Description:

Something in Doreen’s last case sends Chester and Darren out with shovels to a location she’d never seen before. When she finds out why, she’s all in-particularly when they find a body. She hates to be delighted with a new case, as that always sounds macabre, … but it’s a new case, and that’s always exciting to her.

Yet nothing is ever simple when Doreen gets into the mix. As she slowly unravels this new mystery, the case bends and twists in several different directions, with more deaths adding to the mess. She even gets blamed once or twice for causing extra work.

By the time she’s thoroughly embedded herself into this cold case and Mack’s related current case, the puzzle is as confusing as any case she’s ever solved. And no happy conclusion is in sight …

Description:

This book presents reviews of various aspects of radiation/matter interactions, be these instrumental developments, the application of the study of the interaction of X-rays and materials to a particular scientific field, or specific methodological approaches.

The overall aim of the book is to provide reference summaries for a range of specific subject areas within a pedagogical framework. Each chapter is written by an author who is well known within their field and who has delivered an invited lecture on their subject area as part of the "RX2009 – X-rays and Materials" colloquium that took place in December 2009 at Orsay in France.

The book consists of five chapters on the subject of X-ray diffraction, scattering and absorption.

Chapter 1 gives a detailed presentation of the capabilities and potential of beam lines dedicated to condensed matter studies at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source.
Chapter 2 focuses on the study of nanoparticles using small-angle X-ray scattering.
Chapter 3 discusses the quantitative studies of this scattering signal used to analyze these characteristics in detail.
Chapter 4 discusses relaxor materials, which are ceramics with a particularly complex microstructure. Chapter 5 discusses an approach enabling the in situ analysis of these phase transitions and their associated microstructural changes.

Description:

This book provides the first unified examination of the relationship between Radon transforms on symmetric spaces of compact type and the infinitesimal versions of two fundamental rigidity problems in Riemannian geometry. Its primary focus is the spectral rigidity problem: Can the metric of a given Riemannian symmetric space of compact type be characterized by means of the spectrum of its Laplacian? It also addresses a question rooted in the Blaschke problem: Is a Riemannian metric on a projective space whose geodesics are all closed and of the same length isometric to the canonical metric?
The authors comprehensively treat the results concerning Radon transforms and the infinitesimal versions of these two problems. Their main result implies that most Grassmannians are spectrally rigid to the first order. This is particularly important, for there are still few isospectrality results for positively curved spaces and these are the first such results for symmetric spaces of compact type of rank >1. The authors exploit the theory of overdetermined partial differential equations and harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces to provide criteria for infinitesimal rigidity that apply to a large class of spaces.
A substantial amount of basic material about Riemannian geometry, symmetric spaces, and Radon transforms is included in a clear and elegant presentation that will be useful to researchers and advanced students in differential geometry.

Description:

Cynthia Ozick is one of America’s literary treasures. For her sixth novel, she set herself a brilliant challenge: to retell the story of Henry James’s The Ambassadors-the work he considered his best-but as a photographic negative, that is the plot is the same, the meaning is reversed. At the core of the story is Bea Nightingale, a fiftyish divorced schoolteacher whose life has been on hold during the many years since her brief marriage. When her estranged, difficult brother asks her to leave New York for Paris to retrieve a nephew she barely knows, she becomes entangled in the lives of her brother’s family and even, after so long, her ex-husband. Every one of them is irrevocably changed by the events of just a few months in that fateful year.

Traveling from New York to Paris to Hollywood, aiding and abetting her nephew and niece while waging a war of letters with her brother, facing her ex-husband and finally shaking off his lingering sneers from decades past, Bea Nightingale is a newly liberated divorcee who inadvertently wreaks havoc on the very people she tries to help.

Foreign Bodies may be Cynthia Ozick’s greatest and most virtuosic novel of all, as it transforms Henry James’s prototype into a brilliant, utterly original, new American classic.

Description:

The use of small animal models in basic and preclinical sciences constitutes an integral part of testing new pharmaceutical agents prior to their application in clinical practice. New imaging and therapeutic approaches need to be tested and validated first in animals before application to humans.
Handbook of Small Animal Imaging: Preclinical Imaging, Therapy, and Applications collects the latest information about various imaging and therapeutic technologies used in preclinical research into a single source. Useful to established researchers as well as newcomers to the field, this handbook shows readers how to exploit and integrate these imaging and treatment modalities and techniques into their own research.
The book first presents introductory material on small animal imaging, therapy, and research ethics. It next covers ionizing radiation and nonionizing radiation methods in small animal imaging, hybrid imaging, and imaging agents. The book then addresses therapeutic research platforms and image quantification, explaining how to ensure accurate measurements of high-quality data. It concludes with an overview of many small animal imaging and therapy applications that demonstrate the strength of the techniques in biomedical fields.

