Description:

This is the unique story of observing a total solar eclipse for no less than 74 consecutive minutes. On the summer morning of June 30, 1973, the Sun rises on the Canary Islands. But it is strangely indented by the Moon. The eclipse of the century has just begun. From the west, the lunar shadow rushes to the African coast at a velocity of over 2000 kilometers per hour. Astronomers on the ground will enjoy seven short minutes of total eclipse to study the solar corona – too short for Pierre Léna and seven scientists who board the Concorde 001 prototype, an extraordinary plane to become the first commercial supersonic aircraft. With André Turcat as chief pilot and his crew of five, at 17000 m altitude, the aircraft remains in the lunar shadow for 74 minutes, a record time of scientific observations allowing for exceptional measurements and not yet beaten. Science, technology, aviation and history combine in the story of a unique human adventure aboard a legendary aircraft, illustrated with a rich and original iconography. It reflects the wonderful domains that science and technology can open, and the passion in the professions they offer. Fifty years after this flight, the Sun’s corona has yet to reveal all its secrets. A tenuous cloud of gas and dust, it influences the Earth, creates the aurora borealis, affects communications and can endanger satellites. To better understand it, we need to decipher its images. This enlarged second edition adds two full chapters dedicated to the solar corona and its plasma and its dust. In a final chapter the authors make the link to today’s great adventure of astrophysics: the search for exoplanets, Earth’s twin sisters, around stars not too far from the Sun, which are detected and studied through eclipses of their host stars. This book testifies to the horizons of science and the unprecedented emotions it can bring to us all. A must read for every eclipse chaser and fan of true scientific adventures.
Pierre Léna is emeritus professor at Paris Observatory, Serge Koutchmy (1940-2023) was a recognised solar astronomer and eclipse specialist.

Subjects: Science & Technology, Mathematics, Algebra
Publisher: Springer-Verlag New York, LLC
ISBN: 9783031427602
Total pages: 249

Description:

This book lays the foundation for a theory of coarse groups: namely, sets with operations that satisfy the group axioms “up to uniformly bounded error”. These structures are the group objects in the category of coarse spaces, and arise naturally as approximate subgroups, or as coarse kernels. The first aim is to provide a standard entry-level introduction to coarse groups. Extra care has been taken to give a detailed, self-contained and accessible account of the theory. The second aim is to quickly bring the reader to the forefront of research. This is easily accomplished, as the subject is still young, and even basic questions remain unanswered.
Reflecting its dual purpose, the book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the fundamentals of coarse groups and their actions. Here the theory of coarse homomorphisms, quotients and subgroups is developed, with proofs of coarse versions of the isomorphism theorems, and it is shown how coarse actions are related to fundamental aspects of geometric group theory. The second part, which is less self-contained, is an invitation to further research, where each thread leads to open questions of varying depth and difficulty. Among other topics, it explores coarse group structures on set-groups, groups of coarse automorphisms and spaces of controlled maps. The main focus is on connections between the theory of coarse groups and classical subjects, including: number theory; the study of bi-invariant metrics on groups; quasimorphisms and stable commutator length; groups of outer automorphisms; and topological groups and their actions.
The book will primarily be of interest to researchers and graduate students in geometric group theory, topology, category theory and functional analysis, but some parts will also be accessible to advanced undergraduates.

Description:

Lattice Boltzmann models have a remarkable ability to simulate single- and multi-phase fluids and transport processes within them. A rich variety of behaviors, including higher Reynolds numbers flows, phase separation, evaporation, condensation, cavitation, buoyancy, and interactions with surfaces can readily be simulated. This book provides a basic introduction that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes. It avoids the more difficult mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those with more interest in model application than detailed mathematical foundations will find this a powerful "quick start" guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included. Working code is provided on the Internet.

Description:

A warped product manifold is a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold whose metric tensor can be decomposed into a Cartesian product of the y geometry and the x geometry – except that the x-part is warped, that is, it is rescaled by a scalar function of the other coordinates y. The notion of warped product manifolds plays very important roles not only in geometry but also in mathematical physics, especially in general relativity. In fact, many basic solutions of the Einstein field equations, including the Schwarzschild solution and the Robertson-Walker models, are warped product manifolds. The first part of this volume provides a self-contained and accessible introduction to the important subject of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and submanifolds. The second part presents a detailed and up-to-date account on important results of warped product manifolds, including several important spacetimes such as Robertson-Walker’s and Schwarzschild’s.The famous John Nash’s embedding theorem published in 1956 implies that every warped product manifold can be realized as a warped product submanifold in a suitable Euclidean space. The study of warped product submanifolds in various important ambient spaces from an extrinsic point of view was initiated by the author around the beginning of this century. The last part of this volume contains an extensive and comprehensive survey of numerous important results on the geometry of warped product submanifolds done during this century by many geometers.

Description:

‘The authors of this book offer a very strong reason for the study of classical mechanics describing it ‘as the base on which the whole pyramid of modern physics has been erected’ . In order that students can gauge their understanding of the various topics, many exercises are introduced. Some of those should be straightforward whilst others are quite challenging . The authors are to be thanked for delivering a highly readable text which should assure a continued supply of practitioners of classical mechanics and its applications.’Contemporary PhysicsProblem solving in physics is not simply a test of understanding, but an integral part of learning. This book contains complete step-by-step solutions for all exercise problems in Essential Classical Mechanics, with succinct chapter-by-chapter summaries of key concepts and formulas. The degree of difficulty with problems varies from quite simple to very challenging; but none too easy, as all problems in physics demand some subtlety of intuition. The emphasis of the book is not so much in acquainting students with various problem-solving techniques as in suggesting ways of thinking. For undergraduate and graduate students, as well as those involved in teaching classical mechanics, this book can be used as a supplementary text or as an independent study aid.
