Description:

Number Systems: A Path into Rigorous Mathematics aims to introduce number systems to an undergraduate audience in a way that emphasises the importance of rigour, and with a focus on providing detailed but accessible explanations of theorems and their proofs.
The book continually seeks to build upon students’ intuitive ideas of how numbers and arithmetic work, and to guide them towards the means to embed this natural understanding into a more structured framework of understanding. The author’s motivation for writing this book is that most previous texts, which have complete coverage of the subject, have not provided the level of explanation needed for first-year students. On the other hand, those that do give good explanations tend to focus broadly on Foundations or Analysis and provide incomplete coverage of Number Systems.
Features

  • Approachable for first year undergraduates, but still of interest to more advanced students and postgraduates
  • Does not merely present definitions, theorems and proofs, but also motivates them in terms of intuitive knowledge and discusses methods of proof
  • Draws attention to connections with other areas of mathematics
  • Plenty of exercises for students, both straightforward problems and more in-depth investigations
  • Introduces many concepts that are required in more advanced topics in mathematics

New to the second edition

  • Complete solutions to all exercises, and hints for the in-depth investigations
  • Extensive changes to chapters 4 and 5, including defining integral domains as distinct from commutative rings, a more complete discussion of irreducibles, primes and unique factorisation, and more topics in elementary number theory
  • A completely revised chapter 8, giving a more coherent account of quadratic rings and their unique (or non-unique) factorisation properties
  • A thorough correction of typos and errors across all chapters
  • Updates to the bibliography

Description:

Microwave Claddings presents an effective approach for improving the surface properties of materials, providing distinct advantages compared to conventional procedures such as flame spraying or arc welding. It explains how composites, metals, ceramics, and polymers can be coated with microwave claddings to improve resistance to corrosion, durability, and strength.
Exploring this promising application of microwave technology, the book demonstrates its usage in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas, due to its capacity to accurately regulate heat input, reduce distortion, and attain exceptional metallurgical bonding. It discusses the mechanics of microwave heating, cladding processes and materials, computational modeling, and quality control methods. The book includes practical case studies and the critical factors that impact microwave cladding, including substrate material, power level, frequency, and particle feed rate.
The book will interest engineering students and researchers studying tribology, cladding and microwave technology, and manufacturing.

Description:

Comprehensive resource on the dynamically developing issue of radio communication over long distances, especially in outer space Reception of Weak Radio Signals from Space explores all aspects of detecting and making sense of extremely weak radio frequency (RF) signals, especially those emanating from space. The subject matter ranges from general physics fundamentals to highly specialized issues of design and optimization of microwave antennas, low-noise amplifiers, receivers, transmitters, and frequency synthesizers with very specific characteristics.
Special consideration is paid to the advanced technique of radio linking by reflection of signals from the lunar surface, where, using modern software for digital communication, it is possible to realize links with signals ten or more decibels weaker compared to analogue modes. Each chapter briefly summarizes the theory and applicable relationships and complements the discussed topic with descriptions of specific solutions for individual parts of the communication system. Detailed annotated examples of calculations and implementations are included to aid in reader understanding.
The book also discusses specific properties of antennas including brightness and noise temperature, directivity, and polarization, and covers the technical characteristics of interplanetary probes such as Voyager, Cassini, Mars Odyssey, and others.
Additional topics in Reception of Weak Radio Signals from Space include:

  • Microwave receivers, covering noise matching, cooled amplifiers, noise figure measurement, and low-noise amplifiers for 1.3 and 10 GHz bands
  • Wave propagation in free space and the influence of the atmosphere via precipitation clouds and the ionosphere, including techniques for measuring the figure of merit G/T of the receiving system
  • Local oscillators, including direct digital and phase-locked loop synthesizers
  • High-frequency rectangular and circular waveguides and coaxial and planar transmission lines
  • Parabolic antennas, describing mirror geometry and its radiation as well as scalar radiator feeds

Reception of Weak Radio Signals from Space is an excellent resource on up-to-date information for engineers and scientists working in space communications as well as graduate and senior undergraduate students and radio amateurs.

Description:

In this new and brilliantly organized book of essays, Anthony Giddens discusses three main theoretical traditions in social science that cut across the division between Marxist and non-Marxist sociology: interpretive sociology, functionalism, and structuralism.

Beginning with a critical examination of the importance of structuralism for contemporary sociology, the author develops a comprehensive account of what he calls "the theory of structuration." One of the main themes is that social theory must recognize, as it has not done hitherto, that all social actors are knowledgeable about the social systems they produce and reproduce in their conduct. In order to grasp the significance of this, he argues, we have to reconsider some of the most basic concepts in sociology.

In particular, Giddens argues, it is essential to recognize the significance of time-space relations in social theory. He rejects the distinction between synchrony and diachrony, or statics and dynamics, involved in both structuralism and functionalism, and offers extensive critical commentary on the latter as an approach to sociology.

The book, which can be described as a "non-functionalist manifesto," breaks with the three main theoretical traditions in the social sciences today while retaining the significant contributions each contains. In so doing Giddens discusses a range of fundamental problem areas in the social sciences: power and domination, conflict and contradiction, and social transformation. He concludes with an overall appraisal of the key problems in social theory today.

Title: Predication and Genesis: Metaphysics as Fundamental Heuristic after Schelling’s ‘The Ages of the World’

Language: angielski
Year: 2024
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Edinburgh University Press
ISBN: 9781399531498

Description:

Wolfram Hogrebe offers a robust, uncompromisingly metaphysical reading of Schelling’s unfinished masterpiece, The Ages of the World, to propose a completely contemporary epistemology. By translating Schelling into the language of predicate logic and philosophy of language, Hogrebe also defends its metaphysical claims, equally foregrounding the relevance and challenges that Schelling’s work presents to contemporary analytic philosophy. Originally published 35 years ago, Hogrebe’s book remains ahead of his time. It masterfully bridges the analytic and continental divide – before most philosophers considered this a possibility – and successfully demonstrates Schelling’s contemporary relevance and vitality. Included in this translation is a new author’s preface to the English edition, his preface to the Italian translation (2011),an introduction to the philosophical themes of the book by the translators who are prominent Schelling scholars, a Postface by Markus Gabriel, Hogrebe’s colleague in Bonn, along with a readers’ guide to Hogrebe’s major works.
