Description:

The breech-loading, single-shot .458in Martini-Henry rifle has become a symbol of both the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the numerous battles in Egypt and the Sudan in 1884-85, but continued to be used by both British and colonial troops well into the 20th century. Its invention and introduction into British service were in direct response to the success of the Prussian Dreyse needle gun, which demonstrated that the breech-loading rifle offered faster loading, improved accuracy and superior range; significantly, the weapon could be loaded and fired from a prone position, thus offering the rifleman greater security on the battlefield. Due to the longevity of service, many Martini-Henry rifles survive today, both in museums and in private collections, and the weapon is highly prized by shooting enthusiasts. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and an array of arresting first-hand accounts and written by an authority on warfare in the Victorian era, this engaging study tells the story of the powerful Martini-Henry and its impact on the battlefield, from the Anglo-Zulu War to the opening months of World War I.

Across Africa in the post-1956 era, the aspirations of African nationalists to secure power were boosted and quickly realized by the British, French and Belgian hasty retreat from empire. The Portuguese, Southern Rhodesian and South African governments, however, stood firm and would be challenged by their African nationalists. Influenced by the Communist bloc, these nationalists adopted the ‘Armed Struggle’. In the case of Rhodesia, the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU),led by Joshua Nkomo, took this step in 1962 after their effort to foment rebellion in Rhodesia’s urban areas in 1961-62 had been frustrated by police action and stiffened security legislation. Rhodesia’s small, undermanned security forces, however, remained wary as Zambia and Tanganyika had given sanctuary to communist- supplied ZAPU and Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) guerrillas. The Rhodesians had foreseen that the northeastern frontier with Mozambique would be the most vulnerable to incursions because the African population living along it offered an immediate target for succour and subversion. The Portuguese were not seen as a bulwark as they were clearly making little progress in their counter-insurgency effort against their FRELIMO nationalist opponents. The Rhodesians were fortunate, however, that ZAPU and ZANU chose to probe across the Zambezi River from Zambia into the harsh, sparsely populated bush of the Zambezi Valley. The consequence was that the Rhodesian security forces conducted a number of successful operations in the period 1966-1972 which dented insurgent ambitions. This book describes and examines the first phase of the ‘bush war’ during which the Rhodesian forces honed their individual and joint skills, emerging as a formidable albeit lean fighting force.

Description:

More than a scream, a fire: Revolution! A few lines taking us to a journey where words, as soft weapons, stand and call. With a dynamic and committed pen, Jean-Pierre Noël BATOUM turns a scream into a song of hope. It’s the desire of a heart that breaks the silence, the breath that longs for a future with more justice, the voice of a people that needs to believe in a brighter tomorrow. Yet this is also an intimate, spiritual and universal revolution. As a prayer this long poem is a call to listen, feel and grow together…

Summary

Fear is the primary reason we fail to share the gospel with our friends, family, and coworkers. We’re afraid of looking weird or out of touch. We’re afraid we won’t have the right answers to their questions. We’re afraid that if they reject the gospel, they’re really rejecting us. We don’t want to make things awkward or strain our relationships. So we say nothing because our discomfort feels bigger than our loved ones’ ultimate destination if they remain outside of the body of Christ. We know it’s not, but it’s just so hard to get over our fear.

Apologist Ray Comfort can help. In Anyone but Me, he shows you how to overcome your fears by developing 10 critical, biblical characteristics so that you can confidently share the message of salvation with those you care about most. If you’ve been longing to see a dear friend, family member, or coworker come to Christ, now is the time to begin becoming the faithful witness they need. Because we never know how much more time we will have to proclaim God’s good news.

Description:

Although few American presidents enjoyed greater affection during their lifetime than James A. Garfield, it is probable that comparatively few Americans know much more about him today than that he was assassinated while in office. For those interested in learning more, both about the man and the stirring times in which he lived, this book offers a golden opportunity. One of its more interesting features is its account of Garfield’s relations with a number of outstanding people probably better known to most Americans than Garfield himself. Among these are the poet William Cullen Bryant, lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson, novelist Lew Wallace, educator Mark Hopkins, General William Rosecrans, Presidents Lincoln, Grant, and Hayes, and the foundress of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton.

The life-story of Garfield is in the Horatio Alger tradition; he was born in a log cabin; he was an ambitious and diligent worker; he attained wealth and high position. He acquired a rather good education despite many handicaps, including the death of his father when James was only two years old, and the lack of opportunity for formal education until he was seventeen. This he began at Keauga Academy (Chester, Ohio) which at the time "boasted a faculty of six, a student body of more than a hundred, and a library of 150 volumes."

In his twenties, Garfield spent two years at Williams College (New York) then under the presidency of Mark Hopkins, to whom "the great aim of education was to help the student perceive religious truth." The following entry in Garfield’s diary testifies to the great influence of Hopkins upon him: "There is a mine opened in the College Chapel twice a day and the treasures are President Hopkins’ mind and heart." Also, the Hopkins’ "legend" owes much to Garfield’s oft-quoted remark that "the ideal college is Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and a student on the other."

The Hopkins influence increased Garfield’s already considerable interest in religion and in public speaking; and it was partly because of his skill on the platform that he was invited, in 1859, to run for the Ohio senate, and, four years later for the U.S. House of Representatives. After serving ably in both, he was elected in 1880 to succeed Rutherford B. Hayes as president; but before he had completed four months in office, he was fatally shot by a demented office-seeker, one Charles Guiteau. "…not even the death of Lincoln brought about a greater outpouring of grief than that of Garfield," says Taylor.

Taylor’s biography presents Garfield as neither demigod nor machine politician, but as "a very human person with an unusual assortment of strengths and weaknesses." He is portrayed as honest, independent of judgment, greatly interested in education and in the general welfare, but also as inconsistent and sometimes lacking in decisiveness.

The book is based on a wealth of primary source materials and contains over 300 references. One appendix is an article, "A Century of Congress," written by Garfield for the Atlantic magazine in 1877; the other is Garfield’s Inaugural Address. Distilled from the review by Brother Berchmans Downey, S.C., Best Sellers, October 1, 1970.

Title: Creation and the Cross: The Mercy of God for a Planet in Peril
Author: Elizabeth A. Johnson
Language: angielski
Year: 2018
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Orbis Books
ISBN: 9781626982666

Description:

In this fresh creative approach to theology, Elizabeth Johnson asks how we can understand cosmic redemption in a time of advancing ecological devastation. In effect, how can we extend the core Christian belief in salvation to include all created beings? Immediately this question runs into a formidable the idea that Jesus’s death on the cross was required as atonement for human sin―a theology laid out by the eleventh-century theologian St. Anselm. Constructing her argument (like Anselm) in the form of a dialogue, Johnson lays out the foundations in scripture, the teachings of Jesus, and the early Church for an understanding that emphasizes the love and mercy of God, showing how this approach can help us respond to a planet in peril.

Language: polski
Year: 2015
Subjects: N/A
Publisher: Wydawnictwo: Wydawnictwo Benedyktynów TYNIEC

Description:

W pierwszych wiekach chrześcijaństwa inicjacja do „nowej drogi” wiary stanowiła doniosły krok w życiu zarówno jednostki, rodziny jak i całej społeczności.
