Description:

The need to learn the skills necessary to drive a steam locomotive safely and efficiently did not disappear with the end of the Steam Age on Britain’s railways. Indeed, such knowledge is vital to the future survival of the many successful heritage lines in operation today, many of which offer footplate courses to would-be drivers, a testimony of the enduring appeal of working with steam.

First published in 1998, this is a reprint of an indispensable guide for footplatemen and aspiring heritage railway volunteers. Packed with diagrams and detailed text, every aspect of working with steam locomotives and their equipment is covered. In this comprehensive practical manual, former BR steam engineman Brian Topping conducts us along the traditional learning path from cleaner to fireman to driver, reminding us that for all the glamour of the footplate, there is also a great deal of dirty and strenuous work involved.

With nearly 300 illustrations, including more than 70 diagrams, this is very much a ‘hands-on’ guide to all aspects of the various types of steam locomotive likely to be encountered on today’s heritage railways. It covers not only the mechanical anatomy of the locomotive, but also such matters as maintenance, lubrication, braking systems, valve gear, firing techniques, footplate controls, basic railway signalling, and much more. It concludes with descriptions of typical journeys from both the fireman and driver’s points of view.

Whether you are an established driver wishing to brush up on your locomotive knowledge, an armchair enthusiast, or a would-be volunteer keen to get your hands dirty, this is the indispensable aid to safe and successful steam locomotive driving and management.

On January 24, 2013, restrictions against women in ground combat units, to include U.S. Army Special Forces (SF), were rescinded by the Department of Defense. The military services were allowed to gradually and systematically integrate women into male-only military occupational specialties (MOS). By January 2016 the military services must open all combat jobs to women or explain why exceptions exist. Gender integration for Army SF Operational Detachments Alpha (ODAs) could present socio-dynamic hurdles that potentially erode operational readiness, combat effectiveness and group cohesion. This research explores implications to operational readiness, combat effectiveness and group cohesion gender integration may pose to Army SF ODAs. Historical accounts of women in the Office of Strategic Services are considered, and gender integration of combat jobs and special operations forces of foreign militaries are discussed. Surveys were conducted among a convenience sampling of U.S. Army SF officers and U.S. Army female officers. Findings and recommendations conclude gender integration of an SF ODA can be successful if leadership at all levels leads the way with clear communication to manage expectations, and current physical standards remain unaltered. Clear lines of communication and education of ODA spouses are also vital to the success of gender integration in ODAs.
Integrating women into ground combat units and previously denied MOSs is a sensitive subject, and more so when you consider integrating women into the Special Forces community as an 18-Series MOS member on an ODA. A strong understanding of the socio-dynamics within the integrated group is required. This study explores some pitfalls and benefits of gender integration and plausible foundational frameworks in which USSOCOM/USASOC could begin to build successful full integration models. The literature review will consider historical perspectives of women in the OSS, particularly where women were integrated into roles that were previously held by an all-male force. It will include any previous research that could be considered parallel to this study. Also, previous research on the psychological sex differences between men and women when they are integrated together into small working groups will be considered. Chapter 3 will explain and discuss the methodology incorporated into the research. A qualitative descriptive survey methodology will be utilized. Surveys will be administered to a designated sample of human subjects. A quantitative analysis will be conducted where applicable, but a large portion of the data received from the surveys will be qualitative in nature. Chapter 4 will be a discussion of the survey results. The final chapter will include an analysis of the survey results, findings and recommendations, and recommendations for further research.

More than 250 classic American locomotives.
"Let the country but make the railroads, and the railroads will make the country." – Edward Pease
During the mid-1800s, American railroads became the lifeblood of new communities in the West and brought new ways of life and means of commerce to rural communities. Railroads became the shining thread that tied together the tapestry of American life into a land of plenty. The Illustrated Dictionary of North American Locomotives explores the story of railroads and their motive power. Giant beasts of iron and steel once roamed the land. Their descendants still race across the country.
This book charts the progress of motive power on America’s railroads from 1830 until the present. Its 432 pages illustrate a wide variety of grand and humble locomotives from the steam powered Puffing Billy types of the "Early Days" chapter, to the mighty Allegheny class steamers that were used to haul coal for the American industry in the "Steam in Charge" chapter. Technical specifications are given for each engine type and the book is fully illustrated with both black & white and color photos. The book goes on to show the progress of Diesel Power, including the output of General Electric and General Motors electromotive division (EMD) from the 1920s to the present. Ultimately, the book also explores the Electric Power that powers so many of today’s railways.

