Description:

Three experts on stroke recovery share their knowledge and advice for stroke survivors and their families.

Dealing with the onslaught of information about stroke can be confusing and overwhelming. And if you happen to be a stroke survivor with newly impaired language skills, it can be especially hard to comprehend everything your doctors, nurses, and specialists are telling you.

This book consists of the top 100 questions that survivors and their families ask, with answers from the top physicians and therapists in the country.

The questions start out basic but then get more specific to address different areas of recovery. And, for stroke survivors still struggling with reading comprehension, or for family members who are simply too tired to read long passages, there are Takeaway Points at the end of each chapter to help simplify everything.

Includes answers to frequently asked questions such as:

· What is a stroke, and who is at risk for one?
· What is the best diet for a stroke survivor?
· How does group therapy compare to individual therapy?
· What should a stroke survivor look for in a therapist?
· How long will it take to recover, and how can stroke survivors maximize their recovery?
· What can someone do to prevent having another stroke?

In this book, you’ll gain a wealth of information, inspiration, advice, and support as you navigate your journey through stroke recovery.

Description:

This brand-new series highlights some of the major contributions women have made in the world of science. Women have historically been associated with caring for the sick, but their role in health sciences goes far beyond their traditional role. Women played a leading role in placing hygiene and nursing on a scientific footing. They have also advanced surgical techniques, developed cures for killer diseases, learned about human anatomy, and figured out the chemistry behind some of the biochemicals on which humans depend for their health. This book tells their stories and describes their vital contributions.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
From studying the stars to curing disease, understanding plants and animals, pioneering computer studies, and unraveling the secrets of atoms and molecules, women have played a vital role in scientific advances since the ancient world. Yet their contributions have often gone unrecognized or, worse, have been credited to others. With lively text, photography, and art, Super SHEroes of Science sets out to redress the balance and give credit where it’s due. It examines the contributions to various fields of science of individual women from around the world!

Description:

The great fire attacks on the cities of Germany and Japan were scientifically planned with emphasis placed on the susceptibility of the target and the type and quantity of munitions necessary to produce maximum damage. The lessons learned from these attacks and later from the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki should provide valuable guidance to planners in designing measures to minimize the effects of fire damage to American cities in any future war.Complete appraisal of the fire damage in German cities may never be made. The best figures for total damage due to high-explosive and incendiary bombs were compiled from aerial surveys made by the British Air Ministry. Although admittedly incomplete, records of the principal attacks on most cities were included. Of the 49 cities studied, 39 percent of the individual dwelling units (2,164,800 out of a total of 5,554,500) were seriously damaged. Both high-explosive and incendiary bombs were used in the great attacks on German targets by the U. S. Army Air Force and the Royal Air Force. The high-explosive bombs varied in size from 100 to 2,000 pounds (with heavier bombs for special targets). The incendiary bombs varied from 4 to 100 pounds (with some 500-pound bombs used on industrial installations) and were of two general types, namely: (1) Those in which the container was combustible and served as incendiary material, and (2) those in which the case was merely a container capable of placing the incendiary filling at the desired place in the target. In the principal city attacks the total load of bombs dropped consisted of an approximately equal weight of high explosives and incendiaries. High-explosive bombs deterred firefighting, disrupted communications, broke water-main networks, created road blocks, opened up buildings, broke windows, and displaced roofing. In some places they caused fires, but this was a secondary and relatively minor factor. The incendiaries started most of the fires.Bomb loads of 1,000 to 2,000 tons were dispatched over German cities in one night. A total of over 7,000 tons was dropped on Hamburg, and an even heavier bomb load was dropped on Dresden in the closing days of the war. In contrast, the heaviest single attack on an English city was 457 tons of incendiary and high-explosive bombs dropped on London on the night of April 16-17, 1941. These figures show that the German attacks on England were relatively light despite the great damage they caused.Contents: Section I * Fire Warfare in World War II * Fire Warfare on German Cities * The Pattern of German Cities * Characteristics of Fire Storms * Fire Spread * Fire Defense Operations * Casualties * Fire Warfare on Japanese Cities * The Pattern of Japanese Cities * Characteristics of Conflagrations * Fire Spread * Firebreaks * Fire Defense Operations * Casualties * Fire from the Atomic Bomb Attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan * The Pattern of the Cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki * Fires Caused by the Atomic Bomb * Fire Defense Operations * Casualties * Section II * Principal Factors Involved in the Fire Susceptibility of American Cities * Factors Having the Greatest Influence on Fire Initiation and Fire Spread * 1. Description:

Professionally converted for accurate e-book format reproduction, this important U.S. Army field manual serves as a guide for the noncommissioned officer (NCO). Noncommissioned officers are the backbone of The Army and the reason our Army is the best trained. most professional. and most respected in the world. First-line supervisors execute day-to-day operations with precision whenever and wherever duty calls. NCOs provide the leadership required to fulfill our nonnegotiable contract with the American people – to fight and win our Nation’s wars, decisively. Living, implementing and teaching the NCO Creed in your duties will further instill and develop those critical leadership skills that our Army and our Nation require and deserve as we train Soldiers and grow leaders.
Train hard and to standard to improve readiness – the cost of not being ready is paid in Soldier’s lives, and that cost is too high to pay. As a noncommissioned officer it is your job to train and lead Soldiers to accomplish the unit’s mission. NCOs make it happen – they inspire Soldiers to work toward common goals, lead from the front and provide an example of what right looks like. They do not walk by deficiencies either in training or in individual departures from Army Values – NCOs are the front line in enforcing and reinforcing our institutional values. NCOs must treat every training event as though it were the last before a deployment to combat in order to achieve excellence in warfighting.
This Noncommissioned Officer Guide applies to all NCOs in The Army – Active, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. Standards are the foundation in this manual, which include Army Values and your duties and responsibilities to the Army. Additions to this guide include NCO History; Duties. Responsibilities and Authority; Training; and Counseling and Mentorship.
Read this manual thoroughly. It will assist you in your growth as a leader of Soldiers. Professional NCOs know their jobs, care for their Soldiers and take the time to develop their junior officers. Your charge, as America’s finest, is to do what is right each and every day for your unit, the organization. the NCO Corps and the United States Army.

Description:

Essential Reading for Every Parent
In the early 1990s, tens of thousands of children with severe peanut and food allergies arrived for kindergarten at schools in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.
The phenomenon of a life-threatening allergy in kids in only these countries occurred simultaneously, without warning, and it quickly intensified. The number of peanut allergic children in the United States alone went from virtually none to about two million in just twenty years. As these children have aged, the combined number of American adults and children allergic to peanuts has grown to a total of four million.
How and why has this epidemic occurred? In The Peanut Allergy Epidemic, Heather Fraser explains:
Precisely when the peanut allergy epidemic began
How a child-specific allergy epidemic happened before, at the close of the nineteenth century
That in the early twentieth century doctors including the 1913 Nobel Prize in medicine winner identified vaccination as the cause of the first pediatric allergy epidemic impacting 50 percent of children
That more than one hundred years of medical literature describes how vaccination creates allergy to what is in the shot, air, or body at the time of injection
How changes in US vaccination legislation sparked the allergy epidemic in children
Fraser also highlights alternative medicines and explores issues of vaccine safety and other food allergies, making this fully updated second edition a must-read for every parent, teacher, and health professional.
