W 1944 roku dowództwo amerykańskie zaplanowało operację zajęcia archipelagu Marianów w południowo-zachodniej części Pacyfiku. Wyspy te stanowiły ważne ogniwo w systemie obronnym Japonii, a ich opanowanie pozwoliłoby na uzyskanie baz lotniczych i dogodnych punktów wypadowych, m.in. do inwazji na Filipiny okupowane przez Japończyków. Najważniejszą z nich był Saipan, który stał się celem uderzenia amerykańskich Północnych Wojsk i Sił Desantowych (V Korpusu Amfibijnego) złożonych z 2. i 4. Dywizji Piechoty Morskiej oraz 27. Dywizji Piechoty. Wspierały je liczne okręty i samoloty. Desant na Saipanie nastąpił 15 czerwca, po czterodniowym ostrzale z morza i nalotach. Japończycy bronili się zażarcie, organizując desperackie kontrataki piechoty i czołgów, tzw. szarże banzai. Kryli się w bunkrach i tunelach, które zdobywano także za pomocą miotaczy ognia. Krwawe walki trwały aż do 9 lipca. Z japońskiego garnizonu liczącego ponad 31 000 żołnierzy ogromna większość obrońców zginęła, duże straty, choć procentowo znacznie mniejsze, ponieśli też Amerykanie.
