Why do you need to take a ROS2 course now?
ROS1 has emerged since 2009 and has been evolving as the de facto standard Ecosystem for developing all kinds of robotics applications, including mobile robots, robotics arms, unmanned aerial systems and drones, self-driving cars, and much more. At ROSCon 2014 conference, the Open Source Robotics Foundations (OSRF) and the ROS community started to discuss and identify some gaps in ROS1, including (1) a single point of failure with the ROS Master Node, (2) nonsupport of multi-robots systems as ROS1 was designed for a single robot usage, (3) and no support of real-time guarantee or quality of service profiles, and thus its reliability was questionable.
The ROS community has formed several working groups to design and develop the next-generation version of ROS1, which is currently ROS2. Alpha and Beta versions started to show up from August 2015 until September 2017, and the first official ROS2 release, known as Ardent Apalone, was launched. On December 8th, 2017. Despite the release of ROS2, ROS1 was still being used more actively than ROS2 until 2022, and the main reason is that ROS2 has been under continuous development and did not reach the same level of maturity as ROS1. In fact, the ROS2 developers created the ROS1 Bridge package to be able to communicate between ROS1 and ROS2 when ROS1 is needed from missing functionalities in ROS2.
However, things have changed since 2021, when ROS2 has accomplished most of the missing functionalities, including navigation, transformations, and others. It is expected that ROS2 will completely dominate or at least start to dominate ROS1 in 2023. For this reason, learning about ROS2, even if you are an experienced ROS1 developer, is becoming more and more in need to cope with the future changes and transition from ROS1 and ROS2. As a matter of fact, the latest ROS1 version, ROS Noetic, released in May 2020, has an end of life in May 2025, while ROS2 will continue developing.
I provide this course to all ROS users with prior knowledge on ROS1 or even those entirely new to the ROS ecosystem to present the features of ROS2 and how it differs and compares with ROS1.

Overview
Localization, mapping, and navigation are fundamental topics in the Robot Operating System (ROS) and mobile robots. However, it is very complex to learn. Usually, beginners find it difficult to even know where to start. The typical tutorials in ROS give high-level information about how to run ROS nodes to performs mapping and navigation, but they do not give any details about the technical aspects. Some other courses focus more on the technical aspects, which is mathematically complex but does not give a clear link to how these concepts are tied with the ROS navigation stack.
This course addresses this gap and follows a practical approach to introduce new learners to mobile robot navigation foundations and how it is implemented in ROS. The course is designed to introduce you to the world of mobile robot navigation in a quick and effective manner.
In this course, I presented detailed coverage of the most important package in ROS for navigation: the tf package! Without understanding this package, it will be difficult to deeply understand how navigation works in ROS. Although there are tf tutorials, the tf package heavily relies on important theoretical concepts not presented in ROS tutorials. This course provides a systematic introduction to the necessary theoretical background and complement with demonstration and programming activities of the tf package utilities and API.
This course assumes that you have some background on the main concepts of Robot Operating System (ROS), such as ROS nodes, ROS topics, ROS services, and an understanding of the basic notion of motion with ROS. If you do not have these skills, I would recommend first enroll in my course ROS for Beginners: Basics, Motion, and OpenCV to get the necessary background.
My experience with ROS
I have been programming with ROS for many years both in academic and industrial projects. I am very passionate to develop programs with ROS. I have also been teaching ROS at the University and providing training programs. I am the R&D Director of Gaitech Robotics, and I have developed many ROS packages for robots and drones. I have been leading international scientific activities around ROS, and in particular, I am the editor of five volumes of books with Springer entitled Robot Operating System, The Complete Reference. I gained a lot of experience in what difficulties new users encounter to learn ROS and this contributed to pin right to the point addressing these problems through the different lectures of the course.

This course presents the fundamentals of a new area of research related to robotics called Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), which is based on the physical, cognitive, and social interaction between humans and robots. The HRI area focuses on understanding, designing, and evaluating the interaction between humans and robots that can communicate and/or share the physical space or workspace. The motivation for using HRI systems for an application where humans and robots can interact and cooperate is to reap the benefits of both worlds. Humans, on the other hand, are excellent at complex manual tasks, have creativity, and excellent problem-solving skills, but tend to get tired or distracted easily. Among the main benefits of collaboration between humans and robots is to increase the productivity or efficiency of a process or a particular task, while reducing the workload of the human, and giving support to it in tasks that require it.
