Description:

Determined to keep his friends’ children safe, Myron Bolitar makes two neighborhood girls promise to call him if they are ever in a bind. Several nights later, a call comes in at two o’clock a.m. The next day, a girl is missing, and Myron is the last person who saw her. And now, he must race to find her, before she is gone forever…

From Publishers Weekly
After a six-year hiatus, it’s good to herald the return of Myron Bolitar, the former Boston Celtics basketball star who became a sports agent and crime solver in Coben’s sprightly, exciting series. Even better, it’s great fun to hear Coben himself performing this excellent audio version. As a reader, Coben has a quality best summed up by the Yiddish word hamishe (homelike, in its weaker translation). He may not be Laurence Olivier, but he sure knows how to make believers of his listeners. When Bolitar talks about going back to live with his parents in New Jersey, Coben catches the basic boyishness of his aging hero and the impact such a move has on Myron’s love life. Of course, the world has gotten a lot more complicated: Bolitar’s ladyfriend lost her husband on September 11. When he offers to help her teenage daughter, he quickly finds himself involved in some very dangerous adventures. With fading sports stars behaving badly in real life, it’s a great pleasure to see that Bolitar has found ways to survive honorably.

From Booklist
Starred Review Coben, the reigning master of clockwork suspense, and winner of the trifecta of mystery-writing honors–the Edgar, the Agatha, and the Shamus–produces a fascinating hybrid thriller here. Coben began his career writing detective novels starring Myron Bolitar, an ex-Celtics basketball player turned entertainment agent. For the past six years, he has concentrated on stand-alone thrillers. Coben’s novels are noted for their use of technology, both as weapons used against the innocent and as ways for victims to escape their tormentors, usually with a clock ticking ominously in the background. In Promise Me, Coben skillfully grafts this deadline suspense onto the career of his series hero, Bolitar. As in his stand-alones, the novel starts with a purely domestic situation–at a party in his home, attended by friends and their offspring, Bolitar overhears two teen girls talking about driving home drunk from parties. Stung by his own memory of a high-school friend who died in a car crash, Bolitar makes the girls promise to contact him if they ever need a lift or are in trouble. The call does come a few nights later. Myron drives the caller to a friend’s house, but she ends up disappearing, and guilt-ridden Myron must use all his resources to try to find what happened. Coben’s resurrection of Bolitar works superbly: the melding of high suspense and high technology with a somewhat battered, very canny, questing hero is sure to produce another major hit for the way-hot Coben. Description:

Synopsis:
Theirs was a marriage made in tabloid heaven, but no sooner had supermodel Laura Ayars and Celtics star David Baskin said “I do” than tragedy struck. While honeymooning on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, David went out for a swim – and never returned.
Now widowed and grieving, Laura has a thousand questions and no answers. Her search for the truth will draw her into a web of lies and deception that stretches back thirty years – while on the court at the Boston Garden, a rookie phenom makes his spectacular debut….
“The modern master of the hook-and-twist.” – Dan Brown, Author of The Da Vinci Code

Publishers Weekly:
Terrible secrets lead basketball star David Baskin to fake his death while honeymooning in the tropics in this manipulative but otherwise engaging first novel. His bereaved bride, supermodel Laura Ayars, not sure that David’s drowning was accidental, starts sleuthing–which proves dangerous when somebody begins killing people who may have the answers she wants. Meanwhile, David, fitted out with a new identity and appearance, tries out for his original team, the Boston Celtics, and “replaces” himself at his former position. Why he has faked his death is explained in the story’s penultimate surprise. But why he risks playing in front of fans who know his style is never addressed. Crucial coincidences abound, such as the love affair of David’s brother and Laura’s sister–adults who, as kids 30 years before, just happen to have witnessed their parents’ worst sins. Coben manufactures tension primarily by keeping key details out of his narrative, a method that eventually wears thin. The resolution comes as a relief, with less of a bang than its buildup promises. (May)
Biography:
In his mysteries — many of which star sports agent Myron Bolitar — Harlan Coben leavens the intrigue with a surprise ingredient: humor. The result: books as fun to read as they are to solve, with distinct and colorful characters the reader is always happy to visit with, again and again.

