Description:

This ambitious and ground-breaking publication accompanies an exhibition of selected early `pictures of the floating world’ (Ukiyo-e) from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Most of these exceptional paintings, prints and books have never before been shown outside Boston. Written by leading scholars and illustrated throughout in colour, the essays and detailed commentaries in this volume examine the images as vivid records of the leisure pursuits of the townsman class emerging within Japanese feudal society at the time. They discuss the origins, style and technique of early Ukiyo-e and describe the history of the Boston collection, `the finest collection of Asian art under one roof in the world’. Biographies of the artists, a chronology, a glossary and an extensive bibliography add to the value of this account as a standard work of reference.

Description:

This book presents an important new account of Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s Closed Commercial State, a major early nineteenth-century development of Rousseau and Kant’s political thought. Isaac Nakhimovsky shows how Fichte reformulated Rousseau’s constitutional politics and radicalized the economic implications of Kant’s social contract theory with his defense of the right to work. Nakhimovsky argues that Fichte’s sequel to Rousseau and Kant’s writings on perpetual peace represents a pivotal moment in the intellectual history of the pacification of the West. Fichte claimed that Europe could not transform itself into a peaceful federation of constitutional republics unless economic life could be disentangled from the competitive dynamics of relations between states, and he asserted that this disentanglement required transitioning to a planned and largely self-sufficient national economy, made possible by a radical monetary policy. Fichte’s ideas have resurfaced with nearly every crisis of globalization from the Napoleonic wars to the present, and his book remains a uniquely systematic and complete discussion of what John Maynard Keynes later termed "national self-sufficiency." Fichte’s provocative contribution to the social contract tradition reminds us, Nakhimovsky concludes, that the combination of a liberal theory of the state with an open economy and international system is a much more contingent and precarious outcome than many recent theorists have tended to assume.

Description:

The Editor in Chief of The Economist illuminates what global issues mattered in the last century-and how the ways in which we deal with them will shape our lives in the next
The attacks on September 11th, 2001, shook the rich West out of its complacency; suddenly, peace looked to be in peril. Even before that time prosperity was endangered, as campaigns mounted against the purported evils of capitalist globalization, such as inequality, pollution, and financial instability, and as America’s high-tech stockmarket boom turned to bust. Yet, in the decade following the end of the Cold War, prospects had looked so rosy, with peace prevailing among the world’s great powers, with billions of people joining the world market economy, and with great waves of technological change driving economies forwards.
What to make of such confusion and disappointment? What will the 21st century be like now? Bill Emmott, editor of the world’s leading current affairs weekly, The Economist, argues that the best way to think about the future is to look back at the past, at the forces that have shaped our world and at what they tell us about the things that really matter in determining whether we are at peace or at war, in a state of liberty or repression, in a period of prosperity or of depression. From the twentieth century we can learn that two questions matter above all others: Will America continue to lead the world and to protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism, with all its strengths and weaknesses, or will it be challenged once again? Bill Emmott’s 20:21 Vision provides the answers that matter for all our lives in the twenty-first century.

Description:

In light of the dwindling honey bee population, this century-old guide is more relevant than ever. Written by the scion of a celebrated family of beekeepers that continues to operate today, the richly illustrated volume is the perfect companion for beginning beekeepers as well as those with a casual interest in bees. Reader-friendly information ranges from background on bee anatomy and the social structure of bee communities to different types of hives and how they function, honey production, wintertime beekeeping, and other practical matters. Author Camille Pierre Dadant was the son of Charles Dadant, one of the fathers of modern beekeeping techniques, inventor of the Dadant beehive, and founder of one of the first beekeeping equipment manufacturers. The business is still extant and run by the family, as is their publication, American Bee Journal. The old-fashioned charm of Dadant’s narrative rests upon a solid foundation of timeless scientific knowledge, complemented by many informative drawings and photographs.
