Description:

"Learned, lively and often irreverent, David McWilliams’s The History of Money is rich with surprising details about currency, then and now."
The New York Times

In this fresh, eye-opening global history, economist David McWilliams charts the relationship between humans and money-from clay tablets in Mesopotamia to cryptocurrency in Silicon Valley.

The story of humanity is inextricable from that of money. No innovation has defined our own evolution so thoroughly and changed the direction of our planet’s history so dramatically. And yet despite money’s primacy, most of us don’t truly understand it.

As leading economist David McWilliams shows, money is central to every aspect of our civilization, from the political to the artistic. “Money defines the relationship between worker and employer, buyer and seller, merchant and producer. But not only that: it also defines the bond between the governed and the governor, the state and the citizen. Money unlocks pleasure, puts a price on desire, art and creativity. It motivates us to strive, achieve, invent and take risks. Money also brings out humanity’s darker side, invoking greed, envy, hatred, violence and, of course, colonialism.”

In The History of Money, McWilliams takes us across the world, from the birthplace of money in ancient Babylon to the beginning of trade along the Silk Road, from Marrakech markets to Wall Street. Along the way, we meet a host of innovators, emperors, frauds, and speculators, who have disrupted society and transformed the way we live. Filled with memorable anecdotes, and with a foreword by Michael Lewis, The History of Money is an essential, extremely readable history of humanity’s most consequential invention.

Description:

"[A] fascinating narrative. . . . This is a nuanced, intelligently framed chronicle . . . In a word: enlightening." -George Szpiro, Nature
While all of us regularly use basic math symbols such as those for plus, minus, and equals, few of us know that many of these symbols weren’t available before the sixteenth century. What did mathematicians rely on for their work before then? And how did mathematical notations evolve into what we know today?
In Enlightening Symbols, popular math writer Joseph Mazur explains the fascinating history behind the development of our mathematical notation system.
Traversing mathematical history and the foundations of numerals in different cultures, Mazur looks at how historians have disagreed over the origins of the numerical system for the past two centuries. He follows the transfigurations of algebra from a rhetorical style to a symbolic one, demonstrating that most algebra before the sixteenth century was written in prose or in verse employing the written names of numerals. Mazur also investigates the subconscious and psychological effects that mathematical symbols have had on mathematical thought, moods, meaning, communication, and comprehension. He considers how these symbols influence us, how they lead to new ideas by subconscious associations, how they make connections between experience and the unknown, and how they contribute to the communication of basic mathematics
From words to abbreviations to symbols, this entertaining history shows how math evolved to the familiar forms we use today.
"An enjoyable read." –Science
"If you enjoy reading about history, languages and science, then you’ll enjoy this book. . . . you don’t have to be a mathematician to enjoy this informative book." –Guardian.com’s, GrrlScientist
"Fascinating." –Publishers Weekly

Description:

Richly illustrated, this textbook lays the foundation for a dedicated discipline of feline veterinary psychiatry. Drawing on recent advances in neuroscience, ethology, psychology, and psychiatry, it also integrates the clinical expertise of its contributors. Building on the groundwork established in the authors’ first volume on canine veterinary psychiatry, this book expands the scope to address the unique behavioral complexities of cats.
Today, cats are the most common companion animals in households, outnumbering dogs. This rise has been accompanied by significant growth in feline medicine, including the emergence of research groups focused exclusively on feline health and veterinary clinics specializing in cat care.
As animals with a dual status – both prey and predator – and a naturally solitary disposition, cats often exhibit behaviors that may appear puzzling or inappropriate. Behavioral disorders have become a major concern in veterinary medicine, representing a source of animal distress and a critical threat to the human-animal bond.
Adopting a distinct medical perspective, this work offers a functional interpretation of feline behavior and presents concrete, practical solutions for everyday clinical practice. It consistently prioritizes the well-being of both the animal and its human companions. Comprehensive yet accessible, this reference opens a previously underexplored field to a wide audience. It is an essential resource for veterinary students delving into the discipline, practicing veterinarians seeking a reliable guide, future specialists aiming to deepen their expertise, as well as all cat owners and feline behaviorists looking for practical and insightful information.

Description:

This monograph presents an integral method for analysing the dynamic behaviour of nonlinear, non-stationary, and controlled systems. The method is based on the use of nonlinear integral inequalities to obtain new estimates for the norms of solutions and Lyapunov functions for the corresponding systems of differential equations of disturbed motion. The book consists of seven chapters. The first chapter establishes new bounds for solutions to ordinary and infinite systems of differential equations using nonlinear integral inequalities in pseudo-linear form. The second chapter studies the equations of disturbed motion based on new estimates of Lyapunov functions. Here, conditions are established for various types of motion boundedness, including the stability of coupled systems under initial and subsequent disturbances. The third chapter is devoted to polynomial systems, where variations of Lyapunov functions are used to derive conditions for stability and stabilisation of motion, including the analysis of the zero solution of systems with aftereffects.Chapter 4 applies nonlinear integral inequalities to nonlinear systems with interval initial conditions, and studies the stabilisation of systems with multiple controls. Chapter 5 focuses on quasilinear systems with fractional derivatives, establishing conditions for boundedness and Lagrange stability. Chapter 6 introduces an integral method for time-scale dynamic equations with fractional derivatives, offering new tools for stability and boundedness analysis. The final chapter studies equilibrium stability in a model of confrontation between two countries and alliances, using Lyapunov functions and integral inequalities to determine conditions for stable equilibrium and changes in weapon levels.
