The main objective of this monograph is to determine on the basis of the survey the role of controllers in contemporary Polish companies. The study confirmed that same of the tasks performed by contemporary controllers in Polish companies are the same as those performed by their counterparts around the world although same differences were also identified. Comparing the current role of controllers in Polish organizations with their role in foreign companies can contribute to improving the controller’s image in the organizations, and change the attitude of other employees to management accountants. This may lead to better cooperation between individual departments and controllers, and therefore to the mare efficient functioning of the company.

Description:

Where everything is black and white and nothing is – a haunting true story of death and a search for justice in a remote outback community

Just hours after his grandfather’s funeral in the remote Northern Territory community of Yuendumu, nineteen-year-old Warlpiri man Kumanjayi Walker was dead. He’d been shot three times by police constable Zachary Rolfe during an attempted arrest, after Walker had stabbed the officer in the shoulder with a pair of surgical scissors.
Three days later, Rolfe was charged with murder, the first time a police officer had been charged for killing a First Nations person in the Northern Territory in 130 years. Following Rolfe’s acquittal, a coronial inquest was called, where Rolfe made sensational allegations about institutional racism within the police force.
In Death in Yuendumu, the ABC journalist who broke the story gives a clear-eyed account of the failed systems that led to this tragedy. Steven Schubert recounts the tragic and disturbing tale of a young Indigenous man with a difficult past and uncertain future; an ex-military policeman who became mired in allegations of misconduct; a family in mourning; and a community fighting for justice.
Death in Yuendumu is powerful, haunting, riveting and unforgettable – it describes a world in which everything is black and white, and yet nothing is.

Can you really die from laughing too hard? Between 1870 and 1920, hundreds of women suffered such a fate-or so a slew of sensationalist obituaries would have us believe. How could laughter be fatal, and what do these reports of women’s risible deaths tell us about the politics of female joy?
Maggie Hennefeld reveals the forgotten histories of "hysterical laughter," exploring how women’s amusement has been theorized and demonized, suppressed and exploited. In nineteenth-century medicine and culture, hysteria was an ailment that afflicted unruly women on the cusp of emotional or nervous breakdown. Cinema, Hennefeld argues, made it possible for women to laugh outrageously as never before, with irreversible social and political consequences. As female enjoyment became a surefire promise of profitability, alarmist tales of women laughing themselves to death epitomized the tension between subversive pleasure and its violent repression.
Hennefeld traces the social politics of women’s laughter from the heyday of nineteenth-century sentimentalism to the collective euphoria of early film spectatorship, traversing contagious dancing outbreaks, hysteria photography, madwomen’s cackling, cinematic close-ups, and screenings of slapstick movies in mental asylums. Placing little-known silent films and an archive of remarkable, often unusual texts in conversation with affect theory, comedy studies, and feminist film theory, this book makes a timely case for the power of hysterical laughter to change the world.

Description:

Work in clinical and laboratory settings has indicated that lack of bright light during the day can compromise mood, accelerate cancer growth, and impair cognition. Even sustained exposure to the equivalent of a child’s night light has been shown to have an impact on everything from how well our brains function every day to how well our bodies recover from injury. Professor Randy J. Nelson brings together the most reliable research on the different ways exposure to light at night affects how our bodies function and, ultimately, our health. Each chapter explores the role of light and dark in our bodies’ most important regulatory processes. In humans, virtually every aspect of our physiology and behavior is mediated by our internal biological clocks. One feature of modern life that may have negative consequences for our health is exposure to light levels that are not aligned with the 24-hour solar day. Circadian rhythms, the internal biological rhythms of our body’s processes, require short wavelength (blue) light early during the day to optimize their temporal regulation. Experiencing light at night or insufficient light during the day can lead to a host of problems such as obesity, major depression, bipolar depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, sleep disorders, cancer, heart disease and more. Dark Matters sets out to shine a light on the health and well-being consequences of poor circadian hygiene and provide strategies to offset the negative health effects of disrupted circadian rhythms.

With so little information, many women feel unprepared, ashamed, and deeply alone when the time comes.

Description:

Prue Shaw’s absorbing, highly accessible introduction to the Commedia promises to be the essential edition for years to come.
The Commedia, Dante’s epic story of one man’s journey from the darkness and terror of hell to the revelation of divine light in heaven, is one of the greatest works of Western literature, but it can seem daunting to the English-speaking reader. College courses often cherry-pick the most arresting passages from Inferno and barely glance at the equally compelling Purgatorio and Paradiso.

In The Essential "Commedia," Prue Shaw, a renowned Dante scholar, expertly guides the reader on an enthralling tour through all three realms of the afterlife. Extensive passages of the work’s greatest poetry-about one third of the whole-are astutely excerpted and presented in English translation alongside the original Italian. A linking commentary summarizes the elided sections, distilling the epic into a series of vivid…
