden, was Wim Wenders mit seinem Werk gelungen ist, nämlich ein deutscher Autoren-Film, der amerikanischer in seiner Machart nicht hätte sein können. Nach seinen frustrierenden Erlebnissen mit ‘Hammet’, Gelang es Wenders seine Vision von einem amerikanischen Autoren-Film zu realisieren. Mit Hilfe des Drehbuchautoren Sam Shepard Gelang es Wenders ein Werk zu schaffen, welches in seiner Konsequenz für Wim Wenders persönlich als auch für den deutschen Film allgemein einen entscheidenden Wendepunkt darstellt. Letztlich sollen die Ergebnisse zusammengetragen werden und wir betrachten nochmals die ‘Genre Frage’.
