Description:

From Publishers Weekly
This solid techno-thriller from bestseller Brown (_Shadow Command_) focuses on Scion Aviation International, a private security contractor providing mission support to the dwindling U.S. military presence in Iraq. Operated by a maverick former air force general and a former U.S. president, Scion has resources, expertise and connections that cause resentment among active-duty American troops in the region. When Kurdish terrorists attack Turkey using Iraqi territory as a haven, the Turkish military follows precedent set by the U.S. itself in attacking terrorist bases, which brings them into contact with U.S. forces. While the current president attempts to cool tensions, Scion takes action that not only strains relations between NATO allies but also reveals the company’s possession of a technological superiority that poses a destabilizing threat to the region. While Brown delivers plenty of red meat action, he leaves questions of loyalty and accountability unresolved. (June)

Product Description

The clash of civilizations will be won . . . by the highest bidder.

Newly inaugurated president Joseph Gardner has followed through on his pledge to pull American forces out of Iraq. But the region has quickly re-emerged as a hot zone, as Kurdish nationalist attacks have led the Republic of Turkey to invade northern Iraq. Reluctant to recommit U.S. troops, the commander-in-chief turns to former president Kevin Martindale and retired Air Force Lieutenant-General Patrick McLanahan, who have left government behind for the lucrative world of military contracting. Their private firm, Scion Aviation International, is suddenly the only credible armed force in the region capable of blunting the Turks’ advances. America’s most lethal military contractor has become more powerful than anyone anticipated-too powerful for even the President to control.
Now Patrick McLanahan is going rogue, determined to take the fight directly to the Turks, and no one is going to stop him. But where does his loyalty ultimately lie: with his country, his commander-in-chief, his fellow warriors . . . or with his company’s shareholders?

Description:

From Publishers Weekly
Longtime series hero Maj. Gen. Patrick McLanahan takes to the air again in this rousing-as-usual techno-military thriller by veteran Brown. Always the loose cannon, the general has been demoted and reassigned after sending his unmanned robo-planes against a Russian missile battery without permission. As narrated in Brown’s last book, Air Battle Force, the Taliban military, chased out of Afghanistan by American troops, has invaded Turkmenistan. The Russian Federation, reacting to the invasion and overthrow of the Russian-backed government, sends an occupying force. The Americans are part of the U.N. peacekeeping mission when the Security Council issues orders for all parties to halt military activity. The first third of the book relates the backstory and ramps up readers on all the new military hardware. Each weapons system is minutely described, and the characteristics of its employment lovingly detailed. But this minutiae fades into the background as Brown kicks on the after-burners when the nefarious president of the Russian Federation, Gen. Anatoliy Gryzlov, plans a long-range bomber attack on the U.S. mainland. The disgraced but unbowed McLanahan must convince the government and the armed services to follow his ingenious and daring plan to halt the Russian assault. The resulting battles, both in the air and on the ground, are riveting, as they are in all of Brown’s books, proving once again that he is the grand master of his genre. Readers who are new to the series would be advised to dive in several novels back (_The Tin Man_; Battle Born; Warrior Class), while those who are already up to speed can look forward to another pulse-pounding, fact-filled read.

From
Brown, the author of a string of technothrillers, returns with another in the Patrick McLanahan series. The novel follows on the heels of last year’s Air Battle Force, which established that McLanahan, the aerial warfare expert, is now commanding a unit of commandoes who employ robotic attack planes to carry out top-secret missions. Now McLanahan is trying to defend the U.S. from attack while redeeming himself in the eyes of his military superiors (who recently demoted him for bending the rules). It’s typical Brown, with plenty of technological bafflegab, rough-and-tough dialogue, and tough-as-nails characters. By this point, McLanahan has been through it all: he’s been caught up in a power struggle in the Middle East, put his neck on the line in Korea, risked it all in the Persian Gulf, and hunted down a KGB mole. And yet, probably because he believes so passionately in what he’s writing about, Brown somehow manages to keep this series from becoming, well . . . ludicrous. For fans of over-the-top, gut-wrenching thrillers, this one’s a winner. David Pitt

Description:

From Publishers Weekly
Set in the immediate future, this blockbuster demonstrates the exciting possibilities open to the techno-thriller in a post-Soviet world. Lithuania, seeking to remove the last traces of Soviet rule, plans to get rid of a secret research facility where scientists have developed a Stealth-type bomber–with the involuntary aid of none other than David Luger, presumed killed in Flight of the Old Dog . Luger has instead been captured, brainwashed and given a new identity, but somehow he has retained his professional expertise. Informed of his survival, the U.S. government mounts a rescue. But Gen. Brad Elliott, who led the Old Dog mission, makes plans of his own involving the EB-42 Megafortress, with its bristling array of missiles and electronics. Then the two operations become entangled in a Lithuanian uprising and an invasion from neighboring Belarus. While the rescue subplot is neither credible nor necessary, and while the Old Dog’s frequently recycled crew is becoming somewhat shopworn, the Lithuanian story line sets the stage for dramatic high-tech adventure.