Description:

The academic agenda for studying social media and politics has been somewhat haphazard. Thanks to rapid technological change, a cascade of policy-relevant crises, and sheer scale, we do not have a coherent framework for deciding what questions to ask. This Element articulates such a framework by taking existing literature from media economics and sociology and applying it reflexively, to both the academic agenda and to the specific case of politics on YouTube: the Supply and Demand Framework. The key mechanism, traced over the past century, is the technology of audience measurement. The YouTube audience comes pre rationalized in the form of Likes, Views and Comments, and is thus unavoidable for all actors involved. The phenomenon of ‘radicalization’ is best understood as a consequence of accelerated feedback between audiences and creators, radicalizing each other. I use fifteen years of supply and demand data from YouTube to demonstrate how different types of producers respond more or less to this feedback, which in turn structures the ideological distribution of content consumed on the platform.

Description:

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has become a standard practice technique, and automated XPS facilities can be found in industry and in universities all over the world. This transformed XPS from an advanced characterization method for dedicated research, to a rather standard analysis technique of surface analysis. The catalyst’s surface state is probably the most prominent factor that influences the catalytic performance. It is therefore no surprise that XPS has become an indispensable tool in studies of solid catalysts. It has been directly used to investigate issues such as the surface composition of the active catalyst and reaction and deactivation mechanisms.
The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current status and future perspectives of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy dedicated to catalytic applications, including thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photo(electro)catalysis. The book contains 13 chapters, starting with the necessary introduction of the technique background, including basic phenomena and instrumentation aspects. The second part of the book focuses on the presentation of long-established applications of the technique, such as XPS studies of model catalysts. Finally, the book describes relatively recent developments of this method for cutting-edge surface characterization mainly using synchrotron X-ray radiation.
Contents:

  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy in Catalysis: Impact and Historical Background (Spyridon Zafeiratos)
  • Practical Aspects of XPS: From Sample Preparation to Spectra Interpretation (Dmitry Y Zemlyanov)
  • Introduction to Chemical State Analysis by XPS with Examples (George H Major, Neal Fairley, Vincent Fernandez and Matthew R Linford)
  • The Practical Dos and Don’ts of Using XPS to Qualify and Quantify Powder Catalysts (Saulius Kaciulis)
  • XPS Analysis of Electrically Insulating Catalytic Materials (David J Morgan)
  • Assigning XPS Peaks to Chemical Environments Using First-Principles Calculations (Gabriel L S Rodrigues, Mikael Valter, Peter Amann and Lars G M Pettersson)
  • Application of XPS in Studies of Model Catalysts: From Single Crystals to Supported Nanoparticles (Günther Rupprechter)
  • Application of Photoelectron Spectroscopy to Align the Energy Levels of Photocatalysts (Andreas Klein)
  • Time-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy for Understanding of the Photocatalytic Phenomenon (Kenichi Ozawa)
  • Catalysts at Work by Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Emilia A Carbonio and Detre Teschner)
  • Scanning and Full-Field Imaging Photoelectron Microscopy Studies Relevant to Heterogeneous Catalysis (Luca Gregoratti, Andrea Locatelli and Maya Kiskinova)
  • Applying XPS to Study Solid/Liquid Interfaces (Pinar Aydogan Gokturk, Yifan Ye and Ethan J Crumlin)
  • NAP-XPS Studies of Mixed Conducting Electrodes During High-Temperature Electrochemical Reactions (David N Mueller)

Readership: The primary market of the book are researchers and graduate students, working in the field of catalysis and materials science. Also of use to catalysis industry professionals who are looking for a concrete and simplified resource dedicated to the recent advances of the technique in their field.
Key Features:

  • This book is the first that is entirely dedicated to the applications of XPS in catalysis research. An important feature of this book is that contains chapters dedicated to in situ/operando studies in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis based on recent technological advancements, which is a relatively novel field of XPS application
  • The book contains also classical applications of XPS in heterogeneous catalyst studies, like for example studies of model catalysts
  • Another unique feature of this book is the description of the practical aspects of the method. Although this topic has been already part of several books related to XPS, the originality here is that the book is addressed primarily to catalytic studies, and it is written by XPS experts with background in catalysis
  • This book provides the essential information, without complicating the reader with elaborate theoretical and experimental details which are not directly relevant for catalytic oriented studies
