Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Waveland Pr Inc.
ISBN: 9780881339796

Description:

When published in Norway nearly thirty years ago, Ethnic Groups and Boundaries marked the transition to a new era of ethnic studies. Today this much-cited classic is regarded as the seminal volume from which stems much current anthropological thinking about ethnicity. Ethnic Groups and Boundaries opens with Barth’s invaluable thirty-page essay that introduces readers to important theoretical issues in the analysis of ethnic groups. Following is a collection of seven essays–the results of a symposium involving a small group of Scandinavian social anthropologists–intended to illustrate the application of Barth’s analytical viewpoints to different sides of the problems of polyethnic organization in various ethnographic areas, including Norway, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mexico, Afghanistan, and Laos.

Title: Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton: An Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in Vietnam
Author: Amy Shively Hawk
Language: angielski
Year: 2017
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Regnery Publishing
ISBN: 9781621575108
Total pages: 376

Description:

In 1967, U.S. Air Force fighter pilot James Shively was shot down over North Vietnam. After ejecting from his F-105 Thunderchief aircraft, he landed in a rice paddy and was captured by the North Vietnamese Army. For the next six years, Shively endured brutal treatment at the hands of the enemy in Hanoi prison camps. Back home his girlfriend moved on and married another man. Bound in iron stocks at the Hanoi Hilton, unable to get home to his loved ones, Shively contemplated suicide. Yet somehow he found hope and the will to survive–and he became determined to help his fellow POWs.

In a newspaper interview several years after his release, Shively said, "I had the opportunity to be captured, the opportunity to be interrogated, the opportunity to be tortured and the experience of answering questions under torture. It was an extremely humiliating experience. I felt sorry for myself. But I learned the hard way life isn’t fair. Life is only what you make of it."

Written by Shively’s stepdaughter Amy Hawk–whose mother Nancy ultimately reunited with and married Shively in a triumphant love story–and based on extensive audio recordings and Shively’s own journals, Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton is a haunting, riveting portrayal of life as an American prisoner of war trapped on the other side of the world.

Title: Handbook of hope. Theory, measures, and applications
Author: Charles Snyder
Language: angielski
Year: 2000
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Academic Press
ISBN: N/A
Total pages: 313

Description:

Hope has previously been a construct more of interest to philosophy and religion than to psychology. New research has shown, however, that hope is closely related to optimism, feelings of control, and motivation toward achieving one’s goals. The Handbook of Hope presents a comprehensive overview of the psychological inquiry into hope, including its measurement, development in children, how it’s loss is associated with specific clinical disorders, and therapeutic approaches that can help instill hope in those who have lost theirs. A final section discusses hope in occupational applications: how the use of hope can make one a better coach, teacher, or parent.
Key Features:
* Defines hope as a construct and describes development of hope through the lifespan
* Provides multiple instruments for measuring hope
* Guides professionals in how to assess hope levels and implement hope as part of therapy
* Relates hope to all portions of the population
* Includes case studies, figures, and tables to aid understanding of research findings and concepts
* Discusses the importance of hope to relationships, achieving goals, and success at work

Title: Elementy teorii operatorów na przestrzeni Hilberta
Author: Mikołaj Sołtan Piotr
Language: polski
Year: 2018
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego
ISBN: 9788323527992
Total pages: 377

Description:

Elements of the Theory of Operators on Hilbert Space

The book provides a concise and self-contained exposition of introductory topics in the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces. The topics covered include functional calculus and various versions of spectral theorems both for bounded and unbounded operators, compact operators, the trace and trace-class and Hilbert-Schmidt operators, selfadjoint extensions of symmetric operators and one-parameter groups of unitary operators.

The treatment of unbounded operators is largely based on a tool from theory of operator algebras, the so called z-transform. The transform makes it possible to encode complicated information about unbounded operators by bounded ones and thus avoid many intricacies of standard approach.

The book is intended for students of mathematics and physics as well as scientists working in those areas. Prerequisites include basic knowledge of analysis, algebra, measure theory as well as analytic functions and rudiments of functional analysis and Hilbert spaces.

Each chapter ends with a brief note indicating sources for examples, exercise problems and further developments of the theory.

Author: Charles C. Pinter
Language: angielski
Year: 2010
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Dover Publications
ISBN: N/A
Total pages: 227

Description:

Accessible but rigorous, this outstanding text encompasses all of the topics covered by a typical course in elementary abstract algebra. Its easy-to-read treatment offers an intuitive approach, featuring informal discussions followed by thematically arranged exercises. Intended for undergraduate courses in abstract algebra, it is suitable for junior- and senior-level math majors and future math teachers. This second edition features additional exercises to improve student familiarity with applications.
An introductory chapter traces concepts of abstract algebra from their historical roots. Succeeding chapters avoid the conventional format of definition-theorem-proof-corollary-example; instead, they take the form of a discussion with students, focusing on explanations and offering motivation. Each chapter rests upon a central theme, usually a specific application or use. The author provides elementary background as needed and discusses standard topics in their usual order. He introduces many advanced and peripheral subjects in the plentiful exercises, which are accompanied by ample instruction and commentary and offer a wide range of experiences to students at different levels of ability.

Description:

There was a time when great movement fell upon the earth and above it, when the destiny of men and gods was hammered out upon the forge of fate, when monstrous wars were brewed and mighty deeds were designed. Greatest of these heroes was a doom-driven adventurer who bore a runeblade that he loathed. His name was Elric of Melniboné, king of ruins, and lord of a scattered race that once ruled the world. Legendary artist P. Craig Russell adapts Michael Moorcock`s climactic Elric novel — the grand story of the final battle between Law and Chaos — to the comics format. This is Russell`s finest work yet, and the greatest Elric epic of them all, combining the best elements of horror, sword, and sorcery into one amazingly powerful story.
