Description:

I Am Not Sidney Poitier is an irresistible comic novel from the master storyteller Percival Everett, and an irreverent take on race, class, and identity in America

"I was, in life, to be a gambler, a risk-taker, a swashbuckler, a knight. I accepted, then and there, my place in the world. I was a fighter of windmills. I was a chaser of whales. I was Not Sidney Poitier."

Not Sidney Poitier is an amiable young man in an absurd country. The sudden death of his mother orphans him at age eleven, leaving him with an unfortunate name, an uncanny resemblance to the famous actor, and, perhaps more fortunate, a staggering number of shares in the Turner Broadcasting Corporation.

Percival Everett’s hilarious new novel follows Not Sidney’s tumultuous life, as the social hierarchy scrambles to balance his skin color with his fabulous wealth. Maturing under the less-than watchful eye of his adopted foster father, Ted Turner, Not gets arrested in rural Georgia for driving while black, sparks a dinnertable explosion at the home of his manipulative girlfriend, and sleuths a murder case in Smut Eye, Alabama, all while navigating the recurrent communication problem: "What’s your name?" a kid would ask. "Not Sidney," I would say. "Okay, then what is it?"

Description:

This survey highlights Springfield’s beginnings as an industrial oriented settlement growing into a city with an increasingly diversified industrial base well into the 20th century. Discussed in this connection is the role of railroads as a necessary condition to industrial success. As industry grew, commercialism expanded, and became centralized in the downtown. The text traces the city’s viable and lively downtown from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. The background for the decline following World War II is covered, as well as the downtown’s changing role in the modern era. Not all, however, is industry and commerce. The city’s wealth and the wealth of individual citizens led to the construction of many fine buildings of architectural merit as venues for cultural, entertainment, and religious functions. Many of these structures are treated in relation to their cultural functions. Not the lease of the topics discussed is Springfield’s saga with infrastructure problems and their eventual correction.

"As far as I can recall today, our activities were mostly limited to exchanging secret notes in class to notify each other of secret meetings, during which we would devise more ingenious ways of exchanging secret notes. It might seem rather pointless and silly, but now that I’m a grown-up, I know that many Government organizations still work on the same principles, so it can’t have been all that bad…

The short stories included in this collection are like bottles thrown into the vast ocean, each containing a fragment of a universe inside… The Justice League… The Prisoner… The Shadowmen… Madame Atomos… The Red Death… From long-lost Hyperborea to The Village, from ancient Carnac to Apokolips, from Deep Space Nine to the Paris Opera, the walls between the worlds of fiction crumble and fantasies become reality… These legends from Otherwhere and Elsewhen have finally come to rest on the virtual beach of that utopia that stretches fromn Mexico to Canada and welcomes all dreams and dreamers… PACIFICA.

Description:

Ten właśnie aspekt duchowości Newmana wyakcentował w swojej pierwszej encyklice – zresztą bez wątpienia inspirowany ideami wielkiego poprzednika i wybitnego teologa Benedykta XVI – papież Franciszek, pisząc, że rozumiane w ten sposób życie wewnętrzne człowieka – z jednej strony współczesne, z drugiej zaś wieczne – prowadzi do przeżywania wiary w sposób integralny, dojrzały.

Teologia życia duchowego autorstwa Newmana w centrum stawia osobę Chrystusa. John Henry, m.in. z racji przynależności do Kościoła anglikańskiego w pierwszej połowie swojego życia, był w myśleniu, pisarstwie i osobistej modlitwie zdecydowanie chrystocentryczny. Z przyjęcia właśnie takiej perspektywy wypływa jakże fascynująca, zdrowa i przemyślana doktryna mistyczna, którą chciałbym przedstawić w niniejszej książce. Skoncentrowanie duszy i jej wewnętrznych działań na osobie Chrystusa, postawienie Go w centrum każdego poruszenia duchowego, nadaje ścieżkom pobożności właściwy charakter i niezawodnie prowadzi do zbawienia. Dlatego Ewangelie o męce prowadzą raczej do kontemplacji wiary niż do wysiłku emocjonalnego.

Description:

At the mouth of Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie sits the city of Sandusky, Ohio. Described in a 1940 Life magazine article as "perhaps most nearly representative of the whole nation," Sandusky has an eclectic history that is both unique and familiar. It is a city of commerce, of industry, and of recreation. Home to one of the oldest and largest amusement parks in the United States, visited and written about by Charles Dickens, and employed as a campaign stop by numerous presidential candidates, Sandusky has attracted attention throughout its history. This book, featuring vintage photographs from the collections at the Sandusky Library Follett House Museum archives, offers the reader a fascinating view of some of the people and events that helped shape Sandusky. Relive the good times (community celebrations, business successes, and a hometown Miss America) and remember overcoming the hard times (cholera, the Civil War, and the tornado of 1924). The reader will learn about these events and others, gaining an understanding of what made Sandusky the community it is today.
