Description:

In 2003 and 2004, a geomorphic assessment of
streams in 20 watersheds in the Duluth, Minn., area
was conducted to identify and summarize geomorphic
characteristics, processes, disturbance mechanisms, and
potential responses to disturbance. Methods used to assess
the streams included watershed characterization, descriptions
of segment slopes and valley types, historical aerial
photograph interpretation, and rapid field assessments and
intensive field surveys of stream reaches. Geomorphic conditions
were summarized into a segment-scale classification
with 15 categories mainly based on drainage-network
position and slope, and, secondarily, based on geologic
setting, valley type, and dominant geomorphic processes.
Main causes of geomorphic disturbance included historical
logging and agriculture, and ongoing urban development,
human-caused channel alterations, road and storm
sewer drainage, ditching, hiking trails, and gravel pits or
quarries.

Description:

A map-based analysis of the Second Bull Run Campaign, detailing troop movements, battles, and strategies with full-color cartography and insightful commentary.

The Maps of Second Bull Run: An Atlas of the Second Bull Run (Manassas) Campaign from the Formation of the Army of Virginia Through Chantilly, June 26-September 1, 1862 continues Bradley M. Gottfried’s efforts to study and illustrate the major campaigns of the Civil War. This is the tenth book in the ongoing Savas Beatie Military Atlas Series.

President Abraham Lincoln’s frustration with George B. McClellan’s inability to defeat Robert E. Lee and capture Richmond dramatically increased after the unsuccessful Seven Days’ Battles. In response, Lincoln combined three small armies into the new Army of Virginia and placed it under Maj. Gen. John Pope, who had overseen several successes in the Western Theater.

Pope’s aggressiveness and McClellan’s passivity on the Peninsula convinced Lee to send Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s wing of the Army of Northern Virginia to confront Pope. A bloody battle at Cedar Mountain on August 9 halted Pope’s move south, and Jackson’s raid on the vast stores at Manassas Junction triggered another confrontation, this time at Kettle Run.

When McClellan’s troops abandoned the Peninsula, Lee moved his other wing under James Longstreet rapidly north. Pope missed an opportunity to prevent the junction of Lee’s wings by not stopping Longstreet at Thoroughfare Gap.

The battle of Second Bull Run began on the evening of August 28 when Jackson tangled with Union troops at the Brawner Farm. Pope spent much of the next day hammering Jackson’s front, with no idea that Longstreet was arriving on the field. The Union assaults continued on August 30 until Longstreet launched a massive assault that rolled up the Union left flank and collapsed Pope’s army. The retreat was briefly interrupted by some of Jackson’s units at Chantilly, which ended the campaign.

The Maps of Second Bull Run plows new ground by breaking down the entire campaign into 24 map sets or “action sections,” enriched with 122 detailed full-page color maps. These cartographic originals bore down to the regimental and battery level. They include the march to and from the battlefields and virtually every significant event in between, including cavalry actions. At least two-and as many as ten-maps accompany each map set. Keyed to each piece of cartography is a full-facing page of detailed text describing the units, personalities, movements, and combat (including quotes from eyewitnesses) depicted on the accompanying map, all of which make the cavalry actions come alive.

This presentation allows readers to easily find a map and text on any portion of the sprawling campaign. Serious students will appreciate the extensive endnotes and complete orders of battle and take the book with them to the battlefields. A final bonus is that the maps unlock every other book or article written on any aspect of the campaign.

Perfect for the easy chair or for stomping the hallowed grounds, The Maps of Second Bull Run is a seminal work that belongs on the bookshelf of every serious and casual student of the battle.

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

A settling party from Cincinnati came here in 1796, seven years before Ohio achieved statehood. The names of the original owners of the land resonate on the town’s streets today: Arthur St. Clair, James Wilkinson, Israel Ludlow and the name-giver, Johnathan Dayton. Dayton, a New Jersey politician and major land speculator in Ohio, never set foot in the area but Ludlow laid out the new town. Ludlow is credited with surveying more land in Ohio than any early settler and he got his share of towns and streams named for him as well.

Dayton’s location at the forks of the Great Miami River where the Mad River joined and streams drained from the surrounding hills foretold a future as a shipping center for the rich surrounding farmland. Town pioneers pursued that course early on with the construction of the Dayton-Cincinnati Canal in 1827. The complexion of the community began to change with John Patterson, who once collected tolls on the Miami and Erie Canal. In 1884 Patterson and his brother bought James Riddy’s small business where he manufactured "incorruptible" cash registers. To mass produce the machines for his newly named National Cash Register (NCR) company Patterson needed to recruit highly skilled workers capable of precision workmanship. The term wasn’t in use 125 years ago but Dayton became one of the first high-tech centers in the United States.

There was no higher technology in the waning days of the 19th century than man’s quest for flight and it took two Dayton bicycle machinists, whose only training in aerodynamics came from reading everything they could find on the subject in the Dayton public library, to conquer the skies. Orville and Wilbur Wright established an experimental airplane factory in town, joining a handful of automobile pioneers already operating in Dayton. One mechanic, Charles F. Kettering came to link Dayton’s high-tech industries when he built a quick-starting electric motor for the cash register and then quit his job at NCR to adapt the invention as an automobile self-starter. He went on to found the influential Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company known world-wide as Delco.

While Dayton engineers were busy toppling the barriers of physics they received a reminder of the power of the natural world in 1913 when a four-day downpour sent the muddy waters of the Great Miami roiling over protective levees with the most disastrous flood in the town’s history. The levees were raised and the Miami subdued but the impact on Dayton remains nearly a century later. Many buildings were lost forever, some companies remained and rebuilt in the downtown core and others abandoned the floodplain for other areas, stimulating growth in suburban communities. Our walking tour of "Gem City" will start by the banks of the Great Miami where the river today looks tame and docile…

Description:

The upper Yuba River watershed is a heavily managed
basin recovering from hydraulic gold mining that occurred in
the mid 1800s to early 1900s. The Upper Yuba River Studies
Program (UYRSP), a component of the California Bay-Delta
Authority (CBDA) Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP), is
evaluating options for introducing spring-run Chinook salmon
and steelhead trout upstream of Englebright Dam, which
is located in the foothills of the northwestern Sierra Nevada,
California (fig. 1). This report is one product of on-going studies
by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (Childs and others,
2003; Flint and others, 2004; Snyder and others, 2004a, 2004b,
2004c; Curtis and others, 2005), which provide a comprehensive
analysis of sediment sources, transport, and storage in the
upper Yuba River watershed. The USGS is also investigating
water quality in the Yuba River watershed and sediment quality
in Englebright Lake, with an emphasis on mercury contamination
and bioaccumulation (Alpers and others, 2004; Slotten,
2004).

"As far as I can recall today, our activities were mostly limited to exchanging secret notes in class to notify each other of secret meetings, during which we would devise more ingenious ways of exchanging secret notes. It might seem rather pointless and silly, but now that I’m a grown-up, I know that many Government organizations still work on the same principles, so it can’t have been all that bad…

The short stories included in this collection are like bottles thrown into the vast ocean, each containing a fragment of a universe inside… The Justice League… The Prisoner… The Shadowmen… Madame Atomos… The Red Death… From long-lost Hyperborea to The Village, from ancient Carnac to Apokolips, from Deep Space Nine to the Paris Opera, the walls between the worlds of fiction crumble and fantasies become reality… These legends from Otherwhere and Elsewhen have finally come to rest on the virtual beach of that utopia that stretches fromn Mexico to Canada and welcomes all dreams and dreamers… PACIFICA.