Description:

Inspired from assorted first-hand accounts, this fictional story of World War I is an anthropomorphic retelling of that global conflict and the soldiers who experienced the horrors of the front lines and high seas. While horse drawn carts and trains were ordinary sights, automobiles, tanks, submarines, and airplanes made their wartime debuts alongside machine guns, poison gas, and flame throwers. While the nightmares of World War I and the aftermath are sometimes forgotten, this book asks the reader to look again and remember the dead, and to weigh their number against those who would choose war. Conceived as a long, continuous camera pan through the trenches and beyond, the reader is soon buried in mud, corpses, and ruin, emerging on the other side with blurred recollections of lost comrades and a nagging sense of pointless destruction. Ian Densford’s graphic watercolors paired with a spattering of onomatopoeic utterings create an unforgiving tale of the "war to end all wars."

Immanuel Kant was a great philosopher and one of the founders of the modern system of philosophy. He is in the row with the greatest thinkers as Aristotle, Isaac Newton, John Locke, David Hume, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and John Stuart Mill. Their thoughts had strong influence on building the foundation of the United States and its endeavor of open society.

Kant published Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment in 1784 and the essay received a great reply of leading intellectuals of this time with essays. This is one of Kant’s most famous essays and has had the most impact on Enlightenment. Kant argued in the essay a lack of Enlightenment due not to their lack of intellect, but lack of courage. Kant further addressed the causes of a lack of enlightenment and gave the conditions to make it possible for people to enlighten themselves. He declared "For this Enlightenment nothing is required but freedom, namely the most harmless amongst all what may be called freedom, namely: to make use of one’s reason in all public use." This is still true today for people in many countries including China and Russia to gain the true freedom and complete enlightenment phase before they can be peacefully integrated into the global society and make a great contribution to the world development.

Kant’s work produced great influence on modern philosophy and logic. His view became widely recognised as the foremost philosophical voice and his influence has been felt in nearly every field of the humanities and social sciences.

This book is one of the most important ones about philosophy and Enlightenment by Immanuel Kant, one of the greatest thinkers of modern philosophy on the planet.

Author: Anthony Heywood
Language: polski
Year: 2016
Subjects: History, Technology, Nonfiction
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 9781138259294
Total pages: 48

Description:

This book is the first substantial study in any language of one of revolutionary Russia’s most distinguished and controversial engineers – Iurii Vladimirovich Lomonosov (1876-1952). Not only does it provide an outline of his remarkable life and career, it also explores the relationship between science, technology and transport that developed in late tsarist and early Soviet Russia. Lomonosov’s importance extends well beyond his scientific and engineering achievements thanks to the rich variety and public prominence of his professional and political activities. His generation – Lenin’s generation – was inevitably at the forefront of Russian life from the 1910s to the 1930s, and Lomonosov took his place there as one of the country’s best known and ultimately notorious engineers. As well as an innovative engineer who campaigned to enhance the role of science, he played a major role in shaping and administering the Russian railways, and undertook several diplomatic and scientific missions to the West during the early years of the Revolution. Falling from political favour during an assignment in Germany (1923-1927), he achieved notoriety in Russia as a ‘non-returner’ by apparently declining to return home. Thereby escaping probable arrest and execution, he began a new life abroad (1927-1952) which included a research post at the California Institute of Technology in 1929-1930, collaborative projects with the famous physicist P.L. Kapitsa in Cambridge, a long-time association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, and work for the British War Office during the Second World War. From Marxist revolutionary to American academic, this study reveals Lomonosov’s extraordinary life. Drawing on a wide variety of official Russian sources, as well as Lomonosov’s own diaries and memoirs, a vivid portrait of his life is presented, offering a better understanding of how science, technology and politics interacted in early-twentieth-century Russia.
