Przypisano to jej brakowi taktu, z jakiego słynęła w rodzinie, i po jej wyjeździe próbowano książkę „rosyjską" odebrać.
Mówi się, że przeżycia z dzieciństwa mają decydujący wpływ na kształtowanie charakteru. Wątpię jednak, by to zamiłowanie od dziecka do przyrody, i nawet późniejsze studia ornitologiczne, jakie rozpoczął na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, zrobiły z Józefa Mackiewicza „mistrza opisów przyrody”. Przytoczony tu epizod zaowocował, moim zdaniem, czym innym; niechęcią do językowych patriotyzmów. Studia przyrodnicze dokonały reszty; z punktu widzenia biologicznego wszelki nacjonalizm jest bzdurą. Wprawdzie jego pierwszym utworem napisanym i drukowanym był opis Puszczy Białowieskiej, w której przebywał z ekspedycją naukową, ale twierdzi, że o zmianie zawodu zadecydowały „Stracone złudzenia” Balzaca. Balzac, o ile pamiętam, nie interesował się ani trochę krajobrazem. Przerzuceniu się do dziennikarstwa pomogło powodzenie owej „Puszczy Białowieskiej”, ale życie bohemy wileńskiej na pewno nie sprzyjało obserwacjom przyrodniczym. Najpiękniejszy wschód słońca, oglądany po pijanemu z okna podmiejskiej knajpy, nie jest inspiracją do literackiego opisu.
Można, naturalnie, silić się, by go opisać, talent dużo może i pomoże, będzie to jednak taki opis, jaki czytelnicy ukradkiem przepuszczają w czytaniu, a znawcy twierdzą, że należy do przestarzałej konwencji literackiej. I mają rację.
U Mackiewicza przeciwnie. Topografia, stan pogody, jakość gruntu itp. szczegóły są w jego powieściach ściśle związane z akcją -i nauczył się ich obserwacji nie od Brehma i Bogdanowa, i nie na wykładach uniwersyteckich, cokolwiek by sam o tym sądził, ale na wojnie, w tej ruchomej wojnie polsko bolszewickiej. kiedy zagajnik, wykrot w gruncie, w który zawalić mógł się koń z jeźdźcem, były sprawą życia i śmierci.
