Description:

The primary focus of this contributed volume is on providing cutting-edge developments in a number of critically important fields, including energy, combustion, power, propulsion, environment using fossil fuels, and the production and use of biofuels. The availability of clean and sustainable energy is more crucial now than ever before for all areas of energy use in power, mobility, and propulsion. In the future, the energy used will only grow due to the increase in population and enhanced standards of living. This book includes contributions from globally recognized specialists from various regions of the world. They have provided the most recent advances in both basic and applied research on the creation of cleaner energy and its application for a variety of technologies, from microscale energy conversion to supersonic and hypersonic propulsion powered by hydrocarbon fuels. Clean and efficient energy conversion for various stationary and propulsion applications, including hypersonic propulsion, thermal management, emission control, and environmental issues for energy sustainability, are amongst the challenges and opportunities followed for the specific applications. In parallel, some of the other applications include the combustion of fossil and biofuels, clean energy production from low-grade materials such as waste and biomass, and alternative fuels via rigorous modeling and simulation, with a focus on efficiency and environmental issues. The present and future R&D activities include specially designed technical tracks and contributions from internationally recognized technical experts that reveal different but complementary viewpoints on fuels, combustion, power and propulsion, and air toxins. The development and implementation of novel energy conversion technologies require solid fundamental understanding, as well as research and development efforts at different scales, from bench to pilot to full scale. We conjecture that for the foreseeable future, hydrocarbon fuels will likely remain a major source of energy in all sectors of power, transportation, and propulsion, with a slow but steady increase in renewable energy resources in the overall energy mix. A multifaceted strategy is needed for the energy and environmental sustainability of all power and propulsion systems. This includes creating and utilizing alternative and renewable fuels, designing flexible fuel combustion systems that are simple to use with the new fuels, and developing cutting-edge, eco-friendly technologies to maximize the use of all types of gas, liquid, and solid fuels.
This book provides a wealth of knowledge as a reference for practicing engineers, research engineers, researchers and managers in labs and industry, academic institutions, graduate students, and senior-year undergraduates studying mechanical, chemical, aerospace, energy, and environmental and industrial engineering.

Description:

Second edition of the best-selling Practical SQL. An approachable guide to programming in SQL (Structured Query
Language) that will teach even beginning programmers how to build powerful databases and analyze data to find meaningful information.

Practical SQL is an approachable and fast-paced guide to SQL (Structured Query Language) written by longtime professional journalist Anthony DeBarros. SQL is the primary tool that programmers, web developers, researchers, journalists, and others use to explore data in a database. DeBarros focuses on using SQL to find the story in data, with the aid of the popular open-source database PostgreSQL and the pgAdmin interface.

This thoroughly
revised second edition includes a new chapter describing how to set up PostgreSQL and more extensive discussion of pgAdmin’s best features. The author has also added a chapter on the JSON data format that shows readers how to store and query JSON data. DeBarros has also updated the data in the book throughout, added coverage of additional topics, and perfected the book’s examples.

Readers love DeBarros’s use of exercises and real-world examples that demonstrate how to:

– Create databases and related tables using your own data
– Correctly define data typesAggregate, sort, and filter data to find patterns
– Clean their data and transfer data as text files
– Create advanced queries and automate tasks

This book uses PostgreSQL, but the SQL syntax is applicable to many database applications, including Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL.

Description:

A fascinating look into how the transformative joys of mathematical experience are available to everyone, not just specialists

Math has a reputation for being inaccessible. People think that it requires a special gift or that comprehension is a matter of genes. Yet the greatest mathematicians throughout history, from René Descartes to Alexander Grothendieck, have insisted that this is not the case. Like Albert Einstein, who famously claimed to have “no special talent,” they said that they had accomplished what they did using ordinary human doubts, weaknesses, curiosity, and imagination.

David Bessis guides us on an illuminating path toward deeper mathematical comprehension, reconnecting us with the mental plasticity we experienced as children. With simple, concrete examples, Bessis shows how mathematical comprehension is integral to the great learning milestones of life, such as learning to see, to speak, to walk, and to eat with a spoon.

Focusing on the deeply human roots of mathematics, Bessis dispels the myths of mathematical genius. He offers an engaging initiation into the experience of math not as a series of discouragingly incomprehensible logic problems but as a physical activity akin to yoga, meditation, or a martial art. This perspective will change the way you think not only about math but also about intelligence, intuition, and everything that goes on inside your head.