From the Paperback edition.

Amazon.com Review
As readers who have enjoyed his appearances in original paperbacks already know, Harlan Coben’s former professional basketball star Myron Bolitar is not your everyday testosterone-enriched jock. Myron is a mild-mannered guy who drinks chocolate soda and until very recently lived at home with his parents in suburban New Jersey. In his hardcover debut, we find Myron sharing a New York apartment with his longtime lady friend, writer Jessica Culver, and still running MB SportsReps, where he ostensibly manages the careers of other athletes, but really spends most of his time playing private eye. The arrival in Myron’s life of rising pro basketball star Brenda Slaughter seriously tests his commitment to Jessica, who is in Hollywood working on a movie. It seems that Brenda’s father Horace–Myron’s old coach–has disappeared, and Brenda is receiving death threats that might involve a gangster family’s plans for a new female professional basketball league. Or the threats might have something to do with Brenda’s mother’s connection to a wealthy New Jersey political family. Myron and his banker friend Win, a preppy with a penchant for violence, are more than enough to double-team the bad guys. Previous Myron Bolitar games in paperback include Backspin, Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, and Fade Away.

From Library Journal
Series sports agent Myron Bolitar handles everything with panache: his relationships, his clients, and this search for two missing people. When a sports store mogul asks him to "watch over" basketball star Brenda Slaughter, Myron winds up looking for her father, who disappeared a week ago, and her mother, who deserted the family some 20 years earlier. Myron not only discovers mob interest in female basketball but also a connected suspicious death in a high-profile political family. Standard plotting, then, but authentic conversation, colorful characters, and exciting New York and New Jersey surrounds more than compensate. Strongly recommended.

Description:

The "nimble and ingenious" (New York Times) thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author-now in paperback!

Shot twice by an unseen assailant, Dr. Marc Seidman lies in a hospital bed. His wife has been killed. His six-month-old daughter, Tara, has vanished. But then a ransom note arrives, giving him one chance to save her.

Forbidden to talk to the police or the FBI, Marc is helpless as the authorities hone in on a new suspect: him. And he doesn’t know who to trust as deadly secrets-about his wife, about an old love he’s never forgotten, and about his own past-surface. Torn between agony and hope, Mark finds himself clinging to one, unwavering vow: to bring Tara home at any cost.

From Publishers Weekly
Supercharged by a father’s fierce drive to rescue his kidnapped daughter, Coben’s third stand-alone thriller proves far more gripping than his second, Tell No One. Marc Seidman, a plastic surgeon near New York City, wakes up in a hospital to learn that he has been gravely wounded, his wife shot dead and his infant daughter, Tara, snatched. The ensuing narrative, which shuttles between third person and Marc’s first person, covers more than a year in Marc’s hunt for Tara and climaxes twice with his fumbling of payments in response to ransom demands, plunging him into despair. A smartly drawn supporting cast supports Marc in his quest, including an old girlfriend-an ex-FBI agent-who reappears in his life; Marc’s lawyer, who’s also his best friend; a cop/FBI duo who for a while suspect Marc of engineering the snatch and ransom demands; and a working-class hero who joins forces with Marc near the end of his hunt and steals every scene he’s in. On the villain’s side lurk several shady folk, including a psychopathic former child star and her hulking boyfriend. The plot is overly complicated, and there’s a revelation at book’s end that veteran thriller readers will have sussed out long before. Those flaws matter little, though, in the face of the emotional onslaught of Marc’s gut-wrenching, self-questioning, relentless narration, which will carry readers like a tidal wave through the novel’s twists and turns. What Coben’s thriller lacks in originality, it makes up for in sheer vigor; few browsers or dippers will put this down.

