Description:

The battle for the World Chess Championship has witnessed numerous titanic struggles which have engaged the interest not only of the chess enthusiasts but also of the public at large. The chessboard is the ultimate mental battleground and the world champions themselves are supreme intellectual gladiators. This magnificent compilation of play from the 1960s through to the 1970s forms the basis of the third part of Garry Kasparov’s long-awaited definitive history of the World Chess Championship. Garry Kasparov, who is universally acclaimed as the greatest chess player ever, subjects the play from this era to a rigorous analysis-the examination being enhanced by the use of the latest chess software. This volume features the play of champions Tigran Petrosian (1963-1969) and Boris Spassky (1969-1972). However, this book is more than just a compilation of play from the greats of this era. Kasparov’s biographies of these champions place them in a fascinating historical, political, and cultural context. Kasparov explains how each champion brought his own distinctive style to the chessboard and enriched the theory of the game with new ideas.

Description:

This book brings together the two greatest names in the history of chess. The author, Garry Kasparov, is the world number one and, by common consent, the greatest player ever. The subject of the book, Bobby Fischer, is the only American to have become world champion and is probably the greatest natural talent the world has ever seen.In the period between 1955 and 1972 Fischer, more or less single-handedly, took on the might of the Soviet Chess Empire, and won. During this time Fischer scored astonishing successes the like of which had not been seen before. These included 11/11 in the 1963/64 US Championship and match victories (en route to the World Championship) by the score of 6-0 against two of the strongest players in the world, Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen. The climax of Fischer’s campaign was his unforgettable match win in Reykjavik in 1972 against Boris Spassky.Fischer is almost equally well-known for his temperamental behaviour away from the board, as his play on it. He made extreme demands of all those around him including tournament organisers. When these demands were not met he often refused to play. The 1972 match against Spassky required the intervention of no less than Henry Kissinger to smooth things over. In 1975 when he was due to defend his title against Anatoly Karpov, Fischer was completely unable to agree terms with FIDE (the World Chess Federation) and was defaulted. After this he more or less gave up chess, playing only once, a ‘return’ match against Spassky in 1992.In this book, a must for all serious chessplayers, Kasparov analyses deeply Fischer’s greatest games and assesses the legacy of this great American genius.

Like C.S. Lewis before them, the contributors to this book insist on a proper scepticism concerning many of the presuppositions of modern thought. They are not opposed to the need to develop and adapt theological ideas. But they show that the central core of the faith has a timeless resilience.

Film Ridleya Scotta z 1992 roku potwierdził ocenę międzynarodowych znawców filmu: Łowca androidów , oparty na genialnym i niepokojącym arcydziele science fiction Philipa K. Dicka Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, jest najbardziej gęstym wizualnie, wymagającym tematycznie i wpływowym science fiction film, jaki kiedykolwiek powstał.

Ta poprawiona i rozszerzona edycja Future Noir zawiera:

Eksploracja historii Blade Runner: The Final Cut i jej kinowej premiery w 2007 roku
Spojrzenie z bliska na długo oczekiwaną kontynuację Blade Runner 2049
Wywiad z Harrisonem Fordem z 2007 roku dostępny dla amerykańskich czytelników
Ekskluzywne wywiady z Rutgerem Hauerem i Seanem Youngiem

Rediscover the groundbreaking magic of Blade Runner with this revised and updated edition of the classic guide to Ridley Scott’s transformative film-and published in anticipation of its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, premiering October 2017 and starring Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, and Harrison Ford.

Ridley Scott’s 1992 "Director’s Cut" confirmed the international film cognoscenti’s judgment: Blade Runner, based on Philip K. Dick’s brilliant and troubling science fiction masterpiece Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, is the most visually dense, thematically challenging, and influential science fiction film ever made. Future Noir offers a deeper understanding of this cult phenomenon that is storytelling and visual filmmaking at its best.

In this intensive, intimate and anything-but-glamorous behind-the-scenes account, film insider and cinephile Paul M. Sammon explores how Ridley Scott purposefully used his creative genius to transform the work of science fiction’s most uncompromising author into a critical sensation, a commercial success, and a cult classic that would reinvent the genre. Sammon reveals how the making of the original Blade Runner was a seven-year odyssey that would test the stamina and the imagination of writers, producers, special effects wizards, and the most innovative art directors and set designers in the industry at the time it was made. This revised and expanded edition of Future Noir includes:

An overview of Blade Runner’s impact on moviemaking and its acknowledged significance in popular culture since the book’s original publication
An exploration of the history of Blade Runner: The Final Cut and its theatrical release in 2007
An up-close look at its long-awaited sequel Blade Runner 2049
A 2007 interview with Harrison Ford now available to American readers
Exclusive interviews with Rutger Hauer and Sean Young
A fascinating look at the ever-shifting interface between commerce and art, illustrated with production photos and stills, Future Noir provides an eye-opening and enduring look at modern moviemaking, the business of Hollywood, and one of the greatest films of all time.

Early in 1941, having just seen off at Euston Station the two young men whom she has loved for the best part of her seventeen years, Juno Marlowe is hurrying down a London street with her ill-fitting shoes in her hands. Aeroplanes thunder overhead; a battery of guns opens up. When a stick of bombs falls she cowers, then takes to her heels in flight. She is rescued from this nightmare by a gaunt stranger who offers her the protection of his house. Given this respite from the bleakness of having no home and no family to turn to, June encounters first tragedy, then a series of events that take her to a house in the West Country and the blosssoming of an English spring into which war only occasionally intrudes. Here she may find peace; here she will no longer be part of the furniture.
