Description:

Ludzie tłumaczą to trzęsieniem ziemi, wybuchem wulkanu, ogromną powodzią albo wszystkim naraz.

Ava Farris – siedemnastoletnia uczennica drugiej klasy liceum, mieszka w kilkunastotysięcznym miasteczku Carlton. Przybywając do Carlton, rodzina Farrisów błyskawicznie zyskuje szacunek i uznanie.

Description:

Taking readers on a breathtaking visual and scientific adventure, renowned physicist Brian Cox reveals the Solar System as you have never seen it before: from Saturn’s moons, where giant ice fountains spout into space and oceans are made of liquid methane, to Jupiter, where storms rage that are twice the size of Earth and giant super-volcanoes dominate its tortured moon of Io.

Professor Cox takes you on a journey of discovery where alien worlds become places you can see and explore. He introduces you to the planets and moons beyond our world, finding the biggest and most bizarre and powerful natural phenomena. He visits some of the most spectacular and extreme locations here on Earth to unveil what our planet can reveal about the wonders of the Solar System.

Employing his trademark authoritative yet down-to-earth approach, Brian explores how these previously unseen phenomena have dramatically expanded our horizons with new discoveries about the planets, their moons, and how they came to be the way they are.

Includes 500 diagrams and full-color photographs

Description:

"Science" and "Religion" have been two major elements in the building of modern nation-states. While contemporary historiography of science has studied the interactions between nation building and the construction of modern scientific and technological institutions, "science-and-religion" is still largely based on a supposed universal historiography in which global notions of "science" and of "religion" are seldom challenged.
This book explores the interface between science, religion and nationalism at a local level, paying attention to the roles religious institutions, specific confessional traditions, or an undefined notion of "religion" played in the construction of modern science in national contexts: the use of anti-clerical rhetoric as scapegoat for a perceived scientific and technological backwardness; the part of religious tropes in the emergence of a sense of belonging in new states; the creation of "invented traditions" that included religious and scientific myths so as to promote new identities; the struggles among different confessional traditions in their claims to pre-eminence within a specific nation-state, etc.
Moreover, the chapters in this book illuminate the processes by which religious myths and institutions were largely substituted by stories of progress in science and technology which often contributed to nationalistic ideologies.

Description:

The Science Dog (aka Linda Case) takes a skeptic’s look at many commonly held beliefs about dog behavior and training. Each of the book’s 32 essays explores a question posed by leading researchers and provides detailed and thought-provoking analysis of their findings. Learn how dogs react to different training methods, discover the pitfalls associated with the use of extinction, and read about new studies that evaluate programs that communities use to keep children safe from dog bites. Other essays explore owners’ ability to understand their dog’s emotions, how people perceive and train small dogs, and if standard behavior tests used by animal shelters to assess dogs’ adoptability hold up under scrutiny. Whether you are a professional trainer, work with dogs in shelters or rescue groups, own a dog-related business or train your dog for fun, the information provided in "Beware the Straw Man" will be of interest and of value to you. Be forewarned though; this book does not provide the reader with pat answers. Rather it presents the current state of the science of dog training and encourages you to decide for yourself how to proceed.