From Kirkus Reviews
Brown brings back the souped-up helicopters that were the technostars of Hammerhead (1990) for a supporting role in a near- future war between Lithuania and Belarus. That’s Byelorussia to those still updating their old globes. Lithuania is the much more likable victim in a war that parallels Saddam Hussein’s attack on tiny Kuwait. The villains here are a General Anton Voschanka, a Byelorussian who also heads all CIS (ex-USSR) forces in the neighborhood, and Viktor Gabovich, an especially nasty ex-KGB type who controls a supersecret aeronautical research center near the Lithuanian capital. Both these creeps hate the new commonwealth, loathe the Lithuanians, and pine for the old world order. One of their chief irritants is General Dominikas Palcikas. Palcikas was a Soviet hero until he cast his lot with the renegade Baltic republic. Now he is head of the tiny Lithuanian defense forces. Tough, charismatic, and just a touch fascist (but not in the least Nazi), Palcikas has heard the sabers rattling across the border, and he’s whipping his forces into shape for war. But the Byelorussians are armed with nuclear weapons and outnumber the Balts a zillion to one. America’s post- Bush president wants to help when the invasion starts, but he doesn’t want to get dragged into war. He is forced to reach for the mad genius of the Air Force, General Brad Elliott, who has a plan that will save Lithuania and, at the same time, rescue one of the heroes of a previous Brown novel (Flight of the Old Dog, 1986) who’s been brainwashed by the KGB into believing he’s a Soviet plane designer and has been chemically induced to design the first Russian Stealth bomber. Elliott and his troops make good use of those handy new helicopter-cum-fixed-wing planes that float like butterflies and sting like bees. Longer than Desert Storm–but with much more satisfactory results. — Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Description:

From Publishers Weekly
It is not the Reagan Administration that has secretly been developing a Strategic Defense Initiative in this first book by retired USAF Captain Brown, but the Soviets, and as soon as the system comes on line, the Russians flagrantly attack American intelligence and military craft with their laser weapon. The President and his advisors appeal to the UN Security Council; they even dispatch sophisticated B-1 bombers and a new, armed space satellite, but both are thwarted, and the U.S. is left dangerously incapable of detecting a missile launch from the eastern U.S.S.R. Desperate, they decide to send a souped-up veteran B-52 bomber, the Old Dog, and its expert navigator Patrick McLanahan on a crucial mission into Siberia to neutralize the death ray. Brown knows his airborne and naval high-tech equipment and the cockpit bantering of crews, and can tell a basically interesting story. He does not, however, examine the frightening political consequences of the superpowers trading shots. The novel’s excitement is essentially that of a boy’s adventure fantasy rather than the well-realized suspense of a credible thriller. 75,000 first printing; $75,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selections; Military Book Club selection; author tour.

From Library Journal
In this all-too-predictable tale, a reconfigured B-52 bomber and its doughty crew try to prevent a war between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. Dastardly politicians and greedy military careerists attempt to thwart our friends in the skies, but, aided by hawkish President Martindale, strike-warfare expert Patrick McLanahan and his buddies put their prototype aircraft through its paces while flirting with their own capture or destruction. Unfortunately, Brown here fails to live up to the thought-provoking substance of his previous books, notably Shadows of Steel (LJ 6/15/96). The major characters from those earlier works reappear (accompanied by turgid recapitulations of past escapes) and seize the opportunity to weigh in on the side of the good guys. Despite battle scenes and lots of shouted dialog, the pace is leaden and the characterizations dull. Only for comprehensive Brown or aviation-fiction collections.

From
The Old Dog (an airplane, as Brown regulars know) learns yet more new tricks in Brown’s latest technothriller. The EB-52 Megafortresses (improved descendants of the Old Dog) are about to be scrapped, the rest of the U.S. heavy bomber force radically downsized. Then the Chinese seriously try to conquer Taiwan, and President Martindale wants to defend it equally seriously, despite U.S. military weakness, interservice rivalry, and political opposition. Led by Brad Elliott and Patrick McLanahan, the reunited Old Dog crew flies one official mission against the Chinese–and then is faced with arrest for exceeding orders. The next mission–unofficial–becomes justly compared with the exploits of the Flying Tigers of World War II and precipitates a decisive U.S. bomber counteroffensive that defeats the Chinese. Longer on well-handled action and hardware than on characterization (virtually all the navy personnel in it are caricatures), the yarn is another consistent page-turner from Brown, anyway, and won’t disappoint his numerous readers. Description:

From Publishers Weekly
China and Russia pursue newly aggressive policies in hot spots like Somalia and Yemen that threaten the U.S. in this exciting near-future political thriller from bestseller Brown (_Rogue Forces_). Kenneth Phoenix, the U.S. vice president, finds himself at odds with Joseph Gardner, the cautious U.S. president, who’s inclined to cancel a space weapon system, which includes a precision-guided artificial meteorite, in favor of negotiating treaties to abolish space-based weapons. Characters from past Brown books, like Lt. Gen. Patrick McLanahan (ret.) and Lt. Col. Jason Richter, play key roles as the U.S. faces growing crises at sea and in space. Congress scarcely exists. Techno-thriller fans will enjoy the detailed descriptions of cutting-edge technologies as they morph into action sequences (The sabots hit the Earth traveling almost two miles a second, each with the force of a two-thousand-pound high-explosive bomb, creating a crater large enough to fit a jumbo jet within it). Brown’s latest finds the U.S. with a supreme advantage on the international stage, having successfully developed a space-based weapons system similar to what Ronald Reagan envisioned with his Star Wars initiative. But when Pakistan launches a nuclear missile, it all goes bad. The new weapons system successfully terminates the threat, but the number of casualties prompts the media to paint the U.S. as the bad guy. China takes advantage and creates a series of antisatellite missiles and then moves to occupy a neighboring country. U.S. President Joseph Gardner, preparing to seek reelection and fight off a power-hungry vice president, has his hands more than full. He will have to turn to a surprising ally to keep the situation from escalating into world war. Tom Clancy fans and tech-heavy thriller junkies will find this novel to be pure joy. The political components add an extra level of interest, making this one of Brown’s better efforts. –Jeff Ayers