From Booklist
Starred Review Very few writers can induce in their readers the kind of trancelike state, punctuated by frequent "wows," that most of us associate with much-loved books from childhood. Coben can. Although he has had a fairly short mystery-writing career (this is his fourth novel), Coben has already won a great deal of acclaim. He is the only writer to have won all three of the genre’s most competitive awards: the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Shamus. His current thriller is as pleasantly painful to read as its predecessors. Coben starts with an excruciating premise: What would you do if your infant were kidnapped? His hero, a plastic surgeon specializing in pediatric reconstructions, has no known enemies. But he wakes up 12 days after having been shot in his own home to discover that his wife has died, his six-month-old daughter has been taken, and he himself is a suspect. When the kidnappers make contact, promising that there will be "no second chance" if the cops or feds are brought into the case, Coben’s hero is thrown into an agony of hope and indecision. The novel, spanning 18 months and jumping between the father and the kidnappers, sets off depth charges of meets, double-crosses, near-misses, and vengeful acts. Coben holds it together with his hero’s determination and smarts. This is the kind of book that will leave readers dazed–but only after they finally look up from the final page. Connie Fletcher

Description:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past…and the lies that bind us together.

It’s a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart-and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.
Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.
As the body count mounts and Kat’s hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved-her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

A Harlan Coben Classic-Now Back in Print!

In a clinic on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, a doctor has dedicated his life to eradicating a devastating disease. One by one, his patients are getting well. And one by one, they’re being targeted by a serial killer.

There’s only one cure, but many ways to die…

From Publishers Weekly
Coben ( Play Dead ) adroitly applies the fundamental rules of thrillerdom (offer a raft of potential villains; keep the action moving at breakneck speed) in this highly entertaining novel about a conspiracy apparently designed to prevent the development of a cure for AIDS. When one of a trio of research scientists on the brink of coming up with an AIDS antidote dies, it looks like suicide, but TV journalist Sara Lowell and her husband, NBA star Michael Silverman, who are friends of the clinic’s founder, think otherwise. Their suspicions are confirmed when several clinic patients, including the son of a U.S. senator, are murdered. A televangelist with his own agenda, Sara’s prominent physician father, and a high-ranking government official all seem intent upon derailing the AIDS research, a situation that becomes most personal when Michael is diagnosed with the disease. Police lieutenant "Twitch" Bernstein, a closet homosexual, ultimately comes face-to-face with the person responsible for the killings. The final revelation of the identity of the master conspirator comes as a real surprise. This page-turner also raises some interesting questions about medical research and its funding.

From School Library Journal
YA– Coben casts a dynamic, beautiful, and successful woman, Sara Lowell, and her handsome and famous sports figure, Michael Silverman, as his main characters. Their friend, Dr. Harvey Riker, takes them into his confidence when he tells them that his medical clinic has discovered a cure for AIDS. To his horror, his cured patients are being murdered by a serial killer dubbed the Gay Slasher by the media. Sara’s father is in stiff competition with Riker for funding of his cancer clinic and her sister, Cassandra, is romantically involved with the doctor. When Michael collapses on the basketball court and is diagnosed as HIV positive, tracking down the murderer and supporting Riker’s clinic take on new dimensions for Sara. This is a fast moving mystery that’s sure to capture YAs’ attention, especially in light of today’s headlines.

Description:

