Description:

Pasta is a conventional Italian product made from durum wheat semolina and characterized by high protein content, firm shape and texture. Extrusion technology allows incorporation of a variety of ingredients to pasta such as legumes, millets, pseudo cereals and others including mushrooms, tubers and pigmented components to enrich conventional pasta. It is a convenient, popular and versatile product, offering the food industry and researchers the opportunity to offer high nutritional quality by using alternative ingredients of nutritive excellence with a high concentration of bioactive components which induce several health benefits through antioxidative pathways. To deal with compromised functional properties of resultant pasta, different techno-functional interventions including use of hydrocolloids and modification of flours which are used to improve rheological and textural profile are necessary.
Advances in Pasta Technology documents the history of pasta and its rise from niche to mainstream. The book is divided into 4 sections including an introduction that covers pasta history, global market statistics, traditional pasta making technology and processing along with quality characteristics. Another section is dedicated to nutritive valorization of pasta including modulation in the bio-functional characteristics as a function of ingredients including development of gluten free pasta, micronutrient fortification approach and use of protein, fibre and antioxidant rich flours as potential alternative ingredients. Further sections focus on technological approaches to enhance the performance of specialty pasta including additives, modification of flours and processing techniques and quality management, plant project profile and cost analysis details. This text highlights every aspect of pasta science, technology and market control.

Total pages: 140

Description:

This book highlights the background and fundamentals of nonlinear optical materials in relation to all-optical switching applications. It explains major aspects of nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption phenomena which are essential to decide the figure-of-merit of various materials for the all-optical switching. Autocorrelation technique, frequency-resolved optical gating, spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction, grating-eliminated no-nonsense observation of ultrafast incident laser light e-fields are discussed to measure the temporal and spectral profiles of the ultrafast pulsed lasers. Advanced nonlinear optical characterization methods such as single- and dual-arm Z-scan, pump-probe and beam deflection techniques are also discussed at length. The transmission signal obtained in the majority of the nonlinear optical effects is found to be weak which creates hiccups to obtain faster switching speeds. Various solutions are discussed to overcome these existing limitations of the all-optical switching-based devices. Optical nonlinearities in semiconductors, organic molecules and challenges in all-optical switching devices are also addressed in the book.

Description:

Deep-sea mining is currently in a critical phase wherein, detailed resource estimation has led to identification of potentially rich areas on the seafloor that can be mined, as well as testing of pre-prototype seabed mining machines and establishment of pilot plants for processing of deep-sea minerals is underway. This coupled with rigorous environmental data collection along with impact assessment of simulated as well as test mining is not only providing requisite information for likely impacts for development of predictive models but also for developing mitigation measures to minimise such impacts.
Interest in mining the seafloor deposits as potential source of critical metals has been enhanced in the current century owing to the rising population and consumer demands, as well as the fact that these minerals contain battery metals such as Co, Ni, Mn besides copper that can help transition to green energy alternatives. However, concerns over ecological impacts on marine ecosystems and those related to economic, social and cultural implications need to be addressed for ensuring sustainable mining of seabed mineral resources.
With this in view, this fifth book in the series of ‘Deep-sea Mining’, focusses on issues related to management, policy and regulation. The book is divided into the following five sections:
I – General issues on resource potential and future prospects
II – Resource and environmental data management
III – Approaches towards environmental monitoring
IV – Techno-economic considerations for commercial deep-sea mining
V – Implementation of Law of the sea and Establishment of Mining code
Chapters in this volume have been contributed by experts having decades of experience in their respective fields with an aim to provide key insights towards operationalisation of different aspects of deep-sea mining. This information is expected to serve as reference material for all stake holders including researchers, contractors, mining companies, regulators as well as NGOs involved in deep-sea mining and marine environmental conservation.
