Description:

Mathematics and Statistics for Financial Risk Management is a practical guide to modern financial risk management for both practitioners and academics.
The recent financial crisis and its impact on the broader economy underscore the importance of financial risk management in today’s world. At the same time, financial products and investment strategies are becoming increasingly complex. Today, it is more important than ever that risk managers possess a sound understanding of mathematics and statistics.
In a concise and easy-to-read style, each chapter of this book introduces a different topic in mathematics or statistics. As different techniques are introduced, sample problems and application sections demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to actual risk management problems. Exercises at the end of each chapter and the accompanying solutions at the end of the book allow readers to practice the techniques they are learning and monitor their progress. A companion website includes interactive Excel spreadsheet examples and templates.
This comprehensive resource covers basic statistical concepts from volatility and Bayes’ Law to regression analysis and hypothesis testing. Widely used risk models, including Value-at-Risk, factor analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and stress testing are also explored. A chapter on time series analysis introduces interest rate modeling, GARCH, and jump-diffusion models. Bond pricing, portfolio credit risk, optimal hedging, and many other financial risk topics are covered as well.
If you’re looking for a book that will help you understand the mathematics and statistics of financial risk management, look no further.

    Description:

The Basics of Computer Arithmetic Made Enjoyable and Accessible-with a Special Program Included for Hands-on Learning

"The combination of this book and its associated virtual computer is fantastic! Experience over the last fifty years has shown me that there’s only one way to truly understand how computers work; and that is to learn one computer and its instruction set-no matter how simple or primitive-from the ground up. Once you fully comprehend how that simple computer functions, you can easily extrapolate to more complex machines."
    -Fred Hudson, retired engineer/scientist

"This book-along with the virtual DIY Calculator-is an incredibly useful teaching and learning tool. The interesting trivia nuggets keep you turning the pages to see what’s next. Students will have so much fun reading the text and performing the labs that they won’t even realize they are learning."
-Michael Haghighi, Chairperson of the Business and Computer Information Systems Division, Calhoun Community College, Alabama

"At last, a book that presents an innovative approach to the teaching of computer architecture. Written with authority and verve, witty, superbly illustrated, and enhanced with many laboratory exercises, this book is a must for students and teachers alike."
-Dr. Albert Koelmans, Lecturer in Computer Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and the 2003 recipient of the EASIT-Eng. Gold Award for Innovative Teaching in Computer Engineering

Packed with nuggets of information and tidbits of trivia, How Computers Do Math provides an incredibly fun and interesting introduction to the way in which computers perform their magic in general and math in particular. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual computer/calculator called the DIY Calculator, and the book’s step-by-step interactive laboratories guide you in the creation of a simple program to run on your DIY Calculator.

How Computers Do Math can be enjoyed by non-technical individuals; students of computer science, electronics engineering, and mathematics; and even practicing engineers. All of the illustrations and interactive laboratories featured in the book are provided on the CD-ROM for use by high school, college, and university educators as lecture notes and handouts. Description:

Addresses the rapidly growing field of fractional calculus and provides simplified solutions for linear commensurate-order fractional differential equations
The Fractional Trigonometry: With Applications to Fractional Differential Equations and Science is the result of the authors’ work in fractional calculus, and more particularly, in functions for the solutions of fractional differential equations, which is fostered in the behavior of generalized exponential functions. The authors discuss how fractional trigonometry plays a role analogous to the classical trigonometry for the fractional calculus by providing solutions to linear fractional differential equations. The book begins with an introductory chapter that offers insight into the fundamentals of fractional calculus, and topical coverage is then organized in two main parts. Part One develops the definitions and theories of fractional exponentials and fractional trigonometry. Part Two provides insight into various areas of potential application within the sciences. The fractional exponential function via the fundamental fractional differential equation, the generalized exponential function, and R-function relationships are discussed in addition to the fractional hyperboletry, the R1-fractional trigonometry, the R2-fractional trigonometry, and the R3-trigonometric functions. The Fractional Trigonometry: With Applications to Fractional Differential Equations and Science also:

  • Presents fractional trigonometry as a tool for scientists and engineers and discusses how to apply fractional-order methods to the current toolbox of mathematical modelers
  • Employs a mathematically clear presentation in an e ort to make the topic broadly accessible
  • Includes solutions to linear fractional differential equations and generously features graphical forms of functions to help readers visualize the presented concepts
  • Provides effective and efficient methods to describe complex structures
The Fractional Trigonometry: With Applications to Fractional Differential Equations and Science is an ideal reference for academic researchers, research engineers, research scientists, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, and chemists who need to apply new fractional calculus methods to a variety of disciplines. The book is also appropriate as a textbook for graduate- and PhD-level courses in fractional calculus.
Carl F. Lorenzo is Distinguished Research Associate at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. His past positions include chief engineer of the Instrumentation and Controls Division and chief of the Advanced Controls Technology and Systems Dynamics branches at NASA. He is internationally recognized for his work in the development and application of the fractional calculus and fractional trigonometry.
Tom T. Hartley, PhD, is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Akron. Dr Hartley is a recognized expert in fractional-order systems, and together with Carl Lorenzo, has solved fundamental problems in the area including Riemann’s complementary-function initialization function problem. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University.

    Description:

The book is intended as a manual for a half-year introductory course of number theory. The aim is to present the theory to the extent which is indispensable to every mathematics student, regardless of their future specialization. The target points include the local methods, the Quadratic Reciprocity Law, the Prime Number Theorem, unique factorization of ideals in rings of algebraic integers in finite extensions of~Q, units in the rings of integers in quadratic extensions of~Q, and decomposition of primes in rings of integers. The authors’ main aim was to show that the beauty of number theory lies in the fact that on the one hand it enriches other domains of mathematics, and on the other hand it makes frequent use of their methods and results. Each chapter is complemented with problems, of different complexity. Some solutions and hints are given at the end of the book.
