Description:

Starting in my first year as a State Representative I wrote an article every week within Illinois’ 89th District. It was a great district with roughly 60-40 rural-to-urban making up the 105,000 citizens. My effort with these articles was simply to inform the citizens what was happening politically in their District. I started as a neophyte, and I wanted them to be informed with what I learned from serving. I saw the position as an opportunity to help the citizens of the district. I certainly lean conservative, but my efforts were always to represent the 89th district as best I could without political bias. When I started writing my articles, shortly after being elected in November 2002, I marveled at how well they were received. I was not aware of any representatives or senators who had a weekly column at that time, and I believe that mine were the impetus for several others in years to come. My effort with this book, and by utilizing the articles that I wrote throughout my eleven-year journey as a state representative, will be a "primer" for those wanting to gain knowledge of the position for whatever reason. My hope is also for you to understand why I literally loved my job. Having been an FBI Agent for 28 years prior to becoming a state representative I had always believed that I had had the best job in the world and my book "NOT IN MY WILDEST DREAMS, MEMOIRS OF A VETERAN FBI AGENT" I believe reflects my love for the job. But here I am, arguably loving this job even more than my years as a Special Agent.

Description:

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio introduces Evelyn Ryan, an enterprising woman who kept poverty at bay with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the “contest era” of the 1950s and 1960s.

Stepping back into a time when fledgling advertising agencies were active partners with consumers, and everyday people saw possibility in every coupon, Terry Ryan tells how her mother kept the family afloat by writing jingles and contest entries. Mom’s winning ways defied the Church, her alcoholic husband, and antiquated views of housewives. To her, flouting convention was a small price to pay when it came to securing a happy home for her six sons and four daughters. Evelyn, who would surely be a Madison Avenue executive if she were working today, composed her jingles not in the boardroom, but at the ironing board.

By entering contests wherever she found them-TV, radio, newspapers, direct-mail ads-Evelyn Ryan was able to win every appliance her family ever owned, not to mention cars, television sets, bicycles, watches, a jukebox, and even trips to New York, Dallas, and Switzerland. But it wasn’t just the winning that was miraculous; it was the timing. If a toaster died, one was sure to arrive in the mail from a forgotten contest. Days after the bank called in the second mortgage on the house, a call came from the Dr Pepper company: Evelyn was the grand-prize winner in its national contest-and had won enough to pay the bank.

Graced with a rare appreciation for life’s inherent hilarity, Evelyn turned every financial challenge into an opportunity for fun and profit. From her frenetic supermarket shopping spree-worth $3,000 today-to her clever entries worthy of Erma Bombeck, Dorothy Parker, and Ogden Nash, the story of this irrepressible woman whose talents reached far beyond her formidable verbal skills is told in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio with an infectious joy that shows how a winning spirit will triumph over the poverty of circumstance.

Jett Olsson isn’t looking for anything serious and she’s not looking for anything at all, so why does it seem so hard to keep it professional?

I love my life-the thrill of being on the ice as part of the Arizona Vengeance, the rush of winning, the adoration of the fans. And if that adoration means I don’t have to spend the night alone, well even better. I’m content being single and always ready to mingle.

But the day Emory Holland walks into a Vengeance team meeting my attention is caught like never before. I can tell right away she’s full of smarts and sass, and the fact that she’s hot as hell sure doesn’t hurt either. She immediately shuts down my advances, so I opt for the road less traveled-straight to the friend zone.

My approach works like a charm, and when she invites me into her bed for a no-strings, friends-with-benefits arrangement, I vow to give her everything I have. She’s been hurt before, and if I’m able to help her heal while giving her a spectacularly satisfying time *pats self on back*, then I’ll be happy.

Or at least that’s the lie I keep telling myself as the time ticks down on the final buzzer of our "relationship". Now the real question is, can I score the winning goal in a game neither of us realized we were playing?

When love and business mix, can Robin have her cake and eat it too?

Robin is far too engrossed in running her business to have time for men. She made her living off other people’s happy-ever-afters, but that didn’t mean she believed in them for herself. But after bumping into the sexy man that had her knees failing, she figured she’d have a good time and enjoy herself. She hadn’t planned on the relationship jeopardizing everything she held dear.

George is a love-em-and-leave-em kind of guy. Sure, most of the Jordan men had been, but nowadays, all of his cousins were getting hitched. So when the pretty wedding coordinator caught his eye, he figured he’d enjoy a quick tryst. He hadn’t counted on her being the one.

She’d have to be a fool not to fall for the new hunky cop in town.

Kate didn’t really want to be back in her hometown of Pride. But thanks to a recent injury and surgery which had ended her very brief dancing career, she was stuck at home. In her mind, this move was temporary, until she ran into the new law in town. What was someone that good looking doing in such a small town?

Tom had always dreamed of being a cop and picks a job in the picturesque town along the coast in hopes that he could escape his dark past. But the sleepy little town holds some big secrets and the pretty dancer he meets on the beach one night isn’t the only surprise he finds.

Will his secrets keep her from falling for the free-spirited billionaire?

Brook Masters has always known what she wanted. To follow in her father’s footsteps and be in the Coast Guard. But being daddy’s little girl has a few drawbacks. Especially when you live in a small town where everyone knows you.

James Ryder is a wanderer. A beach bum. A man with only a dog and an old travel van to his name. He likes it like that. Until fate would have him quite literally falling at the feet of the most beautiful soul he’d ever met.

Description:

In 1983, when Evans came up with the vision for the first-ever memorial on the National Mall to honor women who’d worn a military uniform, she wouldn’t be deterred. She remembered not only her sister veterans, but also the hundreds of young wounded men she had cared for, as she expressed during a Congressional hearing in Washington, D.C.: "Women didn’t have to enter military service, but we stepped up to serve believing we belonged with our brothers-in-arms and now we belong with them at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. If they belong there, we belong there. We were there for them then. We mattered."

In the end, those wounded soldiers who had survived proved to be there for their sisters-in-arms, joining their fight for honor in Evans’ journey of combating unforeseen bureaucratic obstacles and facing mean-spirited opposition. Her impassioned story of serving in Vietnam is a crucial backstory to her fight to honor the women she served beside. She details the gritty and high-intensity experience of being a nurse in the midst of combat and becomes an unlikely hero who ultimately serves her country again as a formidable force in her daunting quest for honor and justice.