When Myron Bolitar gets involved in the family drama of his former tennis star client and her rock star husband, he discovers secrets about his own family, specifically his brother, who abandoned the Bolitars long ago. As Myron races to locate his missing brother while their father clings to life, he must face the lies that led to their estrangement-including the ones told by Myron himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Edgar-winner Coben’s 10th Myron Bolitar novel (after Long Lost) is a perfect 10: providing readers with new information about the past of the former athlete turned agent and owner of MB Reps; a satisfyingly complex mystery; and the always entertaining, sometimes shocking exploits of Bolitar’s partner and friend, Windsor Horne Lockwood III (aka Win). Suzze Tervantino, a former tennis prodigy and one of Bolitar’s first clients, visits his New York office and shows him a Facebook posting that suggests that her husband, rock star Lex Ryder, isn’t the father of the child she’s carrying. When Ryder, also a client of MB Reps, disappears, Suzze begs Bolitar to find him. In the process, Bolitar catches a glimpse of his sister-in-law, Kitty, at a crowded nightclub, and begins a search for her and his estranged younger brother, Brad, whom he hasn’t seen for 16 years. This explosively fast thriller will leave fans clamoring for more. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Coben, who has perfected the techno-thriller, in which social media tools are used in ingeniously devious ways (Hold Tight, 2008), has won the trifecta of mystery awards: the Edgar, the Shamus, and the Anthony’and is the only writer to have such a clutch at his command. Here, he returns to his humble roots and resurrects his sports agent and sleuth Myron Bolitar, who appeared in Coben’s debut, Deal Breaker, in 1995, and has starred in nine other novels. Coben may be a little too fond of Bolitar; over the years, he has transformed him from a struggling New Jersey sports agent to a wildly successful superagent who handles all forms of entertainment and, bad news for the reader, is now given to self-indulgent introspection, rumination, and endless dialogue with his sidekick, Win. This overwriting changes the Bolitar novel from spare and lively to a flabby 350-plus pager. A prime example of this work’s need for a less-indulgent author (or editor) is the cringe-inducing scene in which Win appears with two Asian beauties, named Mee and Yu. Bolitar and Win carry on with sophomoric puns and a forecast of sexual activity that is supposed to be hilarious but reads as incredibly insensitive. The plot is fairly standard, involving a client whose husband disappears, with a link to Bolitar’s sister-in-law and estranged brother. Bracing action, a Coben staple, is bogged down by bloated writing. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Coben takes a literary misstep with his return to series character Myron Bolitar, but his name-brand status ensures an audience. –Connie Fletcher

A New York Times Bestselling Author
A Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, Doubleday Book Club, Literary Guild, and Mystery Guild

When Grace Lawson picks up a newly developed set of family photographs, there is a picture that doesn’t belong. At least twenty years old, the photo shows four strangers with her husband, Jack. Although he denies it, Jack disappears that night, taking the photograph with him. In the days that follow, Grace struggles with doubts and unanswered questions, and realizes that others are looking for Jack – including one fierce, silent killer.

From Publishers Weekly
Coben’s latest thriller (after No Second Chance) is a riveting, albeit perplexing, nightmare that finds hapless New Jersey wife and mother Grace Lawson dealing with an assortment of fearful developments, including a missing spouse, a terrifyingly adaptable hit man, deceitful friends, hidden agendas and ghosts from the past. Reader MacDuffie wisely takes her cues from Coben’s prose. When he describes a policeman as "patronizing," she lends just the right vocal inflection to his lines, then quickly switches to the sarcastic tones of feisty Grace. And for the novel’s most ingratiating character, Charlene Swain, MacDuffie’s voice subtly shifts from vague to vital as the Percodan-popping, bored-to-tears housewife rises above her ennui to give Grace a helping hand in combating the wicked hit man Wu. Coben fills his thriller with unoriginal characters (including a murderer on death row, a rock-and-roller in comeback mode and a gentrified mobster with revenge on his mind), but MacDuffie’s skillful interpretation brings the characters and action into sharp focus.

From Booklist
If the trick of suspense writing is to get readers to identify so passionately with the beleaguered principal character that they disappear into the story, feeling the knife points of tension themselves, then Coben is the Houdini of the form. Coben, who has won the Trifecta of mystery writing–the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Shamus Awards–likes to burst the bubble of suburban security by having his characters’ well-ordered, happy lives upended in ways that mirror readers’ fears. In his four stand-alone thrillers, the past comes back to bite or haunt the protagonist, or the present vanishes in one fatal moment. In this latest excursion into the dark, a suburban mother finds one picture that does not belong in the pack of family outing photos she’s just picked up. The picture, showing a group of college students, seems as if it was taken 20 years ago. One of the group looks like her husband. A girl in the group has an X drawn across her face. When Mrs. Happily Married shows the picture to her husband, he seems shaken, then leaves home. Coben ratchets up the suspense of the wife trying to find her husband with another drama, that of a serial killer in the neighborhood. A tragic accident from the woman’s past intersects with her husband’s secrets and the movements of the killer in ways that are satisfyingly creepy. Connie Fletcher

