Description:

When two women tragically perish in a Duluth snowdrift, the one called Edna is reborn in ‘Duluth’, the popular television series and the one called Beryl finds herself in a ‘Hyatt Regency’ romantic novel entitled Rogue Duke. In Duluth they do it all with word processors. Meanwhile Lieutenant Darlene Ecks, strip-search enthusiast, terrorizes a barrio full of illegal Mexican immigrants until they rise up in defiance, the mayor plumbs the mysteries of a bright red spaceship and a life and death contest is waged between Duluth’s leading socialite and its foremost author to complete contradictory biographies of Betty Grable.

Gore Vidal’s wicked extravaganza sports special effects not expected in a novel; and it poses taunting puzzles like who is the guy they call The Dude? And why is it said, ‘Every society gets the Duluth it deserves’?

Falling somewhere between the realms of Henry Adams and all of Monty Python, Gore Vidal has for many years served as America’s own Tiresias – a seer and a scourge as well as an entertainer of the highest order. –Jay McInerney

One of the most brilliant, most radical and most subversive pieces of writing to emerge from America in recent years. –New Statesman

For many, Detroit is the crunch capital of the world. More than forty local chip companies once fed the Motor City’s never-ending appetite for salty snacks, including New Era, Everkrisp, Krun-Chee, Mello Crisp, Wolverine and Vita-Boy. Only Better Made remains. From the start, the brand was known for light, crisp chips that were near to perfection. Discover how Better Made came to be, how its chips are made and how competition has shaped the industry into what it is today. Bite into the flavorful history of Michigan’s most iconic chip as author Karen Dybis explores how Detroit "chipreneurs" rose from garage-based businesses to become snack food royalty.

Description:

They are driving home from the search party when they see her. The trees are coarse and tall in the winter light, standing like men.

Lauren and her father Niall live alone in the Highlands, in a small village surrounded by pine forest. When a woman stumbles out onto the road one Halloween night, Niall drives her back to their house in his pickup. In the morning, she’s gone.

In a community where daughters rebel, men quietly rage, and drinking is a means of forgetting, mysteries like these are not out of the ordinary. The trapper found hanging with the dead animals for two weeks. Locked doors and stone circles. The disappearance of Lauren’s mother a decade ago.
Lauren looks for answers in her tarot cards, hoping she might one day be able to read her father’s turbulent mind. Neighbours know more than they let on, but when local teenager Ann-Marie goes missing it’s no longer clear who she can trust.

In the shadow of the Highland forest, Francine Toon captures the wildness of rural childhood and the intensity of small-town claustrophobia. In a place that can feel like the edge of the word, she unites the chill of the modern gothic with the pulse of a thriller. It is the perfect novel for our haunted times.

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

A company of Spanish conquistadors, led by a mercenary Irishman named Hugh O’Conor, built a small fort on a shelf of land overlooking the east side of the Santa Cruz River in 1775. For the first 100 years of its existence life in Tucson had a decidedly martial flavor under Spanish rule, under Mexican rule and under American rule. Even after the settlement moved outside the fortress walls there was fighting between Confederate troops and Union supporters during the Civil War and the threat of attacks from the Apaches was a real menace for decades. It wasn’t until the 1880s and the arrival of the railroad that the military presence in Tucson receded into memory.

By 1900 Tucson’s population had edged above 7,000 and it was the largest town in the Arizona Territory – a distribution center for livestock and crops and newly discovered minerals. When Arizona entered the Union in 1912 Tucson was the first city of the 48th state, although it would shortly be eclipsed by Phoenix.

The county seat of Pima County began gathering a national reputation as a health and winter resort, favored especially by "lungers," as visitors with respiratory ailments to the dry heat of the Sonoran Desert were known locally. While the population of Tucson grew steadily by 1950 you could still clamber atop the roof of a three-story building and have an unobstructed view of the entire city.

Spurred by suburban sprawl and federal funds for rebuilding American downtowns, Tucson became an enthusiastic player in urban renewal in the1960s. Even after preservationists woke up and recommended the saving of 75 buildings in 1969, 68 were torn down. Our walking tour of downtown Tucson will seek out those expressions of Southwest architecture that still remain and we will begin where the town began over 230 years ago, which has been rebuilt to look like it looked back then..

