Zebrane w niniejszym tomie szkice o polskiej polityce z ostatnich dwóch i pół wieku łączy myśl, na którą bodajże jako pierwszy zwrócił uwagę Niccolò Machiavelli, iż istnieją dwa światy: świat osobistej moralności jednostek i świat politycznej organizacji, oparte na funkcjonowaniu dwóch różnych kodeksów etycznych. Myśl o istnieniu dwóch rodzajów etyki rozwinął Max Weber. Jego zdaniem polityk powinien kierować się etyką odpowiedzialności, a nie etyką przekonań. Myśl Machiavellego i Webera o istnieniu dwóch etyk uświadamia nam, że według innych kryteriów powinniśmy oceniać zachowania Polaka w roli obywatela, żołnierza, naczelnego wodza i polityka, co szczególnie ważne jest w odniesieniu do Polski popadającej od początku XVIII wieku w zależność od Rosji. W niniejszym tomie staram się przybliżyć najważniejsze momenty z dziejów Polski, począwszy od XVIII wieku, kryteria ich oceny czerpiąc z zasad etyki odpowiedzialności, które powinny były także przyświecać protagonistom opisywanych wydarzeń. Są to sprawy bardzo dyskusyjne, a mój pogląd na nie może mieć charakter mocno subiektywny. Wątpię bowiem, aby istniała jakaś obiektywna wersja historii, poza ustaleniami co do zaistnienia (lub nie) jakichś faktów. Historia to przede wszystkim kwestia narzucanej nam narracji. Nie mając wystarczającej siły, aby tego dokonać, mogę jedynie swoje stanowisko poddać pod rozwagę czytelnika. Ostatecznie to do niego należy osąd.

Lech Mażewski – dr hab., historyk prawa, politolog, publicysta historyczny. Autor m.in. książek Powstańczy szantaż (2001, 2004) oraz Oblany egzamin z polityki. O narodzinach, istnieniu i upadku państwa polskiego w latach 1806-1874 (2016).
