Description:

Jacqueline Woodson, one of today’s finest writers, tells the moving story of her childhood in mesmerizing verse.

Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child’s soul as she searches for her place in the world. Woodson’s eloquent poetry also reflects the joy of finding her voice through writing stories, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child. Her love of stories inspired her and stayed with her, creating the first sparks of the gifted writer she was to become.

    Description:

Edited by Oscar Gelderblom, Utrecht University, The Netherlands

In the first half of the seventeenth century the Dutch Republic emerged as one of Europe’s leading maritime powers. The political and military leadership of this small country was based on large-scale borrowing from an increasingly wealthy middle class of merchants, manufacturers and regents This volume presents the first comprehensive account of the political economy of the Dutch republic from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. Building on earlier scholarship and extensive new evidence it tackles two main issues: the effect of political revolution on property rights and public finance, and the ability of the nation to renegotiate issues of taxation and government borrowing in changing political circumstances.

The essays in this volume chart the Republic’s rise during the seventeenth century, and its subsequent decline as other European nations adopted the Dutch financial model and warfare bankrupted the state in the eighteenth century. By following the United Provinces’s financial ability to respond to the changing national and international circumstances across a three-hundred year period, much can be learned not only about the Dutch experience, but the wider European implications as well.

Contents: Preface; Introduction, Oscar Gelderblom; Emulating success: contemporary views of the Dutch economy before 1800, Erik S. Reinert; Holland’s new fiscal regime, 1572-1576, James D. Tracy; The efficiency of taxation in Holland, Wantje Fritschy; The political economy of bread in the Dutch republic, Jan de Vries; Mutual advantages: state bankers as brokers between the city of Amsterdam and the Dutch republic, Marjolein ‘t Hart; Tax morale and citizenship in the Dutch republic, Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden; Rural development and landownership in Holland, c.1400-1650, Bas van Bavel; Financing water management in Rijnland, 1500-1800, Milja van Tielhof; The organization of long-distance trade in England and the Dutch republic, 1550-1650, Oscar Gelderblom; The Union of Utrecht, tariff barriers and the interprovincial beer trade in the Dutch republic, Richard Yntema; Local particularism challenged, 1795-1813, Thomas Poell; Index.

About the Editor: Dr Oscar Gelderblom is based at Utrecht University, The Netherlands.

Reviews: ‘. the entire collection is characterised by a high level of quality (not always a given with these types of enterprises). The range of contributions from the history of economic thought, to rural development, to tariff policy, to the financing of water management projects, to the financing of long distance trading ventures, offers the reader a comprehensive look at the political economy of the Dutch Republic.’ Itinerario

‘This long-awaited volume should be a starting point for anyone who requires a grounding in the fiscal history of the Dutch Republic. . The result is that rare collection of essays that delivers far more than it promises.’ EH.NET

‘[The volume's] contributors and editor are to be applauded from bringing a fascinating paradox, the local roots of global power, to a wider audience.’ Sixteenth Century Journa

    Description:

First published in 1914 and reissued with a new introduction in 1992, Work and Wealth is a seminal vision of Hobson’s liberal utopian ideals, which desired to demonstrate how economic and social reform could transform existing society into one in which the majority of the population, as opposed to a small elite, could find fulfillment.
Hobson attacked conventional economic wisdom which made a division between the cost of production and the utility derived from consumption. Far from being necesarily arduous, Hobson argued that work had the potential to bring about immense utility and enrichment. The qualitative, humanist work argues in favour of a new form of capitalism to minimise cost and maximise utility.

    Description:

The main reason people don’t act like Jesus is because they don’t think like Jesus. Discover the seven core questions that Christians must be able to answer biblically in order to live a transformed life.
The latest data from researcher George Barna’s polls across America shows that we are confused by the issues that confront us today. We find ourselves wrestling with what is right and wrong. Some of us cut ethical corners and don’t even know it. We often base our actions on what feels right or keeps people happy rather than on what is best or true.
All because, Barna concludes, we lack an active, clear belief system based on solid, scriptural principles.
Now more than ever, we need a way of life that brings us clarity in chaos, peace in the problems, and boldness in the bad times. We need a new way of seeing-a biblical perspective that guides our every thought and action.
What is a biblical perspective on life? To put it simply, Barna says, it is a "way of dealing with the world so that we act like Jesus, twenty-four hours a day, because we think like Jesus. It’s like wearing a pair of eyeglasses that enable us to see things differently, to see things from God’s point of view, and to respond to these perceptions in the way He prescribes."
    Think Like Jesus:

  • Uncovers the seven core beliefs of Christianity necessary for developing a strong Christian worldview
  • Provides a firm explanation of why Christians believe what we believe
  • Includes detailed statistics and polls on where Americans agree with the Bible on key topics
  • Exposes causes of concern in modern Christianity through the misalignment of key beliefs
Would you like to simplify your life, shore up your moral foundations, and strengthen your Christian witness? Think Like Jesus can help you chart a path that will allow you to make a difference for eternity in your home, your job, your church, and your community.

    Description:

First published in 1955 as U.S. Department of Agriculture Handbook No. 73, this highly popular guide presents sound, time-tested principles for wood-frame house construction, complete with expert advice on selecting suitable building materials. For this edition, it has been completely revised and updated to incorporate advances in home building brought about by the availability of new materials, use of more manufactured components, and changes in construction techniques. Chapter 1 covers the preliminaries that should be considered or dealt with before beginning construction ― financial planning, site selection, design, etc. Chapters 2-4 discuss laying the groundwork (including foundations, footings, and retaining walls), framing and closing in ― describing each step in the order it is usually completed. Chapters 5-7 describe later tasks that don’t necessarily have to be done in the order they are presented. Topics include porches, decks, interior wall framing, plumbing, heating and electric installation, flooring, interior finishes, cabinets, and more. Chapter 8 covers special topics often associated with wood-frame construction: protection against decay and termites, energy conservation, all-weather construction, maintenance and repair, and other matters. Technical notes, an annotated list of suggestions for additional reading, and a glossary round out the book. Clear, thorough, and easy to follow, with nearly 200 helpful illustrations, Wood-Frame House Construction offers a detailed, informative guide to construction techniques invaluable for the do-it-yourselfer or as a review for the professional.
