Description:

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio introduces Evelyn Ryan, an enterprising woman who kept poverty at bay with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the “contest era” of the 1950s and 1960s.

Stepping back into a time when fledgling advertising agencies were active partners with consumers, and everyday people saw possibility in every coupon, Terry Ryan tells how her mother kept the family afloat by writing jingles and contest entries. Mom’s winning ways defied the Church, her alcoholic husband, and antiquated views of housewives. To her, flouting convention was a small price to pay when it came to securing a happy home for her six sons and four daughters. Evelyn, who would surely be a Madison Avenue executive if she were working today, composed her jingles not in the boardroom, but at the ironing board.

By entering contests wherever she found them-TV, radio, newspapers, direct-mail ads-Evelyn Ryan was able to win every appliance her family ever owned, not to mention cars, television sets, bicycles, watches, a jukebox, and even trips to New York, Dallas, and Switzerland. But it wasn’t just the winning that was miraculous; it was the timing. If a toaster died, one was sure to arrive in the mail from a forgotten contest. Days after the bank called in the second mortgage on the house, a call came from the Dr Pepper company: Evelyn was the grand-prize winner in its national contest-and had won enough to pay the bank.

Graced with a rare appreciation for life’s inherent hilarity, Evelyn turned every financial challenge into an opportunity for fun and profit. From her frenetic supermarket shopping spree-worth $3,000 today-to her clever entries worthy of Erma Bombeck, Dorothy Parker, and Ogden Nash, the story of this irrepressible woman whose talents reached far beyond her formidable verbal skills is told in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio with an infectious joy that shows how a winning spirit will triumph over the poverty of circumstance.

A kill-crazy butcher is loose in the Arizona territory and only one man is bold enough to end the mayhem . . .

Johnstone Country. The Killing Starts Now.

Luke Jensen joins a posse of misfits and greenhorns on a murderous manhunt that’s doomed from the start-and there’s no turning back . . .

THE BULLET STOPS HERE

Someone is terrorizing the Arizona border. Burning down ranches. Butchering travelers. Blazing a trail of bloodthirsty raids and robbing the railroads blind. His name is Melichus. A ruthless half-breed outlaw with a mile-long record of cruelties and crimes, he’s the most wanted man in the territory. And the massive price on his head has attracted the attention of every trigger-happy, would-be bounty hunter this side of the Rio Grande. But Luke Jensen knows something they don’t:

The bigger the bounty, the deadlier the prey.

Against his better judgment, Luke accepts an offer from the Great Southern Railroad to lead a posse of hired guns to stop Melichus in his tracks. Problem is, the gunmen are untrained, undisciplined, and unruly. To make matters worse, a meddlesome pair of Pinkertons are along for the ride, too. But the real trouble starts when their team gets caught in a three-sided gunfight with an Apache war party and the Mexican Army. It’s fast becoming the bloodiest manhunt Luke’s ever seen-and the final showdown could be his last . . .

Description:

W wojnie, którą nazwano secesyjną, stanęły naprzeciw siebie demokratyczna, postępowa, uprzemysłowiona Północ i feudalne, zacofane, rolnicze Południe. Autor oddaje im głos – to oni, bardziej niż wodzowie i politycy, zadecydowali o dalszym biegu historii.

Description:

Ten właśnie aspekt duchowości Newmana wyakcentował w swojej pierwszej encyklice – zresztą bez wątpienia inspirowany ideami wielkiego poprzednika i wybitnego teologa Benedykta XVI – papież Franciszek, pisząc, że rozumiane w ten sposób życie wewnętrzne człowieka – z jednej strony współczesne, z drugiej zaś wieczne – prowadzi do przeżywania wiary w sposób integralny, dojrzały.

Teologia życia duchowego autorstwa Newmana w centrum stawia osobę Chrystusa. John Henry, m.in. z racji przynależności do Kościoła anglikańskiego w pierwszej połowie swojego życia, był w myśleniu, pisarstwie i osobistej modlitwie zdecydowanie chrystocentryczny. Z przyjęcia właśnie takiej perspektywy wypływa jakże fascynująca, zdrowa i przemyślana doktryna mistyczna, którą chciałbym przedstawić w niniejszej książce. Skoncentrowanie duszy i jej wewnętrznych działań na osobie Chrystusa, postawienie Go w centrum każdego poruszenia duchowego, nadaje ścieżkom pobożności właściwy charakter i niezawodnie prowadzi do zbawienia. Dlatego Ewangelie o męce prowadzą raczej do kontemplacji wiary niż do wysiłku emocjonalnego.

Description:

A fascinating look at Nazi Germany’s radical development of a manned missile to shoot down Allied bombers.

The Bachem Ba 349 Natter was a secretive, vertical take-off, single-seat rocket interceptor intended to offer high-speed defence of key targets. This radical aircraft offered Luftwaffe an inexpensive means with which to intercept and attack Allied heavy bombers using a vertically-launched, semi-expendable machine built of wood and armed with a nose-mounted ‘honeycomb’ battery of spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets as well as cannon armament. Launched vertically at 36,000ft per minute, the pilot was expected to fly within range of the enemy bombers, fire his rockets at them, ram another bomber, eject and parachute to the ground.

Illustrated with contemporary photographs and stunning commissioned artwork, this study examines this inventive yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the Luftwaffe to defend against the tide of Allied aircraft that was bombing German cities into the ground.