Description:

You never meant to kill him….
One night, Matt Hunter innocently tried to break up a fight-and ended up a killer. Now, nine years later, he’s an ex-con who takes nothing for granted. His wife, Olivia, is pregnant, and the two of them are closing on their dream house. But all it will take is one shocking, inexplicable call from Olivia’s phone to shatter Matt’s life a second time….
An electrifying thrill ride of a novel that peeks behind the white picket fences of suburbia, The Innocent is at once a twisting, turning, emotionally charged story and a compelling tale of the choices we make and the repercussions that never leave.

Amazon.com Review
Matt Hunter made a mistake when he was 20 years old and paid for it with a four-year stint in prison that left him with a determination never to be locked up again. Finally, his life is back on the promising track he was taking before he accidentally killed a man: He has a good job, a newly pregnant wife he adores, and is about to close on the home of their dreams. Then he gets a couple of bizarre photos on his cell phone that seem to show his wife in a compromising position with a black-haired stranger. But before he can sort out who sent the anonymous pictures and why, he’s running from the law–especially from the cop who was his best friend in grade school, and a sharp young detective who’s stepped right into the middle of an FBI investigation spurred by the discovery that a dead nun who wasn’t who she claimed to be is somehow mixed up in Matt and Olivia Hunter’s life. Coben deftly wields a complicated plot involving a missing stripper, a dead gangster, an incriminating videotape, and a couple of agents who aren’t quite who they seem to be, while Hunter manages to hold onto his faith in Olivia despite her clouded past and uncertain future. Like all Coben’s protagonists, (including the hero of his popular series starring sports agent turned detective Myron Bolitar) Hunter is a nice, middle-class New Jersey boy who’s still the innocent of the title, despite the miscarriage of justice that sent him to prison. Or was it? That’s the moral question at the heart of this tightly constructed thriller, which will no doubt shoot directly to the top of the bestseller list, and deservedly so. –Jane Adams

A Bit of Bolitar: An Exclusive Essay by Harlan Coben

Beloved series character Myron Bolitar appears in a new short story included with Harlan Coben’s latest thriller, The Innocent. In this Amazon.com exclusive essay, Coben shares his thoughts on Bolitar’s return.

From Publishers Weekly
Once listeners get past an awkward prologue told in second person, present tense ("Your name is Matt Hunter. You are 20 years old…"), this twisty thriller reverts to the more familiar objective point of view, and the combination of Coben’s yarn spinning and Brick’s crisp, thoughtful narration mesmerizes. Listeners are drawn into the nightmare world of Matt Hunter who, in that off-putting prologue, is attacked by a gang of drunken frat boys, accidentally kills one of them, is found guilty of murder, serves four years of hard time, picks up the pieces of his life, marries a loving woman and is on the cusp of fatherhood when he receives an ominous phone call. And that’s just for openers. A master manipulator, Coben keeps the story in constant motion, shifting from Hunter’s travails to those of homicide detective Loren Muse, a lapsed Catholic who’s investigating the murder of a nun with breast implants. The pace is fast and furious as Hunter and Muse race along their collision course, but Brick’s cool, calculated delivery helps listeners hang on through the hairpin turns. From an African-American hooker and an aging mother superior to a hard-boiled ex-con and a sexy private eye, Brick conjures a proper vocal match for every character. Indeed, the combined efforts of author and narrator make for such an electrifying listen that an epilogue reverting to that second-person point of view barely dilutes this overall satisfying experience. Simultaneous release with the Dutton hardcover (Reviews, Mar. 7).
