Description:

Joyce Carol Oates has received acclaim from literary audiences for decades. In these two one-act plays she demonstrates her talent as a playwright. Performed by a full cast, these plays are produced by L.A. Theatre Works. Starring Edward Asner, Stephanie Dunnam, and more, both plays concern the trials and tribulation of contemporary Americans in a fast-changing world. Filled with biting political commentary and dark absurdism, these plays are a must for any fan of one-acts. Stephanie Dunnam’s voice in particular shines in these short plays; it’s clear why she has had such success on stage.

Description:

"The World’s Greatest Books – Volume 06". An enterprise such as THE WORLD’S GREATEST BOOKS is to be judged from two different standpoints. It may be judged with respect to its specific achievement–the material of which it consists; or it may be judged with regard to its general utility in the scheme of literature to which it belongs. In an age which is sometimes ironically called "remarkable" for its commercialism, nothing has been more truly remarkable than the advancement in learning as well as in material progress; and of all the instruments that have contributed to this end, none has been more effective, perhaps, than the practical popularisation of literature. In THE WORLD’S GREATEST BOOKS an attempt has been made to effect a compendium of the world’s best literature in a form that shall be at once accessible to every one and still faithful to its originals; or, in other words, it has been sought to allow the original author to tell his own story over again in his own language, but in the shortest possible space. However, we are aware that even THE WORLD’S GREATEST BOOKS will not escape the criticism of a small class of people who will profess to object to this, as to any kind of interference with an author’s original–in reply to which it can only be said that such objections are seldom, if ever, made in the true interests of learning, or in a genuine spirit of inquiry, and too often only proceed from a knowledge of books or love of them which goes no deeper than their title-page. The selections in THE WORLD’S GREATEST BOOKS have been collected, and are alphabetically arranged, in ten different divisions,–namely, Fiction, Lives and Letters, History, Religion, Philosophy, Economics, Science, Poetry and Drama, Travel and Adventure and Miscellaneous Literature. An important additional feature of the work is the brief, yet highly critical biographical and bibliographical note which accompanies every author and every selection throughout the twenty volumes. To this must be also added the not less important Introductories, and other explanations written by experts, which often accompany the selections in the text–cardinal examples of which will be found in particular in the section of Religion of this work, in the articles dealing with such subjects as the Book of the Dead, Brahmanism, Confucianism, the Koran, Talmud, etc.

Description:

In this provocative history, James B. Wood challenges the received wisdom that Japan’s defeat in the Pacific was historically inevitable. He argues instead that it was only when the Japanese military prematurely abandoned its original sound strategic plan―to secure the resources Japan needed and establish a viable defensible perimeter for the Empire―that the Allies were able to regain the initiative and lock Japanese forces into a war of attrition they were not prepared to fight. The book persuasively shows how the Japanese army and navy had both the opportunity and the capability to have fought a different and more successful war in the Pacific that could have influenced the course and outcome of World War II. It is therefore a study both of Japanese defeat and of what was needed to achieve a potential Japanese victory, or at the very least, to avoid total ruin.

Wood’s argument does not depend on signal individual historical events or dramatic accidents. Instead it examines how familiar events could have become more complicated or problematic under different, but nevertheless historically possible, conditions due to changes in the complex interaction of strategic and operational factors over time. Wood concludes that fighting a different war was well within the capacities of imperial Japan. He underscores the fact that the enormous task of achieving total military victory over Japan would have been even more difficult, perhaps too difficult, if the Japanese had waged a different war and the Allies had not fought as skillfully as they did. If Japan had traveled that alternate military road, the outcome of the Pacific War could have differed significantly from that we know so well―and, perhaps a little too complacently, accept.

Description:

Ten właśnie aspekt duchowości Newmana wyakcentował w swojej pierwszej encyklice – zresztą bez wątpienia inspirowany ideami wielkiego poprzednika i wybitnego teologa Benedykta XVI – papież Franciszek, pisząc, że rozumiane w ten sposób życie wewnętrzne człowieka – z jednej strony współczesne, z drugiej zaś wieczne – prowadzi do przeżywania wiary w sposób integralny, dojrzały.

Teologia życia duchowego autorstwa Newmana w centrum stawia osobę Chrystusa. John Henry, m.in. z racji przynależności do Kościoła anglikańskiego w pierwszej połowie swojego życia, był w myśleniu, pisarstwie i osobistej modlitwie zdecydowanie chrystocentryczny. Z przyjęcia właśnie takiej perspektywy wypływa jakże fascynująca, zdrowa i przemyślana doktryna mistyczna, którą chciałbym przedstawić w niniejszej książce. Skoncentrowanie duszy i jej wewnętrznych działań na osobie Chrystusa, postawienie Go w centrum każdego poruszenia duchowego, nadaje ścieżkom pobożności właściwy charakter i niezawodnie prowadzi do zbawienia. Dlatego Ewangelie o męce prowadzą raczej do kontemplacji wiary niż do wysiłku emocjonalnego.

Description:

"As far as I can recall today, our activities were mostly limited to exchanging secret notes in class to notify each other of secret meetings, during which we would devise more ingenious ways of exchanging secret notes. It might seem rather pointless and silly, but now that I’m a grown-up, I know that many Government organizations still work on the same principles, so it can’t have been all that bad…

The short stories included in this collection are like bottles thrown into the vast ocean, each containing a fragment of a universe inside… The Justice League… The Prisoner… The Shadowmen… Madame Atomos… The Red Death… From long-lost Hyperborea to The Village, from ancient Carnac to Apokolips, from Deep Space Nine to the Paris Opera, the walls between the worlds of fiction crumble and fantasies become reality… These legends from Otherwhere and Elsewhen have finally come to rest on the virtual beach of that utopia that stretches fromn Mexico to Canada and welcomes all dreams and dreamers… PACIFICA.
