To również opowieść o państwie w państwie, które rządziło się według własnych reguł i praw, które miało własny język, literaturę, orkiestry, teatry i własną niemoralną moralność.

Anne Applebaum otwiera przed czytelnikami wszystkie, najbardziej nawet ukryte obszary funkcjonowania Gułagu i życia jego katów i ofiar. Opowiada zarówno o brawurowych ucieczkach i buntach, jaki o niewyobrażalnych karach, jakie spotkały ich uczestników. Oprowadza po świecie, który nigdy nie powinien istnieć, a przecież stał się nieludzkim domem dla niemal 30 milionów ludzi.