27,000 ASPIRATION-PLANTS

For many of us, the inspiration to write poetry visits us without advance notice, stays but fleetingly, and then departs. However, on a summer’s day in New York in 1983, spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy had a different experience. The inspiration came to him to write 27,000 short poems. He had no idea how many years this epic project would take, or even if it was humanly possible. But he rode the crest of this wave of inspiration and poems started flowing forth – poems about the inner life, about meditation, about the struggles of the mind and the small victories of the heart. There were poems that encompassed the sweep of centuries, while others celebrated the simple beauty of sunrise and sunset. In many ways, the poet became a divine cartographer, mapping the vast inner realms of the soul. The years passed by and still the poems streamed from his pen. Finally, in 1998, almost 15 years later, he celebrated the end of his epic journey. As he writes in one poem:

Life’s perfection-road
Is very long,
But the journey is richly rewarding.

These poems are offered in 27 separate e-books, comprising 1,000 poems each. The books can be picked up in those moments where you feel the need for a surge of inner courage, an uplifting message, or merely a reminder of what is real in this transient world. Sometimes we just need to be re-focused on our spiritual path and Sri Chinmoy’s wise and lucid words have a way of clearing our minds of obstructions and guiding us to our own spiritual awakening. Essentially, these are poems to live with, to re-read again and again so that they resonate, like mantras, in one’s entire being.

A REAL-LIFE DISASTER MOVIE: A minute-by-minute account of 2 simultaneous catastrophes during a 1982 blizzard-and the extraordinary courage of civilians and first responders

For fans of Deep Survival and Adam Higginbotham’s Midnight in Chernobyl and Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space

Dedicated to first responders and every person who steps up to act when it matters.

More than 40 years before a Black Hawk helicopter collided mid-air with American Airlines Flight 5342 over the Potomac River, a desperate race against time took place nearby in overwhelming conditions.

Washington, DC, was in the grips of a historic snowstorm on January 13, 1982 that gridlocked the city when Air Florida 90 crashes into a bridge jammed with traffic and plunges into the iced-over Potomac River.

6 people survive the crash, clinging to wreckage in the icy river as a Park Police helicopter risks a daring rescue in nearly whiteout conditions. As the rescue is taking place, DC’s Metro system suffers its first fatal derailment nearby, with dozens injured.

In this page-turning drama, journalist and former firefighter/EMT Bruce Goldfarb recreates the harrowing struggles for survival and acts of incredible courage. Told through the eyes of survivors, firefighters, police, and bystanders, many of whom have never before shared their stories, Goldfarb explores the day’s impact on these participants as well as on the resulting aviation and transit safety measures that have protected us over the decades.

Description:

Ten właśnie aspekt duchowości Newmana wyakcentował w swojej pierwszej encyklice – zresztą bez wątpienia inspirowany ideami wielkiego poprzednika i wybitnego teologa Benedykta XVI – papież Franciszek, pisząc, że rozumiane w ten sposób życie wewnętrzne człowieka – z jednej strony współczesne, z drugiej zaś wieczne – prowadzi do przeżywania wiary w sposób integralny, dojrzały.

Teologia życia duchowego autorstwa Newmana w centrum stawia osobę Chrystusa. John Henry, m.in. z racji przynależności do Kościoła anglikańskiego w pierwszej połowie swojego życia, był w myśleniu, pisarstwie i osobistej modlitwie zdecydowanie chrystocentryczny. Z przyjęcia właśnie takiej perspektywy wypływa jakże fascynująca, zdrowa i przemyślana doktryna mistyczna, którą chciałbym przedstawić w niniejszej książce. Jest ona źródłem modelu duchowości i przewodnikiem po wewnętrznych drogach człowieka napisanym klarownie, bez dwuznaczności, które tak często infekują poszukiwania współczesnych pokoleń. Skoncentrowanie duszy i jej wewnętrznych działań na osobie Chrystusa, postawienie Go w centrum każdego poruszenia duchowego, nadaje ścieżkom pobożności właściwy charakter i niezawodnie prowadzi do zbawienia. „Fundamentem zjednoczenia z Chrystusem nie jest uczucie sprowokowane przez Jego cierpienie, ale przylgnięcie z wiarą do Jego tajemnicy. Dlatego Ewangelie o męce prowadzą raczej do kontemplacji wiary niż do wysiłku emocjonalnego.

When young and popular but untalented rapper Will Smith has a sickness-induced vision of Heaven, everyone is shocked to discover that Heaven in fact resembles a certain theme park in Orlando, Florida, and as news of this fact travels throughout the land, a great grassroots movement erupts to take Will Smith and his family there to confirm whether Heaven is truly a place on Earth, or, more specifically, on a tract of land privately controlled by a publicly traded company.
