Description:

"Green Stories" prize winner Fairhaven – A Novel of Climate Optimism follows the path of Grace Chan, born in Penang, Malaysia. She has experienced the dire consequences of climate change personally and is taking action borne both of hope and desperation.

Her story explores the implications, both at the global scale and and on a deeply personal level, of our common dilemma and the possibilities that are open to us.

Unlike most ‘cli fi’ novels, which present apocalyptic scenarios for the future, Fairhaven envisions in an engrossing, readily-accessible story for general readers how a range of practical climate adaptation and mitigation solutions could work when fully implemented.

Fairhaven opens in 2036 as Grace is days away from assuming office as the President of the newly-formed Ocean Independent State. Driving along the edge of a Penang dyke to clear her mind, her truck crashes and she comes close to death as the tide rises. As she reviews her life, the reader comes to understand what has brought her (and the world) to this point, how she will move forward, and the surprising role that ordinary individuals can play.

Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1071652370

Description:

The aim of this text is to present fundamental ideas, results, and techniques concisely, mainly in matrix theory with some in linear algebra. The book contains ten chapters covering various topics ranging from rank, similarity, and special matrices, to Schur complements, matrix normality, and majorization. Each chapter focuses on the results, techniques, and methods that are beautiful, interesting, and representative, followed by carefully selected problems. Major changes in this third edition include:

  • expansion of topics such as eigenvalue continuity, matrix functions, nonnegative matrices, matrix norms, and majorization
  • inclusion of more than 200 examples and more than 1500 exercises
  • emphasis on basic techniques and skills for partitioned matrices through which a variety of matrix results and matrix inequalities are shown
  • showcase of many majorization-type inequalities for diagonal entries, eigenvalues, and singular values of matrices.

This book can be used as a textbook or a supplement for a linear algebra and matrix theory class or a seminar for advanced undergraduate or graduate students. Prerequisites include a solid background in elementary linear algebra and calculus. The text can also serve as a reference for researchers in algebra, matrix analysis, operator theory, statistics, computer science, engineering, operations research, economics, and other scientific areas.
From reviews of the second edition:
The author has made a valuable contribution to the textbook literature on matrix theory, and his work will be appreciated by students and teachers of the subject. . is recommended reading for all those wishing to acquaint themselves with basic matrix theory.- Vicenţiu D. Rădulescu, Zentralblatt MATH
In many places several different proofs are presented for a theorem. This causes the book to be very attractive and readable. This book is useful for researchers as well as graduate students working in linear algebra, operator theory, statistics, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, economics, and other disciplines.

Description:

These lectures explain basic concepts of neural networks at a level requiring only very rudimentary knowledge of Python. With simplicity in mind, the codes for various algorithms are written from scratch, i.e. without any use of dedicated higher-level libraries. That way one can explicitly follow all the programming steps. A great advantage of the text, written in the form of an executable Jupyter book, is that the reader can run the source codes in the cloud, modifying them and playing around, with no installation required: https://bronwojtek.github.io/neuralnets-in-raw-python/docs/index.html,

Description:

This is the long-awaited third edition of this highly regarded comparative overview of corporate law. This edition has been comprehensively revised and updated to reflect the profound changes in corporate law and governance practices that have taken place since the previous edition. These
include numerous regulatory changes following the financial crisis of 2007-09 and the changing landscape of governance, especially in the US, with the ever more central role of institutional investors as (active) owners of corporations. The geographic scope of the coverage has been broadened to
include an important emerging economy, Brazil. In addition, the book now incorporates analysis of the burgeoning use of corporate law to protect the interests of external constituencies without any contractual relationship to a company, in an attempt to tackle broader social and economic problems.
The authors start from the premise that corporations (or companies) in all jurisdictions share the same key legal attributes: legal personality, limited liability, delegated management, transferable shares, and investor ownership. Businesses using the corporate form give rise to three basic types of
agency problems: those between managers and shareholders as a class; controlling shareholders and minority shareholders; and shareholders as a class and other corporate constituencies, such as corporate creditors and employees. After identifying the common set of legal strategies used to address
these agency problems and discussing their interaction with enforcement institutions, The Anatomy of Corporate Law illustrates how a number of core jurisdictions around the world deploy such strategies. In so doing, the book highlights the many commonalities across jurisdictions and reflects on the
reasons why they may differ on specific issues.

The analysis covers the basic governance structure of the corporation, including the powers of the board of directors and the shareholder meeting, both when management and when a dominant shareholder is in control. It then analyses the role of corporate law in shaping labor relationships, protection
of external stakeholders, relationships with creditors, related-party transactions, fundamental corporate actions such as mergers and charter amendments, takeovers, and the regulation of capital markets.

The Anatomy of Corporate Law has established itself as the leading book in the field of comparative corporate law. Across the world, students and scholars at various stages in their careers, from undergraduate law students to well-established authorities in the field, routinely consult this book as
a starting point for their inquiries.
