Description:

In the tradition of classics such as The Lives of a Cell, a bold reframing of our relationship with technology that argues code is "a universal force-swirling through disciplines, absorbing ideas, and connecting worlds" (Linda Liukas).

In the digital world, code is the essential primary building block, the equivalent of the cell or DNA in the biological sphere-and almost as mysterious. Code can create entire worlds, real and virtual; it allows us to connect instantly to people and places around the globe; and it performs tasks that were once only possible in science fiction. It is a superpower, and not just in a technical sense. It is also a gateway to ideas. As vividly illustrated by Samuel Arbesman, it is the ultimate connector, providing new insight and meaning into how everything from language and mythology to biblical texts, biology, and even our patterns of thought connect with the history and nature of computing.

While the building block of code can be used for many wondrous things it can also create deeper wedges in our society and be weaponized to cause damage to our planet or our civilization. Code and computing are too important to be left to the tech community; it is essential that each of us engage with it. And we fail to understand it to our detriment.

By providing us with a framework to think about coding and its effects upon the world and placing the past, current, and future developments in computing into its broader setting we see how software and computers can work for people as opposed to against our needs. With this deeper understanding into the “why” of coding we can be masters of technology rather than its subjects.

Description:

A proof of a theorem can be said to be pure if it draws only on what is ‘close’ or ‘intrinsic’ to that theorem. In this Element we will investigate the apparent preference for pure proofs that has persisted in mathematics since antiquity, alongside a competing preference for impurity. In Section 1, we present two examples of purity, from geometry and number theory. In Section 2, we give a brief history of purity in mathematics. In Section 3, we discuss several different types of purity, based on different measures of distance between theorem and proof. In Section 4 we discuss reasons for preferring pure proofs, for the varieties of purity constraints presented in Section 3. In Section 5 we conclude by reflecting briefly on purity as a preference for the local and how issues of translation intersect with the considerations we have raised throughout this work.

Description:

A "fascinating and irresistible" blend of science and sports that reveals what a baseball (or bat, or player) in motion does-and why (The New York Times Book Review).
How fast can a batted ball go? What effect do stitch patterns have on wind resistance? How far does a curveball break? Who reaches first base faster after a bunt, a right- or left-handed batter? The answers are often surprising-and always illuminating.
This newly revised third edition considers recent developments in the science of sport such as the neurophysiology of batting, bat vibration, and the character of the "sweet spot." Faster pitchers, longer hitters, and enclosed stadiums also get a good, hard scientific look to determine their effects on the game.
Filled with anecdotes about famous players and incidents, The Physics of Baseball provides fans with fascinating insights into America’s favorite pastime.

Description:

This book presents an overview of recent developments in the use of nanomaterials, such as nanocellulose, nanolignin, and nanoclay, in the synthesis of sustainable, bio-based adhesives for manufacturing high-performance, eco-friendly wood-based composites with enhanced properties, close-to-zero formaldehyde emission, and a lower environmental footprint for advanced value-added applications. In recent years, bio-based wood adhesives have received great attention as a sustainable alternative to the conventional synthetic adhesives used in the wood-based industry. However, bioadhesives based on natural and renewable feedstocks, such as protein, starch, lignin, and tannin, have inferior properties compared to thermosetting synthetic resins. Reinforcement with nanomaterials with a high aspect ratio has the potential to improve the performance of bio-based wood adhesives and the technological properties of wood composites. The book explores the present-day challenges and future prospects of using nanomaterials in bio-based wood adhesives. The content of this book appeals to materials scientists, wood scientists, environmental scientists, and wood-based panel industry professionals.

Description:

Discover a unique and fun approach to adopting modern typed functions programming patterns. This book uses playful metaphors and examples to help you learn Haskell through imagination, building on math without relying on imperative crutches or technical complexity. You’ll use math to build completely different Typed Functional patterns from the ground up and understand the link between building Mathematics through Types and constructing Haskell as a programming language.
Intended for working with various applications, especially AI-powered apps, the book gently builds up to what are normally considered complex and difficult concepts all without needing a PhD to understand them. Illustrative explanations will guide you to tackle monads, using monad transformer stacks to structure real programs, foldable and traversable structures, as well as other Type classes. This book will also help you structure programs efficiently and apply your own abstractions to real-life problem domains. Next, you’ll explore exciting advancements in AI, including building with OpenAI APIs, creating a terminal chatbot, adding web functionality, and enhancing with retrieval-augmented generation. Finally, you’ll delve into AI multi-agents and future directions using Arrows abstraction, reinforcing Haskell’s design.
Magical Haskell is a solution for programmers who feel limited by imperative programming languages but are also put off by excessively mathematical approaches.
What You Will Learn

  • Grasp a solid math foundation without complex technicalities for Types and Typeclasses.
  • Solve problems via a typed functional approach and understand why it’s superior to what’s available in the imperative language world (“if it compiles, it runs”).
  • Build your own abstractions to efficiently resolve problems in any given domain.
  • Develop AI frameworks in Haskell, including chatbots, web functionality, and retrieval-augmented generation.

Who This Book Is For
Haskell programmers of all levels and those interested in Type Theory.
