Description:

This textbook is a step-by-step, at the bench, real-world approach to grossing a wide variety of surgical cases. Each figure is produced directly from the bench during the grossing process with the associated dictation. These specimens contain the imperfections of real-life cases with ample illustrations drawn by renown medical illustrationist Kyle Cunningham. This book is not a bullet-point list of what to do but rather a step-by-step, illustrated approach to grossing each specimen. This manual can be utilized at the bench with any specimen at any time. Key features include step-by-step photographic documentation of optimal methods for handling gross specimens commonly seen in the pathology laboratory, medical illustrations that highlight key anatomic features, and tips and tricks to produce optimal diagnostic sections for pathologic diagnosis. Each chapter also includes multiple choice questions to help apply the knowledge and skills learned in the readings.
This text is not just a reference manual. It is a deliberative teaching manual meant to be taken into the lab and used at the bench providing consultative support. The text is specifically focused on pathology residents learning grossing skills when no one is around to answer questions.
Currently, there are four main surgical grossing texts on the market. Those texts contain drawings and characterizations of the perfect organ and a list of sections needed for each specimen. These books do not focus on the methodology for taking the most appropriate sections with a focus on handling imperfect specimens. Manual of Pathologic Grossing is the only text that includes photographs of each step in the grossing process. The photos are accompanied by a step-by-step text of demonstrating how and why each section was taken.

Description:

This book is derived from a series of articles written for dental practitioners and first published in Dental Update. The articles were written as a consequence of running a weekly clinic, concerned largely with the correction of referred endodontic problems. In most cases the ‘problems’ did not exist and were treated simply by redoing the root filling or by undertaking a straightforward apicectomy. Regrettably, in many other cases, the problem would not have existed had the previously undertaken, and potentially simple, apicectomy been carried out competently. There is no good reason why apical surgery should not be undertaken by the general dental practitioner as part of the patient’s overall treatment. After all, the problem will usually have arisen either during, or as a result of, routine dental treatment. In addition, the tooth may require to be restored, either at the time of surgery or fairly soon thereafter. Regrettably, inexperience in the handling of soft tissues, and concern about the risk of damage to associated structures, often deters the dentist from attempting what is, if sensibly approached, an uncomplicated minor dento-alveolar operation. Chapters 1-8 introduce the reader to the basic techniques of apicectomy. Chapters 9, 12, 16 and 17 will, it is hoped, help the interested dentist to develop a competence to treat more complex cases, once he or she has become proficient in the basic skills.

difficult, to represent it as the surgeon sees it, and to understand the anat omy, which is not always visible. In part, this was accomplished by paint ing on both surfaces of transparent paper to create the illusion of looking through superficial layers to the deeper structures. A combination of color media, including colored pencil, graphite, carbon, pastels, and transparent and opaque watercolors, enabled me to convey the field with minimal loss of reality or dimension. Of equal importance was the availability, for every illustration, of direct surgical observation, surgical photographs, fresh specimens, and the surgical instruments. The sequence of creation was first the discus sion of desired illustrations, then a rough sketch, consultation with the surgeons, finished pencil drawing, another consultation, and finally the color rendering. These color renderings were then checked against actual surgery for accuracy in representation of tissues, instrumentation, tissue responses to manipulation, and consistency of representation. From these processes evolved a technique that facilitated the flow of information, in logical sequence, from one step to the next and from one procedure to another, always focusing the attention of the audience toward what is pertinent and away from the extraneous.

Description:

Ten właśnie aspekt duchowości Newmana wyakcentował w swojej pierwszej encyklice – zresztą bez wątpienia inspirowany ideami wielkiego poprzednika i wybitnego teologa Benedykta XVI – papież Franciszek, pisząc, że rozumiane w ten sposób życie wewnętrzne człowieka – z jednej strony współczesne, z drugiej zaś wieczne – prowadzi do przeżywania wiary w sposób integralny, dojrzały.

Teologia życia duchowego autorstwa Newmana w centrum stawia osobę Chrystusa. John Henry, m.in. z racji przynależności do Kościoła anglikańskiego w pierwszej połowie swojego życia, był w myśleniu, pisarstwie i osobistej modlitwie zdecydowanie chrystocentryczny. Z przyjęcia właśnie takiej perspektywy wypływa jakże fascynująca, zdrowa i przemyślana doktryna mistyczna, którą chciałbym przedstawić w niniejszej książce. Skoncentrowanie duszy i jej wewnętrznych działań na osobie Chrystusa, postawienie Go w centrum każdego poruszenia duchowego, nadaje ścieżkom pobożności właściwy charakter i niezawodnie prowadzi do zbawienia. Dlatego Ewangelie o męce prowadzą raczej do kontemplacji wiary niż do wysiłku emocjonalnego.
