Description:

Ever since Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, we have generally become aware of environmental contaminants and their effects on the ecosystem. The findin~ of PCB’s in fish by Soren Jensen in Sweden, the recognition of mirex as contaminant in fish from Lake Ontario, and the discoveries of contaminant laden leachates from dumpsites such as the Love Canal have become milestones in the search for and charac terization of contaminants in our environment. At this time, the problem no longer is so much the identifi cation of contaminants and their sources. Rather, we are now faced with solving questions on the fates and effects of such compounds. This includes the search for mechanisms to deal effectively with the large number of chemicals already found in water, air and biota. One of such time and cost saving scientific avenues is the field of quantitative structure-activity correlations for the prediction of the environmental behavior and effects of compounds.

Description:

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

A settling party from Cincinnati came here in 1796, seven years before Ohio achieved statehood. The names of the original owners of the land resonate on the town’s streets today: Arthur St. Clair, James Wilkinson, Israel Ludlow and the name-giver, Johnathan Dayton. Dayton, a New Jersey politician and major land speculator in Ohio, never set foot in the area but Ludlow laid out the new town. Ludlow is credited with surveying more land in Ohio than any early settler and he got his share of towns and streams named for him as well.

Dayton’s location at the forks of the Great Miami River where the Mad River joined and streams drained from the surrounding hills foretold a future as a shipping center for the rich surrounding farmland. Town pioneers pursued that course early on with the construction of the Dayton-Cincinnati Canal in 1827. The complexion of the community began to change with John Patterson, who once collected tolls on the Miami and Erie Canal. In 1884 Patterson and his brother bought James Riddy’s small business where he manufactured "incorruptible" cash registers. To mass produce the machines for his newly named National Cash Register (NCR) company Patterson needed to recruit highly skilled workers capable of precision workmanship. The term wasn’t in use 125 years ago but Dayton became one of the first high-tech centers in the United States.

There was no higher technology in the waning days of the 19th century than man’s quest for flight and it took two Dayton bicycle machinists, whose only training in aerodynamics came from reading everything they could find on the subject in the Dayton public library, to conquer the skies. Orville and Wilbur Wright established an experimental airplane factory in town, joining a handful of automobile pioneers already operating in Dayton. One mechanic, Charles F. Kettering came to link Dayton’s high-tech industries when he built a quick-starting electric motor for the cash register and then quit his job at NCR to adapt the invention as an automobile self-starter. He went on to found the influential Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company known world-wide as Delco.

While Dayton engineers were busy toppling the barriers of physics they received a reminder of the power of the natural world in 1913 when a four-day downpour sent the muddy waters of the Great Miami roiling over protective levees with the most disastrous flood in the town’s history. The levees were raised and the Miami subdued but the impact on Dayton remains nearly a century later. Many buildings were lost forever, some companies remained and rebuilt in the downtown core and others abandoned the floodplain for other areas, stimulating growth in suburban communities. Our walking tour of "Gem City" will start by the banks of the Great Miami where the river today looks tame and docile…

John Lynch, who was only 17 at that time, established a ferry at a difficult ford in the James River in 1757. Over the years dwellings sprung up on the navigable river near his ferry house. Lynch expanded his enterprises himself in the 1780s when he constructed a tobacco warehouse on his land north of the river. In 1784 the ambitious Lynch petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to authorize a town charter for his little fiefdom. In 1786 his request was granted to establish "a town on the lands of Lynch in the County Campbell."

The new town was raised on tobacco, a variation known as dark leaf tobacco suited for chewing and rolling cigars. Hiogsheads of tobacco from the surrounding farms arrived at the James River and were poled down to Richmond in flat bateaux boats. By the time John Lynch died in 1820 at the age of 80 the town that developed on the hills surrounding his old ferry was well on its way to being the industrial star of southwestern Virginia. Thomas Jefferson wrote, "Lynchburg is perhaps the most rising place in the U.S…. It ranks now next to Richmond in importance…" In the years before the Civil War Lynchburg was among the richest towns per capita in the country.

Tobacco also kickstarted the Lynchburg economic engine following the Civil War. In 1882 Lynchburg native revolutionized the tobacco industry by inventing a cigarette rolling machine. Within five years more than 30,000,000 pounds of tobacco were marketed from Lynchburg. The foundation laid by tobacco led to a thriving trade in iron and steel. Its shoe factories were among the busiest in America. For a time the world’s largest tannin extract plant operated here.

The 1880s to 1930s brought Lynchburg’s greatest prosperity and the downtown area retains a wealth of commercial buildings from this era that we will see on our walking tour but first we will begin where the town began, at the site of John Lynch’s ferry…

"François Victor Malhiot…became an articled clerk to the North West Fur company…his journal published in the Wisconsin Historical Collections recounts experiences…married an Indian woman…settling at Contreceacoueur…and lived there until his deat in 1840." -Wausau (Wisconsin) Daily Herald, Sept. 8, 1931

What was life in Wisconsin like in 1803 for the first white pioneers in the region?

In 1911, the Historical Society of Wisconsin shed some light on life in early Wisconsin by publishing the journal of fur trader François Victor Malhiot (1776-1840) in a short 60-page work titled "A Wisconsin Fur-Trader’s Journal."

Francois Victor Malhiot born in 1776, was 15 when he became an articled clerk to the North West Fur Company. In 1796 he was appointed to the Upper Red River Department , and in the summer of 1804 he was sent to take charge of the post at Lac du Flambeau.

In 1807 he resigned. He married an Indian woman on August 8, 1800, at the fort at the mouth of the Winnipeg River. On leaving the interior he left her with her own people but took with him his half-breed son, Francois Xavier Ignace. Settling at Contreceacouer he educated his son and lived there until his death in 1840. He was known to his relatives and fiends as Erambert.

Malhiot’s Journal shows that two days were spent in canoe journey from Portage (Long) Lake to Lac du Flambeau. The party first made its way by a network of lakes and streams to Turtle Lake, in northwest Vilas County: thence by short portages they reached the Manitowish River; they went eighteen miles down-stream to the Flambeau River, and twenty-four miles to Lac du Flambeau.

Doty, in a letter to Governor Cass, described the route as from the mouth of the Montreal River to Turtle Lake, ‘From where there is a portage one-fourth of a mile to a small pond, thence up the outlet of a small lake one-fourth of a mile, from which a portage of three miles is made to the Old Plantation River. This is descended eighteen miles to the entrance of the Flambeau River, which rises in the lake of the same name, and is twenty four miles long."

Malhiot writes of giving a coat to ‘le Muffle d’Original’ (The Moose’s muzzle). He is believed to be the chief known as Mozoboddo sho succeeded his father Keeshkenum, one of the noted Chippewa chiefs said to have been the first settlers at Lac du Flambeau. Keeshkenum was still alive in 1827, but was very old, and died soon thereafter, when Mozoboddo was invested the chieftainship. He in turn died about 1832 and was succeeded by White Crow. Malhiot traded with Indians from or near what is now Langlade County.
