The text traces the city’s viable and lively downtown from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. The background for the decline following World War II is covered, as well as the downtown’s changing role in the modern era. Not all, however, is industry and commerce. The city’s wealth and the wealth of individual citizens led to the construction of many fine buildings of architectural merit as venues for cultural, entertainment, and religious functions. Many of these structures are treated in relation to their cultural functions. Not the lease of the topics discussed is Springfield’s saga with infrastructure problems and their eventual correction.

It opens in Hollywood in 1914, where Fargo is working temporarily as an actor, of all things, playing a villain in a silent Western movie directed by Thomas Ince. Ince is the only real-life character to make an appearance in this novel; the hero of the picture is fictional, as is a beautiful actress Fargo meets.
Ince wants Fargo to continue making movies and claims that he can be a big star, but Fargo isn’t interested in make-believe. Having lived a life of adventure, he needs the real thing. So when the actress, Jane Deering, asks him to go to Alaska and find out what happened to her husband, who disappeared there several years earlier while prospecting for gold, Fargo agrees without hesitation. He’s less enthusiastic about the idea of Jane coming along with him to look for the missing man, but she convinces him.
Naturally, things don’t go well, and Fargo and Jane wind up in all sorts of danger in the gold fields of the untamed Yukon country. There are vigilantes, a mysterious killer, blizzards, and assorted mushing around on dog sleds and snowshoes. As usual, Benteen spins his yarn in tough, hardboiled prose without a wasted word to be found. He’s one of the best pure action writers I’ve ever run across. ALASKA STEEL is a prime example of a short, gritty adventure novel, and like all of John Benteen’s work it’s well worth reading.

Mało się u nas wie o "zamorskich Chińczykach", którym tu reporter poświęca osobny rozdział, podobnie jak częstuje nas miseczką ryżu, czyli relacją o tym "chlebie żółtego człowieka", pełną ciekawostek i osobliwości. Z Filipin w reporterskim bagażu przywieziona została opowieść o tym archipelagu siedmiu tysięcy wysp. Leyte – jedna z nich, jest tematem osobnego omówienia, ale też "z ludzkiej strony historii".
Potężna porcja informacji o zakamarkach Azji Południowo-Wschodniej, okraszona anegdotą, opowiadaniem o dolach i niedolach ludzi, których wpływ na losy świata jest coraz większy. Reporter jest zarazem autorem zdjęć przybliżających opisywane sprawy i wydarzenia.

I hope this book makes you stop and think about what is happening in America. I know it won’t fall into the right hands to make a difference, or change the minds of the idiotic but – with enough people standing up and screaming when something wrong is happening in the country they love… Sometimes…. Sometimes their voices are heard. Be heard. The year is 2032 and five year old Jacob is opening the biggest gift, beneath the Christmas tree, which is labelled for him. His very first semi-automatic rifle and – he couldn’t be prouder. He smiles to his parents who sit close by. They don’t smile back. Their minds are stuck on earlier events of what should have been a magical day: The moment they found out Jacob was set to be a brother. A second child had never been a part of their "plan". Even if they had wanted one, they knew they couldn’t afford one. More than that, the first pregnancy almost resulted in the death of both mother and child. Neither husband nor wife wished to chance that again… But it wasn’t up to them. She was pregnant and that was that. They had to smile at the news and appear happy and financially stable enough to be able to afford a new addition to the family.
